The treatment, recovery, recycling and safe disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment by Department of Health: Estates and Facilities Division Pdf

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations (S.I. 2006/3289, ISBN 9780110754796) introduce a new legal framework for the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment by householders and non-household users. This guidance document explains the requirements of the WEEE Regulations and how they affect NHS trusts as users of non-household equipment. Issues covered include: the objectives and scope of the Regulations; key dates and deadlines; links between procurement and disposal; the need to track EEE purchases made at a department/ward level; considerations involved in accepting end-of-life responsibility from producers in new procurement; and links with other waste management legislation.

E-Waste in Transition by Florin-Constantin Mihai Pdf

E-waste management is a serious challenge across developed, transition, and developing countries because of the consumer society and the globalization process. E-waste is a fast-growing waste stream which needs more attention of international organizations, governments, and local authorities in order to improve the current waste management practices. The book reveals the pollution side of this waste stream with critical implications on the environment and public health, and also it points out the resource side which must be further developed under the circular economy framework with respect to safety regulations. In this context, complicated patterns at the global scale emerge under legal and illegal e-waste trades. The linkages between developed and developing countries and key issues of e-waste management sector are further examined in the book.

Safe management of healthcare waste by Great Britain: Department of Health: Estates and Facilities Division Pdf

This publication provides a framework of best practice guidance on the management of healthcare waste to help healthcare organisations and other producers meet legislative requirements. It replaces the Health Services Advisory Committee guidance document 'Safe disposal of clinical waste' (1999). The guidance has been revised and updated to take account of legislative changes governing waste management, storage, carriage, treatment and disposal, health and safety. Key recommendations include: adopting a new methodology for identifying and classifying infectious and medicinal waste called the 'unified approach'; a revised colour-coded best practice waste segregation and packaging system to promote standardisation across the UK; the use of European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes for waste documentation; and an offensive/hygiene waste stream to describe non-infectious waste (human hygiene waste and sanitary protection waste such as nappies, incontinence pads etc.).

Improving the disposal of public sector information, communication and technology equipment by Great Britain: National Audit Office Pdf

The procurement of public ICT equipment is forecast to increase from £2.7 billion in 2005-06 to £4.1 billion by 2010-11 (an increase in volume from 1.7 to 2.6 million units). It is therefore important that public bodies understand how they can generate value from disposals, whilst being clear about their statutory and ethical responsibilities. However best practice in this area is unclear. This report is the first attempt to identify the potential for getting value from ICT disposal, whilst considering the wider environmental costs. One of the findings is that on average the public sector keeps equipment for just under 5 years old when disposal becomes a net cost. The commercial sector typically disposes of equipment after 3 years when there is still some residual value. If this had been done by public bodies the estimated saving in 2005-06 would have been £70 million.
