The Sacred Writings of Gregory of Nyssa (Annotated Edition) by Gregory of Nyssa Pdf

"The Sacred Writings Of ..." provides you with the essential works among the Early Christian writings. The volumes cover the beginning of Christianity until before the promulgation of the Nicene Creed at the First Council of Nicaea. This volume is accurately annotated, including * an extensive biography of the author and his life Gregory of Nyssa (c. 335 – c. 395) (also known as Gregory Nyssen) was bishop of Nyssa from 372 to 376, and from 378 until his death. He is venerated as a saint in Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, Lutheranism and Anglicanism. Gregory, his brother Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus are collectively known as the Cappadocian Fathers Gregory lacked the administrative ability of his brother Basil, or the contemporary influence of Gregory of Nazianzus, but was an erudite theologian who made significant contributions to the doctrine of the Trinity and the Nicene creed. Gregory's philosophical writings were influenced by Origen, and he is generally considered to have believed in universal salvation. Since the mid-twentieth century, there has been a significant increase in interest in Gregory's works from the academic community, which has resulted in challenges to many traditional interpretations of his theology. The Sacred Writings of Eusebius Pamphilus (Annotated Edition) by St. Pamphilus Pdf

"The Sacred Writings Of ..." provides you with the essential works among the Early Christian writings. The volumes cover the beginning of Christianity until before the promulgation of the Nicene Creed at the First Council of Nicaea. This volume is accurately annotated, including * an extensive biography of the author and his life This edition comprises the following works: 'The Church History' or 'Ecclesiastical History' - Eusebius and Pamphilus wrote the first surviving history of the Christian Church as a chronologically-ordered account, based on earlier sources complete from the period of the Apostles to their own epoch. This "historical account" has much of Eusebius's own theological agenda intertwined with the factual text including his view on God, Christ, the Scriptures, the Jews, the church, pagans, and heretics. 'The Life of Constantine' (Vita Constantini) is a eulogy or panegyric, and therefore its style and selection of facts are affected by its purpose, rendering it inadequate as a continuation of the Church History. As the historian Socrates Scholasticus said, at the opening of his history that was designed as a continuation of Eusebius, "Also in writing the life of Constantine, this same author has but slightly treated of matters regarding Arius, being more intent on the rhetorical finish of his composition and the praises of the emperor, than on an accurate statement of facts." The work was unfinished at Eusebius' death. Some scholars have questioned the Eusebian authorship of this work. 'Oration in Praise of Constantine', an eulogy.

The Sacred Writings of Peter, Bishop of Alexandria (Annotated Edition) by Peter of Alexandria Pdf

"The Sacred Writings Of ..." provides you with the essential works among the Early Christian writings. The volumes cover the beginning of Christianity until before the promulgation of the Nicene Creed at the First Council of Nicaea. Every single volume is accurately annotated, including * an extensive biography of the author and his life This edition consists of fragments of St. Peters writings as well as a collection of fourteen canons issued by Peter in the third year of the persecution dealing chiefly with the lapsi, excerpted probably from an Easter Festal Epistle. The fact that they were ratified by the Council of Trullo, and thus became part of the canon law of the Eastern Church, probably accounts for their preservation. Many MSS. contain a fifteenth canon taken from writing on the Passover. The cases of different kinds of lapsi were decided upon in these canons.

Saint Athanasius of Alexandria Collection [5 Books] by Saint Athanasius of Alexandria,Aeterna Press Pdf

SAINT ATHANASIUS OF ALEXANDRIA COLLECTION [5 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, also called Athanasius the Great, Athanasius the Confessor or, primarily in the Coptic Orthodox Church, Athanasius the Apostolic, was the twentieth bishop of Alexandria (as Athanasius I). His episcopate lasted 45 years (c. 8 June 328 – 2 May 373), of which over 17 were spent in five exiles ordered by four different Roman emperors. Athanasius is a renowned Christian theologian, a Church Father, the chief defender of Trinitarianism against Arianism, and a noted Egyptian leader of the fourth century. Conflict with Arius and Arianism as well as successive Roman emperors shaped Athanasius's career. In 325, at the age of 27, Athanasius began his leading role against the Arians as a deacon and assistant to Bishop Alexander of Alexandria during the First Council of Nicaea. Roman emperor Constantine the Great had convened the council in May–August 325 to address the Arian position that the Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, is of a distinct substance from the Father. Three years after that council, Athanasius succeeded his mentor as archbishop of Alexandria. In addition to the conflict with the Arians, he struggled against the Emperors Constantine, Constantius II, Julian the Apostate and Valens. He was known as "Athanasius Contra Mundum". —BOOKS— AGAINST THE HEATHEN LATER TREATISES OF SAINT ATHANASIUS SELECT TREATISES OF SAINT ATHANASIUS THE FESTAL EPISTLES OF SAINT ATHANASIUS THE PARADISE OF THE HOLY FATHERS PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Historical Tracts of S. Athanasius, Archbishop of Alexandria by Athanasius Alexandria,John Newman Pdf

Eight of the most important writings and tracts of Saint Athanasius of Alexandria are published here complete. Born at the end of the 3rd Century, Athanasius of Alexandria served as the twentieth bishop of Alexandria; city of utmost importance to the early Christians. At the time Athanasius was born, the Roman Empire had not yet converted to the Christian creed and was actively suppressing the faith by persecuting clandestine groups of Christians living and practicing their beliefs throughout its dominion. As Athanasius came of age however, the Emperor Constantine proclaimed the Edict of Milan. This gave Christians a legal status in the Empire, and formally ordered a conclusion to the persecutions. Despite the decreed cessation however, hostilities between distinct groups of Christians - the Arians and the Trinitarian Christians - would characterize Athanasius's life in the priesthood. Amid an atmosphere of political and religious upheaval, Athanasius trod a delicate line: nicknamed Athanasius Contra Mundum (Athanasius Against the World), he would attempt to negotiate and parley along the lines of the faith. Renowned for his measured, diplomatic approach to his office of bishop, Athanasius's writings display his careful consideration. Respect, even among those who disagreed with his spiritual views, was widespread and he was praised by those who succeeded him. This book represents a collection of eight works by Athanasius. The Epistles he delivered against the beliefs of the Arians, and the communiques he issued in response to enactments by the church, are present. Athanasius would write several letters to other, local bishops situated in Egypt, Libya and elsewhere in an effort to promote understanding and unity among his fellow Christians. All of these writings offer an evocative impression of the nascent Christianity as it grew into an organized and accepted religion. The final work in this collection is The History of the Arians, a lengthy tract which outlines the various persecutions that the Arians suffered. Rome's brutality towards the Arian practitioners continued under Constantine's rule, and was present in many of the cities and towns under Roman rule, and Athanasius catalogs this violence in detail. This edition of Athanasius's tracts is annotated by the celebrated priest and theologian John Henry Newman. Newman, a learned scholar familiar with the era, explains the context for each work, thus allowing the reader to better understand Athanasius's writings.
