The Venetian Painters of the Renaissance by Bernard Berenson Pdf

The Venetian Painters of the Renaissance, With an Index to Their Works is one of the most influential books on art history in the United States. Bernard Berenson was the foremost authority on Renaissance art. This was the first in a series of highly successful books outlining his approach to art collecting. Berenson began with Venetian Renaissance painters because Venetian painting represented the lifeblood of the Renaissance more than any other style or place. In an entertaining and concise introductory essay, he explains the extraordinary achievements of Venetian painters. The Venetian Painters of the Renaissance, With an Index to Their Works begins systematically, with chapters on the Value of Venetian Art, The Church and Painting and The Renaissance. This is typical of Berenson, who was known for having both impeccable taste and the ability to discuss art pragmatically. He defines Venetian art and then situates it as springing forth from the Church. The book includes discussion and lists of works by major painters like Lotto, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese, but it also devotes chapters to lesser known old masters. Finally, the book's index summarizes the known facts about all of the paintings by the Venetians. This is a significant resource for collectors and historians. Remarkably, Berenson actually viewed all of the paintings indexed in the book, other than a pair of paintings located in Russia. It is obvious that this mastery of the subject contributes greatly to the book's readability. The Venetian Painters of the Renaissance, With an Index to Their Works is a tour de force explanation of Renaissance art. Painting in Renaissance Venice by Peter Humfrey Pdf

The Renaissance was a golden age in the long history of Venetian painting, and the art that came from Venice during that era includes some of the most visually exciting works in the whole of western art. This attractive book - a comprehensive account of painting in Venice from Bellini to Titian to Tintoretto - is an accessible introduction to the paintings of this period. Peter Humfrey surveys the development of a distinctly Venetian artistic tradition from the middle years of the fifteenth century to the end of the sixteenth century. He discusses the work of Jacopo and Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto as well as the paintings of those less well known - such as the three Vivarini, Cima, Carpaccio, Palma Vecchio, Lorenzo Lotto and Jacopo Bassano. Humfrey analyses these painters' works in terms of their pictorial style, technique, subject matter, patronage and function. He also sets the art against the background of the political, social and religious conditions of Renaissance Venice, as outlined in his Introduction. The book includes an appendix that provides brief biographies of thirty-six of the most important painters active in Renaissance Venice.

Masters of Venice by Sylvia Ferino-Pagden,Lynn Federle Orr Pdf

KEYNOTE: Featuring ffty masterworks by Mantegna, Giorgione, Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto, this stunning book examines the brilliant painters who transformed the art of Renaisssance Venice. Featuring fifty masterworks by Mantegna, Giorgione, Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto, this stunning book examines the brilliant painters who transformed the art of Renaissance Venice. Among the singular moments in the evolution of Western art, the Venetian Renaissance forged an artistic vocabulary of dazzling virtuosity. Celebrating the poetic potential of color and beauty observed in nature, Venetian painters of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries transcended the spatial, textural, and emotional realism of their predecessors to create works unsurpassed in their sensual depictions, velvety surfaces, and unique and glorious treatment of light. Focusing on canonical works from Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum (one of the world's four great imperial museums, along with the Hermitage, the Louvre, and the Prado), this book's lavish illustrations and illuminating essays offer a rich introduction to the treasures of the Venetian Renaissance. Among the spectacular artworks are Mantegna's tortured Saint Sebastian, Titian's enigmatic Bravo (The Assassin) and sumptuous Danäe, and a rare group of paintings by the elusive Giorgione, including Portrait of a Young Woman (Laura) and The Three philosophers. The book also includes exemplary works by Veronese, Palma ecchio, Bordone, and Bassano, among others, revealing the full range of Venetian accomplishment in the Renaissance era. AUTHOR: Sylvia Ferino is director of the Gemaldegalerie of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and an expert on Italian painting. Lynn Federle Orr is curator in charge of European art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Among her recent publications is The Cult of Beauty: The Aesthetic Movement 1860-1900 100 colour illustrations

The Venetian Painters of the Renaissance by Bernard Berenson Pdf

The Venetian Painters of the Renaissance by Bernard Berenson (1865-1959) is the first essay in a four-volume series on Italian painters of the Renaissance and after. This set has become a classic reference work. It is often referred to as the “four gospels”. These books have established the international reputation of their author. Unlike the prevailing conceptions at the time, Berenson establishes a dialogue between the works of art and the viewer. This famous work first appeared in the English language in 1895. Critics were unanimously favourable. It is a monumental work. These texts open the world to their readers. Louis Gillet of the ‘Académie française’ (French Academy) wrote to the author in 1908: “It is perhaps the greatest service you have rendered to the history of art, to have defined better than any another critic the personality of the different schools, for having distinguished, alongside the Florentine school, the special physiognomy of the Umbrian schools, and alongside Venice, the face of the Northern school; to have characterized the different geniuses, to have more precisely than any other delineated the map." Louis Gillet then translated the work into French. In this first volume dedicated to Venice, the reader discovers or rediscovers the painters of the Quattrocento and of the following centuries. The author gives them unity. For undoubtedly the first time in the history of art, he gives us a synthetic and global vision of these painters in their world and their time.
