Not illustrated. 1834 edition. Excerpt: ... The disease is most prevalent between the ages of twelve and twenty, with the exception of the lower jaw, which is diseased in later years. It is not unfrequently the case, that two bones are at the same time diseased, owing to sympathy and constitutional affections. The process of cure is more rapid in the lower jaw, but is very protracted in the cylindrical bones; for whereas nature may cure the former in the space of a few months, because the bone is small, the circulation is vigorous and near the centre of arterial action, and the patient must eat; she does not cure the latter for a year, or even two, because the bones are generally greater in extent, are farther from the centre of the vascular system, and not necessary to the life of the patient. Treatment: --The indications are several and important; namely, 1. To sedulously meet with antiphlogistic measures the attacks of inflammation which occasionally occur. 2. To build up the constitution and fortify it against the general fever which ofttimes attends. 3. To treat with general measures the constitutional cause of the necrosis, whether it be scrofulous or syphilitic. 4. To promote the separation of the dead bone and the regeneration of the new, by assisting nature, and following her in her attempts, whether it be on the one hand to inclose the sequestrum with living bone, or on the other, to expel it from the fistula created by ulceration; which latter is to be done by an operation hereafter to be described. 5. If, failing in these, the constitution becomes too much affected, then to have recourse to amputation, when practicable, to prevent the patient's death. The first inflammation is necessarily the most extensive and most dangerous, and frequently renders amputation the only..
