The View from Below by Kanakalatha Mukund Pdf

How did the British colonial administration view the Tamil natives? How did the natives, in turn, view the colonial power brokers? Underscoring a transactional rather than one-way reality of colonial politics, The View from Below is a balancing act of scholarship. Kanakalatha Mukund considers the 'attitudes' and 'responses' as dialogic, whereby the colonial state and indigenous society are locked in a fierce but subtle combat for attention and dominance in the Madras region. The Tamil institution upon which Mukund focuses her study for the most part is the temple. Moving further on from this politically crucial and socially focal site, the study covers a number of other related phenomena: the staging of sectarian and caste conflicts aimed to seize the control of the temples; the new social leadership and patterns of patronage; the construction of identity by aspiring elite groups of both parties; and the folk representations of Poligar rebellions. This book will be useful to historians, anthropologists and specialists on South India, and those interested in the history of Madras.

New Worlds from Below by Tessa Morris-Suzuki,Eun Jeong Soh Pdf

In Asia today, the grand ideologies of the past have lost their power over the popular imagination. Even in many of the region’s democracies, popular engagement in the political process faces profound challenges. Yet amidst this landscape of political disenchantment, groups of ordinary people across Asia are finding new ways to take control of their own lives, respond to threats to their physical and cultural survival, and build better futures. This collection of essays by prominent scholars and activists traces the rise of a quiet politics of survival from the villages of China to Japan’s Minamata and Fukushima, and from the street art of Seoul and Hong Kong to the illegal markets of North Korea. Introducing an innovative conceptual framework, New Worlds from Below shows how informal grassroots politics in Northeast Asia is generating new ideas and practices that have region-wide and global relevance.

Family, Kinship and State in Contemporary Europe by Hannes Grandits,Patrick Heady,Peter P. Schweitzer,Martin Kohli Pdf

"In this volume the authors examine the history of the family during the twentieth century in the context of political struggles over the welfare state, gender roles and parental authority. They ask how far political measures have contributed to changes in family life, and whether these should be understood as a weakening, or as a redefinition of traditional kinship roles."--

Claiming India from Below by Vipul Mudgal Pdf

Going beyond electoral politics and government, this volume broadens the scope of the functioning of democracy in India, and explores citizens’ role in the implementation of public policy. It looks at the ways in which extra-parliamentary power monitoring devices such as public institutions, citizens’ associations or assemblies, and the mainstream and emerging forms of the media, permeate through the political order. The volume: • brings participation and communication in governance and policy making to the centrestage; • examines case studies of state and citizen engagement from across India; and • presents perspectives of practitioners, activists and scholars to provide a comprehensive view of the debates surrounding the idea of Indian democracy. This book will be useful to scholars and researchers in politics, political science, media studies, public administration, sociology and social anthropology, as well as the interested general reader.

Reading the Comments by Joseph M. Reagle, Jr. Pdf

What we can learn about human nature from the informative, manipulative, confusing, and amusing messages at the bottom of the web. Online comment can be informative or misleading, entertaining or maddening. Haters and manipulators often seem to monopolize the conversation. Some comments are off-topic, or even topic-less. In this book, Joseph Reagle urges us to read the comments. Conversations “on the bottom half of the Internet,” he argues, can tell us much about human nature and social behavior. Reagle visits communities of Amazon reviewers, fan fiction authors, online learners, scammers, freethinkers, and mean kids. He shows how comment can inform us (through reviews), improve us (through feedback), manipulate us (through fakery), alienate us (through hate), shape us (through social comparison), and perplex us. He finds pre-Internet historical antecedents of online comment in Michelin stars, professional criticism, and the wisdom of crowds. He discusses the techniques of online fakery (distinguishing makers, fakers, and takers), describes the emotional work of receiving and giving feedback, and examines the culture of trolls and haters, bullying, and misogyny. He considers the way comment—a nonstop stream of social quantification and ranking—affects our self-esteem and well-being. And he examines how comment is puzzling—short and asynchronous, these messages can be slap-dash, confusing, amusing, revealing, and weird, shedding context in their passage through the Internet, prompting readers to comment in turn, “WTF?!?”

