The Thorny Road to Success by Karl Maramorosch Pdf

Karl Maramorosch may be best known for his accomplishments as a top scientist, but the story of how he became such a success has never been told—until now. Born in Vienna in 1915, his family moved to Poland, and he fled with his wife, Irene, to Romania in September 1939. They spent four years in Polish refugee camps and were in Soviet-occupied Romania until October 1946, before coming to the United States in January 1947 on an immigration visa. But they did not arrive unscathed: Maramorosch’s father died in the gas chamber in Belzec in 1942, and his mother also died at the camp. His brother died in the Kolomyya jail on Yom Kippur in 1942. His wife’s closest relatives died in Treblinka in 1942. The inseparable couple refused to let any of that stop them from forging ahead: He began a scientific career that spanned more than sixty years, and she became a librarian at the New York Public Library, where she worked thirty years. Maramorosch recalls the painful losses of the past and the brutalities of war, but he also celebrates his love for his wife and life in The Thorny Road to Success.

TV's Betty Goes Global by Janet McCabe,Kim Akass Pdf

Premiering in 2006,Ugly Betty, the award-winning US hit show about unglamorous but kind-hearted Betty Suarez (America Ferrera),is the latest incarnation of a worldwide phenomenon that started life as a Colombian telenovela,Yo soy Betty,la fea, back in 1999. The tale of the ugly duckling has since taken an extraordinary global journey and become the most successful telenovela to date. This groundbreaking book asks what the Yo soy Betty,la fea/Ugly Betty phenomenon can tell us about the international circulation of locally produced TV fictions as the Latin American telenovela is sold to,and/or re-made-officially and unofficially-for different national contexts. The contributors explore what Betty has to say about the tensions between the commercial demands of multimedia conglomerates and the regulatory forces of national broadcasters as well as the international ambitions of national TV industries and their struggle in competitive markets. They also investigate what this international trade tells us about cultural storytelling and audience experience,as well as ideologies of feminine beauty and myths of female desire and aspiration. TV's Betty Goes Global features original interviews with buyers and schedulers, writers, story editors and directors, including the creator of Yo soy Betty, la fea, Fernando Gaitan

Thorny Road to Dignity by Zhong Liu Pdf

Zhong Liu had a strong bond with American establishments, where he had all his education in China before the 1949 revolution. Liu paid the price for his ties and was ostracized into the countryside to embark on a career in farming labor and health services. Firmly believing his fate would change after the reign of Mao, he never ceased preparing for that day by learning foreign languages and researching new medical developments in the countryside. After Mao s death, he resumed his teaching job in a medical school, where he often served as the English interpreter for visiting American professors. Surprised by his fluency in English and current medical knowledge, they sponsored a visit to America for him, just as he had dreamed. It was then the unthinkable happened: Dr. Liu passed the medical license exam on the first try. After experiencing a host of cultural shocks and retraining, he settled in and proved himself to be a competent, board-certified psychiatrist and a successful bilingual writer. Dr. Liu credits his family, especially his wife, with the inspiration and strength to help him endure the hardest times, and it is to her that he dedicates the poem on this book s cover.
