Wellington's Engineers by Mark S. Thompson Pdf

The role of the Royal Engineers in the Peninsular War has long been neglected and often misunderstood, and Mark Thompson's history is the first full account of their work and of the contribution they made throughout the conflict. He draws on his unrivalled collection of the engineers' letters and diaries in order to tell, in vivid detail, the story of the war as they experienced it. His narrative describes their role in all the major operations between 1808 and 1814, and it demonstrates the extraordinary range of tasks they undertook, from surveys and reconnaissance to the building of roads and bridges, siege works and field fortifications. His deeply researched study will be fascinating reading for anyone who is interested in the history of military engineering and a vital text for readers who are keen to broaden their understanding of the Peninsular War.

Imagining Nuclear War in the British Army, 1945-1989 by Simon J. Moody Pdf

The primary mission assigned to the British Army from the 1950s until the end of the Cold War was deterring Soviet aggression in Europe by demonstrating the will and capability to fight with nuclear weapons in defence of NATO territory. This 'surreal' mission was unlike any other in history, and raised a number of conceptual and practical difficulties. This comprehensive study observes how the British Army imagined nuclear war, and how it planned to fight it. Using new archival sources, Simon J. Moody analyses British thinking about tactical nuclear weapons, the role of the Army within NATO strategy, the development of theories of tactical nuclear warfare, how nuclear war was taught at the Staff College, the role of operational research, and the evolution of the Army's nuclear war-fighting doctrine. He argues that the British Army possessed the intellectual capacity for organisational adaptation, but that it displayed a cognitive dissonance about some of the more uncomfortable realities of nuclear war.

Progress in Aeronautical Sciences by D. Küchemann,L. H. G. Sterne Pdf

Progress in Aeronautical Sciences, Volume 6 reviews advances in aeronautical sciences and considers a wide range of problems related to aerodynamics, including some classical problems of fluid motion and those affecting hypersonic aircraft. Topics covered range from equations of gas flow at low density; nonequilibrium expansion flows of dissociated oxygen and ionized argon around a corner; and the role of spatially growing waves in the theory of hydrodynamic stability. This volume is comprised of five chapters and begins with a discussion on flows of gases where the density of the gas is too low for equations of continuum gas dynamics to be applicable. The kinetic theory of gases is used to derive the equations governing such flows. The second chapter deals with the nature of shock waves in flows of electrically conducting gases subjected to magnetic fields. The third chapter is concerned with the theory of two-dimensional flows of dissociated oxygen or ionized argon expanding around a corner. The fourth chapter goes back to the classical problem of hydrodynamic stability and the possible mechanics underlying the transition from the laminar to a turbulent state of the flow. The last chapter describes a future type of aircraft that can fly at hypersonic speeds. This book will be a useful resource for students and practitioners in the field of aeronautics.

Pendulum Of War by Niall Barr Pdf

In late June 1942, the dispirited and defeated British Eighth Army was pouring back towards the tiny railway halt of El Alamein in the western desert of Egypt. Tobruk had fallen and Eighth Army had suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Rommel's Panzerarmee Afrika. Yet just five months later, the famous bombardment opened the Eighth Army's own offensive which destroyed the Axis threat to Egypt. Explanations for the remarkable change of fortune have generally been sought in the abrasive personality of the new army commander Lieutenant-General Bernard Law Montgomery. But the long running controversies surrounding the commanders of Eighth Army - Generals Auchinleck and Montgomery - and that of their legendary opponent, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, have often been allowed to obscure the true nature of the Alamein campaign. Pendulum of War provides a vivid and fresh perspective on the fighting at El Alamein from the early desperate days of July to the final costly victory in November.

Fields of Battle by P. Doyle,Matthew R. Bennett Pdf

Terrain has a profound effect upon the strategy and tactics of any military engagement and has consequently played an important role in determining history. In addition, the landscapes of battle, and the geology which underlies them, has helped shape the cultural iconography of battle certainly within the 20th century. In the last few years this has become a fertile topic of scientific and historical exploration and has given rise to a number of conferences and books. The current volume stems from the international Terrain in Military History conference held in association with the Imperial War Museum, London and the Royal Engineers Museum, Chatham, at the University of Greenwich in January 2000. This conference brought together historians, geologists, military enthusiasts and terrain analysts from military, academic and amateur backgrounds with the aim of exploring the application of modem tools of landscape visualisation to understanding historical battlefields. This theme was the subject of a Leverhulme Trust grant (F/345/E) awarded to the University of Greenwich and administered by us in 1998, which aimed to use the tools of modem landscape visualisation in understanding the influence of terrain in the First World War. This volume forms part of the output from this grant and is part of our wider exploration of the role of terrain in military history. Many individuals contributed to the organisation of the original conference and to the production of this volume.
