The Torah As an Enlightenment Toolkit by David Lipschitz Pdf

From the Jewish Prayer book, we find the sentence (with transliterated Hebrew letters into English letters): "Va Ne-emar: Ki Fada Adonai Et Jacob, oo Ga-Alo MiYad ChaZak MiMeNu. Baruch Ata Adonai, Ga-Al Yisrael". Translated into English: "And it has been said: 'The Infinite delivered Jacob, and redeemed him from the hand of one stronger than himself.' Blessed is the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel."From this single sentence, David Lipschitz created a hypothesis that we are all Jacobs striving to become Israels, as long as we can be redeemed "from the hand of one stronger than himself." Who or what is this "hand"? How does redemption happen? What messages is Torah giving us to help us on our journey towards enlightenment?David says that we are all Jacobs striving to become Israels. Jacob goes from the dark place, represented by "Egypt", to the light place, represented by "Israel". This Jacob is the Jacob archetype and both men and woman have this Jacob archetype. And both men and women can strive to become the Israel archetype and become enlightened people.David says that we don't jump to enlightenment in a single step, but we have glimpses of enlightenment and becoming enlightened is iterative as God gives us bigger and bigger challenges to overcome as we reach further and further into the darkness so that we can emerge higher and higher into the light. Eventually we are in a boat drifting on the waves, letting a hook down into the darkness to fetch something and then we enlighten that something as we bring it into the light (en-light-en it) and we can process our "stuff" faster and faster.Balaam, a Moabite prophet, is hired by Balak to curse Israel, and instead Balaam says: "How goodly are your tents, O Jacob. They dwellings, O Israel." (David has used this Torah passage in the cover of his book.)Why this use of the words Jacob and Israel in the sentence?Maybe Jacob and Israel are used like House and Home?Let's find out.

In this thoroughly revised edition of his classic work, James A. Sanders introduces the reader to canonical criticism. Tracking the various developments of biblical literature and their acceptance by the communities of faith, Sanders tackles the tough questions. He discusses the differences between the parts of the canon, the editing of the texts by later generations, the diversity of canons used in different communities, how the Dead Sea Scrolls raise new questions for canonicity, and the differences between how Jews and Christians have interacted with their canons. In addition to all the updates and revisions, Sanders provides a new introduction and bibliography.

When Judaism Meets Science by Roger L. Price Pdf

This book seeks to confront the challenge that science presents to the traditional pillars of Judaism. It identifies and analyzes a wide variety of issues, including some contemporary sacred cows. First, the book considers what is fact and what is fiction in the primary stories contained in Judaism’s foundational texts. Then, drawing on Jewish ethical teachings, it seeks to determine how Judaism and science can inform each other with respect to a broad range of contemporary issues, from abortion and allergies to vaccinations and violence with firearms. Finally, it peeks into the future to address issues that Judaism and science are just now beginning to discuss, such as an exotheology for aliens on distant planets, a Jewdroid who seeks acceptance in a shul, and even the fate of the universe itself. When Judaism Meets Science addresses readers of all persuasions—regardless of denomination and whether a believer or not—as the author builds a case, with specific recommendations, for the value of a reality-based Judaism, one grounded on both traditional ethics and empirical evidence that can resonate with the educated adults of Israel.

The Mystics of Mile End by Sigal Samuel Pdf

Sigal Samuel’s debut novel, in the vein of Nicole Krauss’s bestselling The History of Love, is an imaginative story that delves into the heart of Jewish mysticism, faith, and family. “This is not an ordinary tree I am making. “This,” he said, “this is the Tree of Knowledge.” In the half-Hasidic, half-hipster Montreal neighborhood of Mile End, eleven-year-old Lev Meyer is discovering that there may be a place for Judaism in his life. As he learns about science in his day school, Lev begins his own extracurricular study of the Bible’s Tree of Knowledge with neighbor Mr. Katz, who is building his own Tree out of trash. Meanwhile his sister Samara is secretly studying for her Bat Mitzvah with next-door neighbor and Holocaust survivor, Mr. Glassman. All the while his father, David, a professor of Jewish mysticism, is a non-believer. When, years later, David has a heart attack, he begins to believe God is speaking to him. While having an affair with one of his students, he delves into the complexities of Kabbalah. Months later Samara, too, grows obsessed with the Kabbalah’s Tree of Life—hiding her interest from those who love her most–and is overcome with reaching the Tree’s highest heights. The neighbors of Mile End have been there all along, but only one of them can catch her when she falls.
