The Tomb of Tutankhamun: Volume 3 by Howard Carter Pdf

The discovery of the resting place of the great Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun [Tut.ankh.Amen] in November 1922 by Howard Carter and the fifth Earl of Carnarvon was the greatest archaeological find the world had ever seen. Despite its plundering by thieves in antiquity, the burial of the king lay intact with its nest of coffins and funerary shrines, surrounded by a mass of burial equipment arranged in three peripheral chambers. After the long search for the tomb and its initial discovery and excavation (volume 1), after the discovery of the king's resting place and body (volume 2), the third and final volume of Howard Carter's account sees him reach the treasury, full of the incredible riches that the Pharaoh had sort to take with him to the world beyond and which had seemed lost to time before Carter's historic discovery. Now available in the Bloomsbury Revelations series, the book includes over 150 photographs of the treasury and its contents.

The Tomb of Tutankhamun Vol. III by Howard Carter Pdf

Your journey through the discovery of Tutankhamun cannot be complete without Volume III. In this third and final volume of Howard Carter's classic work on his historic discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, he gets down to the details of the objects contained in the Treasury and the Annexe. Neither of these chambers had escaped the attentions of the tomb-robbers who had entered the tomb in antiquity. As Carter describes, both rooms had objects that suffered at the hands of the robbers (and probably the officials charged with resealing the tomb). Nevertheless, with his usual style, Carter treats the objects and the science of the discovery with sensitivity and detail. One is a little tempted to wonder in places (such as the description of desert plants) whether he was trying to fill a contractual length for the book. But even here, Carter shows an extraordinary breadth of knowledge that makes the reading interesting. A specific example is Carter's very good detective work on determining the likely source of moisture that permeated the tomb infrequently during the more than 3,000 years during which it was sealed. Carter's understanding of the geology of the Valley of the Kings and his very intimate knowledge of the state of the tombs that intersect the same stony hillock as the tomb of Tutankhamun gave him particular advantage in this analysis. Thus he tells a very interesting tale about an otherwise dull subject, i.e. rainfall and ground seepage. Howard Carter's book is as relevant today as when it was first published. His long and remarkable career in Egypt added much to our understanding of Egyptian history and burial culture. For the first time, this entire series is available for Kindle. These rare and fascinating books are now affordable and you can take them with you anywhere. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Wonderful Things: A History of Egyptology, Volume 3 by Jason Thompson Pdf

The discovery of ancient Egypt and the development of Egyptology are momentous events in intellectual and cultural history. The history of Egyptology is the story of the people, famous and obscure, who constructed the picture of ancient Egypt that we have today, recovered the Egyptian past while inventing it anew, and made a lost civilization comprehensible to generations of enchanted readers and viewers thousands of years later. This, the third of a three-volume history of Egyptology, follows the progress of the discipline from the trauma of the First World War, through the vicissitudes of the twentieth century, and into Egyptology's new horizons at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Wonderful Things affirms that the history of ancient Egypt has proved continually fascinating, but it also demonstrates that the history of Egyptology is no less so. Only by understanding how Egyptology has developed can we truly understand the Egyptian past.

A History of Ancient Egypt, Volume 3 by John Romer Pdf

The final chapter in the definitive, three-volume history of the world's first known state Archaeologist John Romer has spent a lifetime chronicling the history of Ancient Egypt, and here he tells the epic story of an era dominated by titans of the popular imagination: the radical iconoclast Akhenaten, the boy-king Tutankhamun and the all-conquering Ramesses II. But 'heroes' do not forge history by themselves. This was also a time of international trade, cultural exchange and sophisticated art, even in the face of violent change. Alongside his visionary new history of this, the most famous period in the long history of Ancient Egypt, Romer turns a critical eye on Egyptology itself. Paying close attention to the evidence, he corrects prevailing narratives which cast the New Kingdom as an imperial state power in the European mould. Instead, he reveals - through broken artefacts in ruined workshops, or preserved letters between a tomb-builder and his son - a culture more beautiful and beguiling than we could have imagined. Romer carefully reconstructs the real story of the New Kingdom as evidenced in the archaeological record, and the result - the final volume of a lifelong project - secures his status as Ancient Egypt's finest chronicler.

Following on from the first volume's account of the search for and initial discovery of the team, in the second volume Howard Carter recounts the discovery of the king's burial chamber: the breakthrough to the four protective shrines, the revelation of the quartz-sandstone sarcophagus, the king's three coffins (his own of pure gold) and the bejewelled mummy of the Pharaoh himself. Now available in the Bloomsbury Revelations series, the book includes over 150 photographs of the treasures that lay within the great burial chamber of Tutankhamun.

The Story of Tutankhamun by Garry J. Shaw Pdf

A lively new biography of Tutankhamun—published for the hundredth anniversary of his tomb’s modern discovery The discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 sparked imaginations across the globe. While Howard Carter emptied its treasures, Tut-mania gripped the world—and in many ways, never left. But who was the “boy king,” and what was his life really like? Garry J. Shaw tells the full story of Tutankhamun’s reign and his modern rediscovery. As pharaoh, Tutankhamun had to manage an empire, navigate influential courtiers, and suffer the pain of losing at least two children—all before his nineteenth birthday. Shaw explores the boy king’s treasures and possessions, from a lock of his grandmother’s hair to a reed cut with his own hands. He looks too at Ankhesenamun, Tutankhamun’s wife, and the power queens held. This is a compelling new biography that weaves together intriguing details about ancient Egyptian culture, its beliefs, and its place in the wider world.
