A Diplomatic Diary, 1917 (Classic Reprint) by Hugh Gibson Pdf

Excerpt from A Diplomatic Diary, 1917 This volume is not a carefully prepared treatise on the war. It does not set out to prove anything. It is merely What its title indicates - a private journal jotted down hastily from day to day in odd moments, when more pressing duties would permit. Much material has been eliminated as of little interest. Other mate rial of interest has been left out because it cannot be published at this time. It is believed, however, that what is printed here will suffice to give some idea of life in Belgium during the first few months of the war. I have eliminated from the journal most Of the matter about the early history of the Commission for Relief in Belgium. My day-to-day record did not do any sort Of justice to the subject, and since it was not adequate, I have preferred to eliminate all but such casual reference to the relief work as is necessary to maintain the narrative. I am reconciled to this treat ment of the subject by the knowledge that the story will be told comprehensively and well by Dr. Vernon Kellogg, who will soon publish an authoritative history of the Commission's work. As former Director of the Commission in Belgium, he has the detailed knowledge of its workings and the sympathetic understanding of its purpose which peculiarly fit him for the task. An Historian in Peace and War by T. G. Otte Pdf

The First World War and subsequent peace settlement shaped the course of the twentieth century, and the profound significance of these events were not lost on Harold Temperley, whose diaries are presented here. An established scholar, and later one of Britain's foremost modern and diplomatic historians, Temperley enlisted in the army at the outbreak of the war in August 1914. Invalided home from the Dardanelles campaign in 1915, he spent the remainder of the war and its aftermath as a general staff officer in military intelligence. Here he played a significant role in preparing British strategy for the eventual peace conference and in finalising several post-war boundaries in Eastern Europe. Later, in the 1920s and 1930s, Temperley was to co-edit the British diplomatic documents on the origins of the war; and the vicissitudes of modern Great Power politics were to be his principal preoccupation. Beginning in June 1916, the diary presents a more or less daily record of Temperley's activities and observations throughout the war and subsequent peace negotiations. As a professional historian he appreciated the significance of eyewitness accounts, and if Temperley was not at the very heart of Allied decision-making during those years, he certainly had a ringside seat. Trained to observe accurately, he recorded the concerns and confusions of wartime, conscious always of the historical significance of what he observed. As a result there are few sources that match Temperley's diary, which presents a fascinating and unique perspective upon the politics and diplomacy of the First World War and its aftermath.

Historian in Peace and War by Thomas Otte Pdf

This volume provides the fully edited and annotated diaries of the scholar, soldier and diplomat Harold Temperley (1879-1939), covering his travels in the Balkans, his work for British military intelligence during the First World War, and his role in the Versailles peace conference. As a trained historian, he was aware of the importance of recording events as they unfolded, and regarded his diary as a means of preserving a non-official record. As such, this edition of Temperley's diaries offers scholars a direct and hitherto neglected perspective on some of the most important events that shape.

After the War by Charles à Court Repington Pdf

Almost from the moment the guns of World War 1 were silenced, talk began about another war in Europe. Controversial journalist and former soldier, Charles Court Repington, visited many of the important political players of the postwar period in 1921 to report on their views of the period and the possibility of second world conflict. For his book, he toured Europe (traveling the Orient Express) and America, even visiting the White House. It is possible that Repington himself, while reporting during World War I, was the first to name the war as such. This book was a bestseller when released but apparently cost Repington friendships when reported conversations that were believed to have been private were included in the book.A fascinating look into the interwar period between WWI and WWII.

The Decision to Employ Nuclear Weapons at Hiroshima and Nagasaki by Joe Majerus Pdf

Throughout human history there may hardly be found any other single decision that still causes such high amounts of scholarly debate as does the dropping of Atomic Bombs upon the Japanese city of Hiroshima in August 6th 1945, and respectively, three days later upon the city of Nagasaki. These events have caused close to 100 000 casualties in the civilian population, and yet, it does not include all of those persons who would later succumb to radiation sickness or severe birth deformations. Historians still debate the alleged plurality of motives underlying this momentous decision. The debate's result is a polarized scholarly discord which by now virtually abounds in a multitude of different theories, and competing suppositions. On the one hand, there are those scholars who argue that the decision rested solely on grounds of military expediency, foremost on the necessity to shorten a gruelling war, and to save the lives of American soldiers. On the other hand, historians offer the explanation that American policy makers above all wanted to exhibit their country's enormous military potency, and therefore, Hiroshima and Nagasaki should demonstrate the vast destructive potential which presently solely the United States had at its command, and so, counter post-war ambitions of the Soviet Union. The author of this study analyses the contextual circumstances in the spring and summer of 1945, and moreover, the principal motives of the key American government officials. Accordingly, the author offers his own substantive and conclusive answer to the question that concerns the primary factors and/or ostensibly ulterior motives that led American decision makers to issue the consequential order to detonate Atomic Bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. First and foremost, the findings rest upon a critical and comprehensive engagement, and are based on the available documentary evidence from this time.

