ST. JAGO—CAPE DE VERD ISLANDS After having been twice driven back by heavy south-western gales, Her Majesty's ship Beagle," a ten-gun brig, under the command of Captain Fitz Roy, R.N., sailed from Devonport on the 27th of December, 1831. The object of the expedition was to complete the survey of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, commenced under Captain King in 1826 to 1830--to survey the shores of Chile, Peru, and of some islands in the Pacific--and to carry a chain of chronometrical measurements round the World. On the 6th of January we reached Teneriffe, but were prevented landing, by fears of our bringing the cholera: the next morning we saw the sun rise behind the rugged outline of the Grand Canary Island, and suddenly illumine the Peak of Teneriffe, whilst the lower parts were veiled in fleecy clouds. This was the first of many delightful days never to be forgotten. On the 16th of January 1832 we anchored at Porto Praya, in St. Jago, the chief island of the Cape de Verd archipelago.

Full of detailed scientific observations, the journal also details his changing beliefs about species, which would go on to inform his theories on evolution and natural selection. Packed full of vivid descriptions, this is a fascinating window into the mind and workings of the renowned naturalist from this now legendary trip. Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist, best known for his work on the science of evolution. His five-year voyage aboard HMS Beagle established him as a geologist and naturalist, and it was knowledge gleaned on this trip that led to his now internationally renowned theory of natural selection. Plagued by ill health in later life, Darwin died at the aged of 73 and was honoured with a burial in Westminster Abbey.

Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin Pdf

A classic of adventure travel, this landmark of natural history is also a cornerstone in the development of evolutionary theory. The Beagle departed from England in 1831 on a voyage to map the coast of South America. Its two-year itinerary stretched into five years, and the ship's naturalist, young Charles Darwin, made the observations that led to his concept of natural selection. Darwin based many of his conclusions upon his study of the unique creatures of the Galp̀agos: marine and land iguanas, giant tortoises with a variety of shells, and more than 20 species of finches, each with a distinctive beak. Upon his return home in 1836, Darwin published a series of books based on the notebooks and diaries from his voyage, including this historic work, essential reading for scientists, historians, and anyone with an interest in the natural world.
