The Society of Artists of Great Britain, 1760-1791, the Free Society of Artists, 1761-1783 by Algernon Graves Pdf

Excerpt from The Society of Artists of Great Britain, 1760-1791, the Free Society of Artists, 1761-1783: A Complete Dictionary of Contributors and Their Work From the Foundation of the Societies to 1791 The Royal Academy Exhibitors have induced me to continue the series by producing a companion volume of the two earlier Societies, thereby carrying the records of the works of English artists back to the year 1760, when the first public exhibition took place in England. In common with the Lists of Exhibitors at other London Exhibitions, this work was compiled over thirty years ago, and the manuscript volumes have ever since been of great use for reference. The catalogues of these early exhibitions are very difficult to obtain, and there is, I believe, no complete set of printed copies in existence, those in public institutions being completed by manuscript copies. To lovers of art this volume will present the only easily available means of knowing what pictures were exhibited by well-known artists before the foundation of the Royal Academy. Upwards of works were Shown at these exhibitions. To make the volume still more interesting, I have endeavoured to give an account of these Societies by reprinting portions of books written at the time of the exhibitions, or shortly afterwards. In this very little attempt has been made to introduce original matter, but I feel that the extracts from books now exceedingly scarce will prove of value. Pictorial Embroidery in England by Rosika Desnoyers Pdf

The little-known art of Berlin Work was once the most commonly practiced art form among European women. Pictorial Embroidery in England is the first academic study of both pictorial Berlin Work and its precursor, needlepainting, exploring their cultural status in the 18th and 19th centuries. From enlightenment practices of copying to the development of an industrial aesthetic and the making of the modern amateur, Berlin Work developed as an official knowledge associated with notions of cultural and scientific progress. However, with the advent of the Arts and Crafts movement and modernist aesthetics, Berlin Work was gradually demoted to a craft hobby. Delving into the social, cultural and economic context of English pictorial embroidery, Pictorial Embroidery in England recovers Berlin Work as an art form, and demonstrates how this overlooked practice was once at the centre of cultural life.

The King's Artists : The Royal Academy of Arts and the Politics of British Culture 1760-1840 by Holger Hoock Pdf

This is the story of the forging of a national cultural institution in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain. The Royal Academy of Arts was the dominant art school and exhibition society in London and a model for art societies across the British Isles and North America. This is the first study of its early years, re-evaluating the Academy's significance in national cultural life and its profile in an international context. Holger Hoock reassesses royal and state patronage of the arts and explores the concepts and practices of cultural patriotism and the politicization of art during the American and French Revolutions. By demonstrating how the Academy shaped the notions of an English and British school of art and influenced the emergence of the British cultural state, he illuminates the politics of national culture and the character of British public life in an age of war, revolution, and reform.

A Checklist of Painters, C1200-1994 Represented in the Witt Library, Courtauld Institute of Art, London by Witt Library Pdf

The Witt Library of the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, is one of the world's greatest art history libraries. It contains some 1.7 million illustrations of the work of painters, draughtsmen, and engravers of the Western tradition, all of whom have been indexed by name, dates, and nationality. This new second edition of the Checklist of Painters is a transcription of the Witt index as it currently exists. The names of 66,000 artists, their dates, and their nationality (or school) are reproduced in alphabetical order. The Checklist of Painters is probably the most exhaustive work of its kind in existence; it now lists all painters (known by art historians) to have lived and worked from the year 1200 to 1994.
