The Story of Siena and San Gimignano (Classic Reprint) by Edmund Garratt Gardner Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of Siena and San Gimignano This present volume is intended to provide a popular history of the great Republic of Siena, in such a form that it can also serve as a guide-book to that most fascinating of Tuscan cities and its neighbourhood. San Gimignano has been included, because no visitor to Siena leaves the "fair town called of the Fair Towers" unvisited; I have made special reference to it in the title of the book, to lay stress upon the point that, although for administrative purposes San Gimignano is included in the province (and in the circondario) of Siena, its history is practically distinct from that of Siena and is more intimately connected with the story of Florence. The appended list of books and authorities, needless to say, is not a complete bibliography, nor even a catalogue of those quoted in the course of this work. It only represents some of those that my readers will find most useful and helpful, or that will supply further information upon many topics which the limits of this series of Mediaeval Towns have compelled me to treat somewhat cursorily and scantily. The lamented death of Miss Helen M. James deprived us of her assistance in the illustration of the last three chapters, more especially of the two dealing with San Gimignano. Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ... ( 131 ) CHAPTER VIII. ST. CATHERINE AND ST. DOMENIC. Catherine is the saint who claims most worship from the Sienese, and many are the books that have been written concerning her life; but at this distance of time it is hard to discern fully her true life from the many apocryphal records of the Romish Church, for since most of her biographies have been compiled with a devotional object, the miraculous covers a very wide area. She was born in 1347, being one of a large family, whose father Griacomo Benincasa carried on trade as a dyer not far from the Porta Fontebranda, whither the ample supply of water attracted those whose trades could not dispense with it. From her earliest years her character seems to have been the same. As a mere child she was always a welcome guest in the houses of neighbours, who called her by the name of Euphrosyne; and while still in her seventh year, she wept bitterly because her brother spoke to her suddenly as they came down the hill facing St. Domenico, thereby causing to vanish a glorious vision of Christ and His angels? She was of a spiritual and ecstatic nature, with a very vivid imagination, and a desire beyond that of most children to put in practice what was in her thoughts; and to these causes must be attributed such visions as mentioned above, and her supposed call to a hermit's life in one of the caves near Siena, and her dismissal again home by the same spiritual voice. As she advanced in years she was subjected to no little ill-usage, for declining to marry. The servant was dismissed, and all the household drudgery was put upon her, all of which she bore patiently; and finally her honest superstitious father, happening to come into her room one day when she was kneeling in prayer with a white...

To the discovery of the Chianti Wine Road. From Florence to San Gimignano and Siena passing by way of Volterra by Danilo Papi Pdf

Does another Chianti guide really make sense? It does, if written by an author hailing from Chianti. The author is indeed a real Chianti native who, with his camera, has traveled this territory far and wide to accompany us through its extraordinary particularities. Very often there is still a lack of adequate support to visit the so-called minor areas, which indeed are not minor, as shown by the Chianti territory so rich in art, breathtaking landscapes, history and food. This guide wants to fill this void, accompanying us with simplicity and frankness through unusual itineraries, villages, churches and abbeys where, in addition to works of art, we will be able to learn about lesser-known glimpses, Tuscan expressions, owners of shops and clubs frequented by Chianti residents, the “chiantigiani”. Briefly, there is everything we need here: a local friend who, with suggestions, anecdotes and advices, accompanies us in discovering Chianti with some excursions to the nearby wonders of Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Certaldo, Volterra.
