The Story of the Madiai by Anonim Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of the Madiai: With Notices of Efforts Made, in Europe and America in Their Behalf This Volume contains a record of the imprisonment, trial, and condemnation of two persons, in comparatively humble life, in Italy, on grounds, which seem to American minds, most extraordinary. They had come, through the reading of the Scriptures, and other means, to the knowledge of what they deemed to be the true Gospel, and had, as a consequence, abandoned the Roman Catholic Church - the established Church of Tuscany. Following their convictions of duty, they endeavored to impart the knowledge of what they believed to be the "Truth as it is in Jesus" to their friends and neighbors, beginning with the members of their household. For this purpose they read the Bible, in the Protestant version, that of Diodati's, which they very naturally preferred to that of Martini, which is Roman Catholic. In doing all this, they believed that they were not violating the laws of their country - much less those of God. For the Union and the Catholic Church by Max Longley Pdf

Four men joined the Catholic Church in the mid-1840s: a soldier, his bishop brother, a priest born a slave and an editor. For the next two decades they were in the thick of the battles of the era--Catholicism versus Know-Nothingism, slavery versus abolition, North versus South. Much has been written about the Catholic Church and about the Civil War. This book is the first in more than half a century to focus exclusively on the intersection of these two topics.

The Life and Times of Samuel Prideaux Tregelles by Timothy C. F. Stunt Pdf

This book sheds light on the career of Samuel Prideaux Tregelles, and in doing so touches on numerous aspects of nineteenth-century British and European religious history. Several recent scholars have celebrated the 200th anniversary of the German textual critic Tischendorf but Tregelles, his contemporary English rival, has been neglected, despite his achievements being comparable. In addition to his decisive contribution to Biblical textual scholarship, this study of Tregelles’ career sheds light on developments among Quakers in the period, and Tregelles’s enthusiastic involvement with the early nineteenth-century Welsh literary renaissance usefully supplements recent studies on Iolo Morganwg. The early career of Tregelles also gives valuable fresh detail to the origins of the Plymouth Brethren, (in both England and Italy) the study of whose early history has become more extensive over the last twenty years. The whole of Tregelles’s career therefore illuminates neglected aspects of Victorian religious life.
