Branches of Hope by Ann Magee Pdf

“Poetic and meditative, this true-life fable about a tree that survived 9/11 commemorates the attack while evoking a resilient spirit and the healing power of nature. Ann Magee’s spare and lyrical text and Nicole Wong’s soft-edged art afford ample space for young readers to reflect, to hope and to envision a future where peace takes root.” —Carole Boston Weatherford, author of Newbery Honor book BOX “Branches of Hope is a tribute to resilience and hope, a gentle way to talk with our youngest readers about the memory of 9/11.” —Kate Messner, author of The Brilliant Deep: Rebuilding the World's Coral Reefs The branches of the 9/11 Survivor Tree poked through the rubble at Ground Zero. They were glimpses of hope in the weeks after September 11, 2001. Remember and honor the events of 9/11 and celebrate how hope appears in the midst of hardship. The Survivor Tree found at Ground Zero was rescued, rehabilitated, and then replanted at the 9/11 Memorial site in 2011. This is its story. In this moving tribute to a city and its people, a wordless story of a young child accompanies the tree's history. As the tree heals, the girl grows into an adult, and by the 20th anniversary of 9/11, she has become a firefighter like her first-responder uncle. A life-affirming introduction to how 9/11 affected the United States and how we recovered together.

Tree of Hope by Cara Wilson-Granat Pdf

Tree of Hope chronicles Cara Wilson-Granat's extraordinary twenty-year friendship with Otto Frank, father of Anne Frank, featuring their long correspondence. As a young American girl growing up in the turbulent 1960s and 1970s, Cara began conversations with Otto through letters reflecting her chaotic teenage years and the violence in America during those decades. He validated her need to be heard and respected; he became her mentor, her wise "grandfather," as he was for many others worldwide. He truly lived his message. His responses helped her as she matured into a loving, trusting woman. In this fascinating and inspirational memoir we are invited into Cara's and Otto's personal and loving friendship-part of the far-reaching global audience of youth that Otto Frank inspired and mentored during his lifetime. It is an uplifting perspective on what is really important in our lives. Most of all-Hope.

I Found Hope in a Cherry Tree by Jean E. Pendziwol Pdf

Jean E. Pendziwol’s newest picture book is a lyrical meditation on nature and hope. The child in this story observes the sun by playing with her shadow, though sometimes it disappears. She listens to the wind tell stories, even when it howls like wolves. She tastes snowflakes — sometimes sweet and delicate; other times sharp on her cheeks. And finally, she finds hope in the buds on a cherry tree that survive through the winter to blossom in spring. Jean E. Pendziwol has written a layered, lyrical exploration of the hardships and beauties of nature. Her poem, beautifully illustrated by Nathalie Dion, is a study in contrasts and a message of the hope that carries us through the year and through our lives. When a young boy's beloved plum tree falls in a storm, he feels like he's lost both a friend and a connection to his old home. A young boy, recently arrived from Korea, finds a glorious plum tree in his new backyard. It reminds him of a tree his family had back home, and he names it "Plumee" for the deep purple plums on its branches. Whenever the boy is homesick, he knows he can take shelter in Plumee's tall branches. And when a storm brings the old tree down, he and his friends have all kinds of adventures on its branches, as it becomes a dragon, a treehouse, and a ship in their imaginations. But soon it's time to say goodbye when the remains of the tree are taken away. Before long, a new plum tree is planted, new blossoms bloom, and a new friendship takes root. There is Hope for a Tree by Kirsten Nielsen Pdf

Insights gained from the study of metaphorical language in other fields, particularly New Testament parable research, are here applied to the tree metaphors in Isaiah 1-39. The focus of investigation is the content of the metaphors , the intentions underlying their use, and the consequences of that use. The author suggests that (1) the informative function of the tree metaphors is to provide theological interpretations of the political situation; (2) the performative function of the metaphors is to engage the audience in such a way that they adopt the metaphors' interpretation of reality as their own; (3) the use of metaphorical language encourages continual reinterpretation of the original proclamation. The tree in the Garden, the felling of trees, new growth of felled trees and the forest fire, are among the images Isaiah uses to make his political statements. He shows himself to be an extremely competent rhetorician in using these images to instil an active response in his audience. The modes in which the metaphors can be reinterpreted and reapplied in new contexts are perceived as significant not only for the composition of Isaiah, but for that of subsequent religious literature.

In Search of the Canary Tree by Lauren E. Oakes Pdf

The surprisingly hopeful story of one woman's search for resiliency in a warming world Several years ago, ecologist Lauren E. Oakes set out from California for Alaska's old-growth forests to hunt for a dying tree: the yellow-cedar. With climate change as the culprit, the death of this species meant loss for many Alaskans. Oakes and her research team wanted to chronicle how plants and people could cope with their rapidly changing world. Amidst the standing dead, she discovered the resiliency of forgotten forests, flourishing again in the wake of destruction, and a diverse community of people who persevered to create new relationships with the emerging environment. Eloquent, insightful, and deeply heartening, In Search of the Canary Tree is a case for hope in a warming world.