A Quiet Will: The Life of Clara Barton (Abridged, Annotated) by William E. Barton Pdf

Like Florence Nightingale, Clara Barton was so much more than the "Angel of the Battlefield." It was not until the American Civil War that she found her calling. As a young woman, she struggled with the deep emotions that would be a lifelong trait. "1852: I have found it extremely hard to restrain the tears today, and would have given almost anything to have been alone and undisturbed. I have seldom felt more friendless, and I believe I ever feel enough so. I see less and less in the world to live for, and in spite of all my resolution and reason and moral courage and everything else, I grow weary and impatient. I know it is wicked and perhaps foolish, but I cannot help it. There is not a living thing but would be just as well off without me. I contribute to the happiness of not a single object; and often to the unhappiness of many and always of my own, for I am never happy. True, I laugh and joke, but could weep that very moment, and be the happier for it." She received an appointment as clerk in the Patent Office at a salary of $1400 a year. She was one of the first, and believed herself to have been the very first, of women appointed to a regular position in one of the departments, with work and wages equal to that of a man. Then came the catastrophe of the Civil War. Early on, she decided that marriage would not be the direction of her life. She didn't just throw herself into her battlefield work...she reinvented how it should be done. She operated independently from Dorothea Dix and the corps of army nursing. She went where the shells were flying. After the war, she worked tirelessly to find out the fate of missing soldiers. From the beginning of the year 1865 to the end of 1868 she sent out 63,182 letters of inquiry. But her crowning achievement was not the fame she gained and the company of the powerful. She fought tooth and nail against an isolationist United States to gain acceptance of the Treaty of Geneva, which helped her found the American Red Cross. Nearly to the end of her long life, she worked in the field, often at the cost of her own health. But she was no shrinking violet. She knew how to fight quietly and plied her inflexible will upon the causes that mattered most to her: the Red Cross, abolition of slavery, women's rights, and relief of suffering. There has probably not been a better biography of Barton than this two-volume set by William Barton published in 1922. For the first time, both volumes are together in a well-formatted ebook version. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE by clicking the cover above or download a sample.

Racing the Enemy by Tsuyoshi Hasegawa Pdf

With startling revelations, Tsuyoshi Hasegawa rewrites the standard history of the end of World War II in the Pacific. By fully integrating the three key actors in the story—the United States, the Soviet Union, and Japan—Hasegawa for the first time puts the last months of the war into international perspective. From April 1945, when Stalin broke the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact and Harry Truman assumed the presidency, to the final Soviet military actions against Japan, Hasegawa brings to light the real reasons Japan surrendered. From Washington to Moscow to Tokyo and back again, he shows us a high-stakes diplomatic game as Truman and Stalin sought to outmaneuver each other in forcing Japan’s surrender; as Stalin dangled mediation offers to Japan while secretly preparing to fight in the Pacific; as Tokyo peace advocates desperately tried to stave off a war party determined to mount a last-ditch defense; and as the Americans struggled to balance their competing interests of ending the war with Japan and preventing the Soviets from expanding into the Pacific. Authoritative and engrossing, Racing the Enemy puts the final days of World War II into a whole new light.

German Foreign Policy, 1918-1945 by Christoph M. Kimmich Pdf

Christoph Kimmich’s German Foreign Policy, 1918-1945: A Guide to Current Research and Resources is the most comprehensive guide to archival resources and published materials on the foreign policy of Weimar and Nazi Germany. It lists the archives, libraries, and research institutes, public and private, that hold important collections. While Kimmich’s survey emphasizes archives in Germany, it also covers archives in Europe and in the United States, describing their holdings, terms of access and use, and the guides and inventories available. German Foreign Policy, 1918-1945 also includes a substantial bibliography of published sources, from documentary series to significant contemporary accounts, from the memoir literature to secondary works, with annotations appearing for the more important and the more obscure. This select bibliography concentrates only on works that are serious, innovative, and accessible. It describes the various series of the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial Records and the original trial documents available in archives and libraries. Particular attention is given to the vast and ever increasing availability of materials on the Web, ranging from digitized print materials to archival inventories and source materials. Moreover, in order to facilitate work in the archives, the guide explains the organization and functioning of the German foreign ministry between 1918 and 1945 and notes how it kept and stored its records. This third edition differs from its predecessor by offering new and critical information on German archives that have since been consolidated and relocated after German reunification, on archival sources of hitherto unknown provenance, and on materials available on the Web. It is a reference source for both the established scholar and the novice planning research and a guide for their visits to archives and libraries, enabling them to find their way quickly and efficiently through the voluminous research and research materials that have come to light in recent years.
