The Scandinavian Kingdom of Dublin (Classic Reprint) by Charles Haliday Pdf

Excerpt from The Scandinavian Kingdom of Dublin Merchants are not much given to the making of books. They seldom leave behind them any of their own composing, save their cash books and their ledgers. There can scarcely be named a merchant in the ranks of literary writers, except Rogers, author of the "Pleasures of Memory" and other poems, rather satirically described by Byron as "the bard, the beau, the banker." But a banker is not a merchant, and often gives no more to the bank than his money and his name, and employs his time and his leisure as he likes. Whence comes this disinclination to literary labour? It is not so much perhaps that the merchant's mind is too absorbed in business to leave him leisure as that it would detract from his character to be suspected of literary pursuits. Poetry was at one time held to be as derogatory to a lawyer. Sir Richard Cox had a strong bent to poetry (says Walter Harris). He wrote some lines on the death, in 1696, of Lord Chancellor Porter, Sir Richard being at that time a Judge of the Common Pleas. But his verses being transmitted to his friend and patron, Sir Robert Southwell, Sir Robert wrote in reply that poetry was not the way to preferment, but a weed in a judge's garden. Poetry is classed among the liberal arts. If there be illiberal ones perhaps they may be those having the direct pursuit of wealth for their aim. The Northern Conquest by Katherine Holman Pdf

"This book reveals another very different side of Viking society. It claims that the Viking legacy was not simply one of 'rape and pillage', but included law and order, agriculture and trade, as well as language and heroic literature. It also provides evidence that the influence of Scandinavians in the British Isles continued well after 1066"--Jacket.

Ireland and Scandinavia in the Early Viking Age by Howard B. Clarke,Raghnall Ó Floinn Pdf

"Loscad Rechrainne o geinntib, 'the burning of Rechru [Rathlin Island, Co. Antrim] by heathens': thus is the first Viking raid on Ireland recorded in the Annals of Ulster under the year 795. The 1200th anniversary of this event was marked by an international conference in Dublin, the proceedings of which are published in this volume. It contains papers devoted to archaeology, history and literature and covers the full span of Irish-Scandinavian relations during the early Viking Age up to c. 1000 in the light of the most recent research. The published proceedings also contain overviews of the subject from both Irish and Scandinavian perspectives."--

The Vikings in Britain by Henry Loyn Pdf

Drawing from recent archaeological and linguistic evidence, as well as more traditional literary and narrative sources, the author distinguishes between the initial phase of migrations in the ninth and tenth centuries, and the secondary period of settlement up to c. 1100 AD. He emphasizes, too, the differences in nature and intensity of the Viking impact on the societies that were slowly developing into the historic kingdoms of England and Scotland, and the more complex political structures of Wales and Ireland. Throughout the book, the effects of the Scandinavian invasions on Britain are set within the wider European context.

A Viking Market Kingdom in Ireland and Britain by Tom Horne Pdf

Viking-Age trade, network theory, silver economies, kingdom formation, and the Scandinavian raiding and settlement of Ireland and Britain are all popular subjects. However, few have looked for possible connections between these phenomena, something this book suggests were closely related. By allying Blomkvist’s network-kingdoms with Sindbæk’s nodal market-networks, it is argued that the political and economic character of Viking-Age Britain and Ireland – my ‘Insular Scandinavia’ – is best understood if Dublin and Jórvík are seen as being established as nodes of a market-based network-kingdom. Based on a dataset relating to the then developing bullion economies of the central and eastern Scandinavian worlds and southern Scandinavia in particular, it is argued that war-band leaders from, or familiar with, ‘Danish’ markets like Hedeby and Kaupang transposed to Insular Scandinavia the concept of polities based on establishment of markets and the protection of routeways between them. Using this book, readers can think of interlinked Dublin and Great Army elites creating an Insular version of a Danish-style nodal market kingdom based on commerce and silver currencies. A Viking Market Kingdom in Ireland and Britain will help specialist researchers and students of Viking archaeology make connections between southern Scandinavia and the market economy of the Uí Ímair (‘descendants of Ívarr’) operating out of the twin nodes of Dublin and Jórvík via the initial establishment of Hiberno-Scandinavian longphuirt and the related winter-camps of the Viking Great Army.

The Scandinavians from the Vendel Period to the Tenth Century by Judith Jesch Pdf

Ethnographic studies trace the background to and impact of urbanisation and Christianisation, and the development of royal power, which stimulated the transition from the Viking age to the medieval period. Using the evidence of archaeology, poetry, legal texts and annals, this volume investigates the social, economic and symbolic structures of early Scandinavia at the time of the Viking expansion. The contributors provide an outlineethnography, covering dwellings and settlements, kinship and social relations, law, political structures and external relations, rural and urban economies, and the ideology of warfare. The topics are discussed through case-studies, illustrating the changing scholarly interpretations of this formative period in Scandinavian history. By addressing these key research questions, the contributions trace the background to and the impact of urbanisation and Christianisation, and the development of royal power, which stimulated the transition from the Viking age to the medieval period in Scandinavia. JUDITH JESCH is Professor in Viking Studies at the University of Nottingham. Contributors: LENA HOLMQUIST OLAUSSON, BENTE MAGNUS, E. VESTERGAARD, BIRGIT ARRHENIUS, STEFAN BRINK, LISE BENDER JORGENSEN, SVEND NIELSEN, FRANDS HERSCHEND, NIELS LUND, DAVID N. DUMVILLE, JUDITH JESCH, DENNIS H. GREEN.
