The Slow Road to Deadhorse by James Anthony Pdf

The community of Deadhorse, Alaska (population 25) lies 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle, at the northern terminus of the Pan-American Highway, the longest road in the world. Key West, Florida, sits at the southern tip of the Florida Keys, an archipelago of coral islands jutting into the Caribbean warmth of the Mexican Gulf. Between Key West and Deadhorse lies most of North America. Londoner James Anthony decided to drive between the two, adjusting his GPS settings to 'avoid highways, ' letting an inanimate piece of technology guide him left-right through the byways, back roads, country lanes and mountain passes of this vast continent. Along the way, he was serenaded in an African-American Church in Miami; went peanut farming in Georgia; hitched a ferry ride across the Mississippi with moonshine-drinking locals; got drunk with a North Dakotan farmer who had three months to live; survived a haunting in Saskatchewan; was nearly squashed by an irate buffalo in the Northern Rockies; and arrived at the Arctic Ocean just before freeze-up. Part travelogue, history, social commentary, and good-time escapism, The Slow Road to Deadhorse chronicles an Englishman's road-trip through the North America most people never get to see.

Dodging burly wildlife keen to take a bite out of him, he meets the quirky, good-hearted folk of North America’s backwaters, learning how Britain influenced the continent’s history, much of it painfully unsavoury. The Curse of Dead Horse Canyon by Marcha Fox,Pete Risingsun Pdf

In 1879 a drunken hoard of silver miners raided a Cheyenne village while the tribe's warriors hunted buffalo. A small band of young braves, not yet old enough to join the hunt, escaped and rode for help. Their efforts failed when they were discovered by the raiders, who ran them over a cliff along with all the tribe's horses that had been left behind. When the warriors returned and found the devastation, the tribe's medicine man, Black Cloud, placed a curse on the site. A century and a half later, a scandalous Top Secret project is under construction in the same Colorado wilderness. Bryan Reynolds discovers that its roots lie in the same greed, corruption, and exploitation of the Earth that precipitated the curse. But before he can expose what he's found, he's killed in a suspicious accident that his wife, Sara, miraculously survives. Her memory of where they were or what they'd discovered, however, is gone. Neither Sara nor Bryan's life-long Cheyenne friend, Charlie Littlewolf, will rest until they find out what Bryan discovered that resulted in his death. Charlie is acutely aware that the only way to solve the mystery is through connecting with the grandfather spirits. To do so he must return to his roots and the teachings of his medicine man grandfather. His journey back to the Cheyenne way includes ancient rituals and ceremonies that guide him and Sara to the answers they seek. As a descendant of Black Cloud, his destiny is deeply embedded in the fulfillment of the original curse, which was triggered by what Bryan discovered. Charlie's quest has only just begun. A government conspiracy lies at the core of the story, though this first volume of the trilogy concentrates on Sara and Charlie discovering what Bryan knew that got him killed. Modern man's disregard for the environment, which conflicts with Native American philosophies of animism and of honoring the Earth, plays an important part. Past pollution caused by 19th century mining is inherent to the story as well as contemporary activities such as fracking. Various paranormal and supernatural elements including detailed descriptions of Cheyenne rituals and ceremonies such as the sacred red pipe, ceremonial fasting, and the sweat lodge are included. The Cheyenne's name for the Great Spirit is Maheo, who is referred to throughout. There are numerous other-worldly situations included, based on the experiences of the story's Cheyenne co-author. While the story is fictitious, these depictions are authentic. Modern technology plays a significant role in juxtaposition to traditional Native American elements. Astronomy and the ancient art and science of western astrology play roles as well in helping direct Sara and Charlie to the answers they need. In essence this saga's theme includes the collision of two disparate cultures and their respective attitudes toward the Earth, one of which is honor, the other exploitation. These complexities are what expanded this story into a trilogy. Native American history is touched upon, but will be covered in greater detail in subsequent volumes.

America's Greatest Road Trip! by Tom Cotter Pdf

Ride along with author Tom Cotter and photographer Michael Alan Ross as they pilot their Ford Bronco/Airstream Basecamp combination 8,881 miles along the lower 48’s back roads and byways. Tom Cotter has spent decades ferreting out lost “barn find” collector cars. The process has made him an ardent road tripper, logging thousands of miles every year on America’s back roads. Previous journeys have traced Route 66 in his 1939 Ford Woody wagon and followed the Lincoln highway coast to coast behind the wheel of a 1926 Model T. Cotter’s journeys led him to wonder: What could be the most epic American road trip? The answer: Key West, Florida, to Deadhorse, Alaska, its thousands of miles recounted in America’s Greatest Road Trip. Cotter and Ross drove across the country, through British Columbia and the Yukon, and finally through Alaska to the literal end of the road. Ross documented their road time in thousands of photographs. Along the way, the pair met fellow road trippers, adventurers, small-town Americans, world travelers, and rolled through an ever-changing geography from the Gulf of Mexico to the Mississippi Delta to the Great Plains and Mountain states through the Northwest Passage and finally several hundred miles of Alaska’s challenging ALCAN Highway. Cotter’s observations of Two-Lane America are complemented by Ross’s beautiful photography capturing both the sweep and the detail of life off the beaten path. Join them on their once-in-a-lifetime journey—you’ll be glad you came along for the ride.

Coming of the Storm Clouds by Ronald Lee Christopher Pdf

Coming of the Storm Clouds, as the author notes, came to him because it seems to him that every time there is a storm, something bad happened. He recalls talking in length with his grandmother after he returned from Vietnam about what it was like growing up in the late 1800s and the early 1900s. To him Valera told some very interesting stories. He talked to his own mother to fill in the gaps. The words of those two grand people, and a few others, lie within the covers of this book. Even a few secrets are revealed.

God is on the Road by Paul Dixon PhD Pdf

GOD IS ON THE ROAD Would you like to grow in awareness of God’s presence in your life? Paul Dixon shows how experiences of driving lead to reflections on living, alerting us to the inner pilgrimage—a journey we are all called to make. Whether you are a believer or an unbeliever, God is on the highway of life and He wants to journey with you. This book’s metaphoric use of driving and the road scene will help you to listen and respond to God who is deeply in love with you. God is on the Road is written for the general reader. It is a Christian spiritual book, yet relevant for all seeking love. The book functions like a pair of divine driving glasses, helping you glimpse God’s presence in your life. Each chapter is packed with short reflections to be dipped into a little at a time, challenging you to reflect on your life—your love story—with and to God. “God is on the Road is designed to help the reader to slow down and spend time with God. There are many aphorisms that stop the reader in his (her) tracks. This book would make an excellent addition to the seminarian reading list. Its many comparisons would provide some telling anecdotes for Sunday homilists. This is an original, thoughtful and helpful book.” Canon David Annear (Ret.), Diocese of Plymouth, United Kingdom.