Recollections of the Great War in the Air by James McConnell Pdf

“The memoir of . . . an American pilot flying with the famous French Flying Corps’ American Layfayette Escadrille and provides a unique personal insight.”—Firetrench In 1915 James Roger McConnell enlisted as a US volunteer in the French Flying Corps. He was part of a remarkable band of American volunteers which were formed into the famous Lafayette Escadrille, which was then based at Verdun. This book brings his personal account of the war, Flying for France, to a new generation of readers. His memoirs produce an amazing insight into the early aerial battles and trace the evolution of aerial warfare as the rickety aircraft of 1915 rapidly evolved into the purpose-built fighters of 1917. Casualties among the American Escadrille were very high and McConnell’s own luck finally ran out when he was ambushed by two German fighters and was killed in action in March 1917. His gripping and detailed memoir of the war is his lasting memorial; his honest account of the everyday life of a pilot in the Great War is matched only by Sagittarius Rising. However, his dramatic description of the battlefield of Verdun viewed from above is one of the classic descriptions of any wartime memoir and is unmatched by any other Great War writer. “Resurrects an important part of the first-person literature of the Lafayette Escadrille. A long-lost gem.”—Over the Front “The memoir and letters give a surprising amount of detail about the pilot’s life and tactics employed. McConnell’s story is certainly an interesting one and this is a short and easily digestible introduction to the life of a First World War pilot.”—WW1 Geek

Reports of United States Tax Court, V. 141, July 1, 2013, to December 31, 2013 by Government Publications Office Pdf

Volume of the United States Tax Court Reports containing case abstracts and opinions of the court regarding cases between July 1, 2013 December 31, 2013. Cases in each volume are listed in the prefatory table. The United States Tax Court is a federal trial court of record established by Congress under Article I of the U.S. Constitution, section 8 providing (in part) that Congress has the power to "constitute Tribunals inferior to the Supreme Court. “The Tax Court specializes in adjudicating disputes over federal income tax, generally prior to the time at which formal tax assessments are made by the Internal Revenue Service. Though taxpayers may choose to litigate tax matters in a variety of legal settings, outside of bankruptcy, the Tax Court is the only forum in which taxpayers may do so without having first paid the disputed tax in full. Parties who contest the imposition of a tax may also bring an action in any United States District Court, or in the United States Court of Federal Claims; however these venues require that the tax be paid first, and that the party then file a lawsuit to recover the contested amount paid (the "full payment rule”).” Contents 8 Findings of Fact 8 Background 8 John Hancock’s History9 Investment Process and Review10 Leasing10 LILO and SILO Transactions 10 Basic Structure 15 History 17 Due Diligence 18 The Hoosier Transaction 19 The LILO Test Transactions 20 OBB LILO20 Lease and Sublease23 End of Sublease Term25 SNCB 2 and SNCB 5 Lot 1 LILO Transactions25 Lease and Sublease28 End of Sublease Term 28 The SILO Test Transactions 29 TIWAG29 Lease and Sublease33 End of Sublease Term35 Two Dortmund Transactions35 Lease and Sublease38 End of Sublease39 SNCB SILO39 Grant and Subgrant42 End of Subgrant Term 43 Tax Returns, Notices of Deficiency, and Trial 43 Procedural History48 Trial 53 Opinion 53 Burden of Proof53 Principal Place of Business54 Leveraged Lease Transactions54 Frank Lyon58 LILO and SILO Litigation 77 The Test Transactions 78 Economic Substance79 Objective Inquiry88 Subjective Inquiry89 Substance Over Form91 OBB and SNCB LILO Transactions110 SILO Test Transactions 145 Interest Deductions 147 Original Issue Discount 149 Transaction Expenses 149 Conclusion NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNTS FOR ALREADY REDUCED SALE ITEMS. Bad Republican by Meghan McCain Pdf

With the aptly titled Bad Republican, Meghan McCain expresses how it is to feel like you no longer fit in with your political party. She tells of growing up the daughter of an American icon who shaped her life and details the heartbreaking final moments spent by his side. She recalls her (mis)adventures on the New York dating scene and brings us up to speed on meeting her now-husband. We hear her views on cancel culture and internet trolls as well as life backstage as the sole Republican at America’s most-watched daytime talk show—and why she decided to leave. Revealingly, she relays the awkward phone call she received from Donald and Melania and where she thinks the Republican Party and the country go from here. And with surprising candor, she divulges why a miscarriage and the birth of her daughter have left her so fired up about women’s rights—even if that puts her at odds with her party. Unsparingly honest, deeply relatable, and highly entertaining, Bad Republican is as personal as a story gets. It’s a memoir imbued with an unmistakable maverick spirit.
