The book is abridged from the author's large "Manual of Operative Surgery." That work aims at dealing in an exhaustive manner with the whole subject of operative surgery, or of treatment by operation. This hand-book concerns itself only with the most essential and most commonly performed operations. All matters save such as deal with the actual technical details of operative surgery have been omitted. I have not discussed the general principles of operative surgery, nor have I entered into a critical consideration of the value of various methods. I have assumed that the reader is familiar with the anatomy of the district concerned in each section, and I have omitted all accounts of the after-treatment. I have given no description of instruments and have left untouched the subjects of mortality and results. Originally the teaching was confined to the ligation of vessels, typical operations on the limbs and a few facial and cranial resections. These operations used to play an important part, in the practice of surgery, but with further progress they have given place to others more frequently performed and therefore more essential. The surgical course was thus in need of a thorough modernizing. Many of the newer text-books have already taken account of the requirements, but I think my friend and pupil. Professor Schmieden, has accomplished the work of modernizing in a peculiarly happy manner. Not neglecting the older and approved methods of interference or those ligations that are of practical import, he has managed so to describe the main operations done on the subject that the graduate as well as the student may gain something which will last him through life and be profitable in practice.
