Remarks on the Geographical Distribution of British Plants by Hewett Cottrell Watson Pdf

Excerpt from Remarks on the Geographical Distribution of British Plants: Chiefly in Connection With Latitude, Elevation, and Climate To the friends who have assisted him by their sug gestions, notes, Specimens, or other means, the author begs to return his sincere thanks. Most of such communications are necessarily merged in a general sketch, like the present; but they will be seen, either in the New Botanist'suide, or in the intended work on the distribution of species, both before mentioned. There are few or none of the botanists of Britain, however young in the study, who have not the oppor tunity of affording some assistance to one Investigating the distribution of plants, and desirous of determining the laws which regulateit indeed it is to the young that he chiefly looks for co-o'peration. Mam; have shown themselves willing as well as able to do this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Story of Plant Life in the British Isles by Arthur Reginald Horwood Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of Plant Life in the British Isles: Types of the Common Natural Orders Uring the last decade much headway has been made with the study of plants in their natural surroundings or their habitat. And a new science, ecology, has arisen, which bids fair to revivify the old systematic botany, which had fallen into such dis repute, by allying itself with that branch of botany and raising the study of plants from the systematic standpoint to a higher level. Considering the centuries that have been devoted to systematic botany or the study of the Characters of plants and their relationship to each other, it is indeed to us, in these enlightened days, marvellous that the life of the plant, which includes a study of its habitat, its manner of association and relation ship to the character of the surroundings, had not been considered at all in detail until quite recently. But it is now recognised that the physical surround ings play a great part in the shaping of species, apart from their diversity and the fact that these diversi ties are correlated with plant distribution and plant variation. If, indeed, we can determine the requisite surround ings of a plant we can more surely discover it. And as a great part of geographical botany is concerned with the discovery of the exact distribution of plants, it is highly valuable from this point of view alone. But this is not all, for we learn from the Character of the surroundings its requirements as regards light, heat, moisture, altitude, soil, etc., and the manner in which the plant occurs, either in small communities, large ones or otherwise, helps us to obtain a much broader and more intelligent view of the vegetation of a district, or its physiognomy on a large scale, which in turn reveals to us the bases of scenery and land scape. So that here the painter or the poet may join in the study of botany from a really vital stand point. In general plants are most largely affected by three factors, though there are others which are connected directly or indirectly with these three main factors. Reproductive Biology and Taxonomy of Vascular Plants by J. G. Hawkes Pdf

Reproductive Biology and Taxonomy of Vascular Plants is a collection of papers presented at the Conference on Reproductive Biology and Taxonomy of Vascular Plants, held at the Department of Botany, University of Birmingham on April 23-25, 1965. The conference primarily explores the reproductive biology of flowering plants and ferns to arrive at a better understanding of variation patterns and modes of evolution. This book is divided into six chapters and begins with a discussion on the breeding systems, variation and adaptation. The next chapters survey the practical implications of knowledge of breeding systems and other aspects of the reproductive biology of flowering plants, as well as the pollination mechanisms in orchids and the evolution of this family in relation to insect evolution. These chapters include an account of the foraging behavior of honey bees and its importance to the botanist in delineating the behavior of the insects that pollinate the plants. Other chapters deal with the mechanisms of plant dispersal and establishment, the aspects of seed dormancy, and germination and reproductive capacity related to evolutionary processes. The concluding chapters explore the many aspects of apomixis in its wider sense and survey how the variation patterns of apomicts were due to this special mode of reproduction. This book is directed primarily to botanists.
