Modern Etudes and Studies for the Total Percussionist by Chris Colaneri Pdf

In Modern Etudes and Studies for the Total Percussionist, band director and percussionist Chris Colaneri lays out a comprehensive system of total percussion education. The lessons are gleaned from interviews, research, and the nearly two decades he has spent directing middle school band and percussion ensembles. Where the first edition of the book addressed total percussion education for the seventh-grade student and included simple audio examples and practice tracks, this expanded second edition meets needs of sixth- through eighth-grade percussion students, helping them develop intermediate skills for future participation in a high school or extracurricular band setting. Music examples throughout are carefully sized for easy reading, and students will find more information about equipment they should own, world percussion techniques, and famous percussionists. Developed with the practical needs of percussion teachers in mind,Modern Etudes has been extensively classroom tested and provides key teaching aids that will be welcomed by every band director. These include a curriculum guide and practice assignment sheets for all three grades; practice tips; and exercises and etudes for snare, mallet, set, and timpani. Recordings and practice tracks are available on the book's companion website.

Encyclopedia of Percussion by John H. Beck Pdf

The Encyclopedia of Percussion is an extensive guide to percussion instruments, organized for research as well as general knowledge. Focusing on idiophones and membranophones, it covers in detail both Western and non-Western percussive instruments. These include not only instruments whose usual sound is produced percussively (like snare drums and triangles), but those whose usual sound is produced concussively (like castanets and claves) or by friction (like the cuíca and the lion’s roar). The expertise of contributors have been used to produce a wide-ranging list of percussion topics. The volume includes: (1) an alphabetical listing of percussion instruments and terms from around the world; (2) an extensive section of illustrations of percussion instruments; (3) thirty-five articles covering topics from Basel drumming to the xylophone; (4) a list of percussion symbols; (5) a table of percussion instruments and terms in English, French, German, and Italian; and (6) an updated section of published writings on methods for percussion.

A View of the Western Percussion Art Through the Perspective of Its Notated Musical Repertoire by Fabio Fonseca de Oliveira Pdf

This dissertation articulates a history of percussion playing in the western practice identifying two pivotal moments: the 1930s, when the art is formatted; and the 1950s, when it is housed inside of the higher education institution. Through the prism of notated repertoire for percussion, I discuss relevant issues relating to the field including the institutionalization process and its consequences for the idea of percussion, the role of the Percussive Arts Society, the concept of total percussion, and the contemporary marimba repertoire. I conclude by giving a panoramic assessment of the field, identifying a polarization of aesthetic concerns asserted through the repertoire of different lineages of percussion playing.

Global Percussion Innovations by Louise Devenish Pdf

First emerging in North America and Europe in the late 1920s, contemporary percussion practices have transitioned from the fringes of contemporary music to the forefront over the past 90 years. In the 1960s contemporary percussion practices reached Australian shores and a new generation of artists added their voices to this narrative. The role of Australian activity is not yet embedded in the wider narrative of international contemporary percussion, nor is the significance of developments in contemporary percussion practices fully realised in the context of Australian music history. In this monograph, political, social and cultural influences on this art form will be examined for the first time in a historical survey of contemporary percussion music in Australia over a 50-year period, from 1960 to 2010. The rise of the percussion ensemble in the twentieth century to a standard chamber music ensemble is now recognised as one of the major advances in western art music practice internationally. A focus will be placed on ensemble activity via definitive documentation and analysis of ensembles that are amongst the most pioneering and longest established of Australian contemporary music organisations, including the Australian Percussion Ensemble, Synergy Percussion, Adelaide Percussions, Nova Ensemble, Tetrafide Percussion, Taikoz, Clocked Out and Speak Percussion amongst others. Closing with a discussion of influences and identity, this historical narrative will expand our understanding of the impact of Australian contributions to the international contemporary music scene while simultaneously examining how developments in contemporary percussion have contributed to Australia’s cultural identity.

Practical Percussion by James Holland Pdf

The second half of the twentieth century saw vast changes in all aspects of percussion - the instruments themselves, playing techniques, and percussion writing - plus the huge influence of pop music, jazz, and film scores. Additionally, the revolution in travel and communications has meant that composers have become much more aware of a seemingly endless variety of ethnic instruments from around the world. Holland aims to show the world of percussion as it is today, and to answer some common questions about it. Today's professional players frequently find themselves performing in many countries where the availability of percussion instruments can vary widely. Practical Percussion contains a section on manufacturers and suppliers all over the world. In addition to this list of manufacturers, the percussion requirements - both instruments and players - for some 1500 works are also listed. The foreword by Pierre Boulez further assists the reader in appreciating and understanding the richness, variety, and function of percussion instruments the world over.
