Harnessing Harmony by Billy Coleman Pdf

Following the creation of the United States, profound disagreements remained over how to secure the survival of the republic and unite its diverse population. In this pathbreaking account, Billy Coleman uses the history of American music to illuminate the relationship between elite power and the people from the early national period to the Civil War. Based on deep archival research in sources such as music periodicals, songbooks, and manuals for musical instruction, Coleman argues that a particular ideal of musical power provided conservative elites with an attractive road map for producing the harmonious union they desired. He reassesses the logic behind the decision to compose popular patriotic anthems like "The Star-Spangled Banner," reconsiders the purpose of early American campaign songs, and brings to life a host of often forgotten but fascinating musical organizations and individuals. The result is not only a striking interpretation of music in American political life but also a fresh understanding of conflicts that continue to animate American democracy.

No Party Now by Adam I. P. Smith Pdf

During the Civil War, Northerners fought each other in elections with almost as much zeal as they fought Southern rebels on the battlefield. Yet politicians and voters alike claimed that partisanship was dangerous in a time of national crisis. In No Party Now, Adam I. P. Smith challenges the prevailing view that political processes in the North somehow helped the Union be more stable and effective in the war. Instead, Smith argues, early efforts to suspend party politics collapsed in the face of divisions over slavery and the purpose of the war. At the same time, new contexts for political mobilization, such as the army and the avowedly non-partisan Union Leagues, undermined conventional partisan practices. The administration's supporters soon used the power of anti-party discourse to their advantage by connecting their own antislavery arguments to a powerful nationalist ideology. By the time of the 1864 election they sought to de-legitimize partisan opposition with slogans like "No Party Now But All For Our Country!" No Party Now offers a reinterpretation of Northern wartime politics that challenges the "party period paradigm" in American political history and reveals the many ways in which the unique circumstances of war altered the political calculations and behavior of politicians and voters alike. As Smith shows, beneath the superficial unity lay profound differences about the implications of the war for the kind of nation that the United States was to become.

Songs, Odes, Glees, and Ballads by William Miles Pdf

No candidate for President of the United States was ever elected or rejected because of a song, but since 1800 the campaign song appeared constantly (until 1964) amidst the paraphernalia of the electoral process. These songs, usually set to the common tunes of their day, were printed and distributed in the form of books or pamphlets named songsters. Until now, few serious studies of the American presidential campaign songster have been written. This vital work by William Miles brings bibliographic control to the study of the American presidential campaign by focusing on each campaign's songsters from 1840 to 1964. The book is arranged chronologically according to election campaigns, and within each campaign by winner, loser, and third party candidates. Each entry contains information on authors, lyricists, or composers as determined from song title-pages, the volume itself, or other sources. Complete titles and imprint data follow within each entry, along with descriptive notes and references to libraries holding copies of the volume cited. Appendixes include a campaign song discography and a checklist of secondary sources. Songs, Odes, Glees, and Ballads should prove to be of great value to music librarians, curators of special collections, political scientists with an interest in national election campaigns, historians, and collectors of and dealers in political Americana.
