The Sensual Retiree by Gordon Smith,Gordon George Smith Pdf

An engaging plot of love and life we follow Joan's most renewing encounters from her mid-sixties up into her early nineties. We learn that love for life doesn't have to die before we do and that women certainly don't diminish with age.Joan had expected her retirement to be fairly straightforward. She had always associated the word, to "retire" something, as putting it out of harm's way, out of reach from the rest of the world for the rest of its time on earth. She rather relished in ideas of this isolation, associating it with the effortless simplicity of relaxation. So, undoubtedly, it came as quite a surprise when things didn't go to plan. With the premature death of her husband, Phil, so early-on into her retirement Joan packed up the family home and moved everything she owned into a retirement village on the coast, intending on living the rest of her days on earth like a ghost, well and truly forgotten by everyone else. Well and truly "retired". She had expected to give up, living day by day eating cups of liquid pudding and reading old books. What she hadn't expected was to meet a string of distinguishing people in that very place that would make giving up a little more difficult than she had planned. From a retired nun, a Hollywood producer or a series of prudent friends that would later become wistful lovers. These compelling encounters help Joan to reclaim an appetite for passions she hadn't allowed herself to think about in decades. Joan's life in retirement will be anything other than straightforward.

The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 18 by Thomas Jefferson Pdf

A new definitive volume of the retirement papers of Thomas Jefferson This volume’s 627 documents feature a vast assortment of topics. Jefferson writes of his dread of “a doting old age.” He inserts an anonymous note in the Richmond Enquirer denying that he has endorsed a candidate for the next presidential election, and he publishes two letters in that newspaper under his own name to refute a Federalist claim that he once benefited by overcharging the United States Treasury. Jefferson does not reply to unsolicited letters seeking his opinion on constitutional matters, judicial review, and a call for universal white male suffrage in Virginia. Fearing that it would set a dangerous precedent, he declines appointment as patron of a new society “for the civilisation of the Indians.” Jefferson is also asked to comment on proposed improvements to stoves, lighthouses, telescopes, and navigable balloons. Citing his advanced age and stiffened wrist, he avoids detailed replies and allows his complaint to John Adams about the volume of incoming correspondence to be leaked to the press in hopes that strangers will stop deluging them both with letters. Jefferson approves of the growth of Unitarianism and predicts that “there is not a young man now living in the US. who will not die an Unitarian.”

The Cambridge Companion to English Literature, 1650-1740 by Steven N. Zwicker Pdf

This volume offers an account of English literary culture in one of its most volatile and politically engaged moments. From the work of Milton and Marvell in the 1650s and 1660s through the brilliant careers of Dryden, Rochester, and Behn, Locke and Astell, Swift and Defoe, Pope and Montagu, the pressures and extremes of social, political, and sexual experience are everywhere reflected in literary texts: in the daring lyrics and intricate political allegories of this age, in the vitriol and bristling topicality of its satires as well as in the imaginative flight of its mock epics, fictions, and heroic verse. The volume's chronologies and select bibliographies will guide the reader through texts and events, while the fourteen essays commissioned for this Companion will allow us to read the period anew.
