The Watsons of Kilconnor, County Carlow, 1650 – present by Peter J F Coutts,Alan Watson Pdf

The book describes the history of a humble family that migrated from England to Ireland in the mid 17th c and put down roots at Kilconnor in County Carlow. By the end of the century many members of the family had joined the Society of Friends and concurrently the family had elevated its social and economic status as it enjoined with the landed gentry. During the late 17th c and 18th c family members left County Carlow and established themselves in other places in Ireland, including Counties Wexford, Tipperary, Dublin, Kildare, Laois and Offaly and later again in England Australia and New Zealand. Diversification in occupation followed, members entering the legal, military, banking and medical professions. Others stayed with the land and were caught up with a fascination for horses, fox hunting, polo and racing in Ireland, England and Australia some members acquiring formidable reputations up to the present day. Family members have, for example, contributed to the growth of theatre and prison reform for juveniles in England, the early banking system in Ireland, the growth of the dairy farming in Victoria, Australia, the fostering of pride and interest in exotic gardens in Ireland, the invention of revolutionary instruments for detecting submarines and the invention of the “backhand stoke” in the sport of polo. To this day the family continues to produce exceptional people whose achievements are memorable. John Watson, now living at Ballybolger in County Carlow, is one such example having represented Ireland recently at Olympic equestrian events.

The Watsons of Kilconnor, County Carlow, 1650 – present by Peter J F Coutts,Alan Watson Pdf

This book describes the history of a humble family that migrated from England to Ireland in the mid 17th c and put down roots at Kilconnor, County Carlow. By the end of the century many members of the family had joined the Society of Friends and were part of the landed gentry. During the late 17th c and 18th c family members established themselves elsewhere in Ireland and later in Australia, England and New Zealand where they rose to prominence in a wide variety of roles, eventually abandoning Friends for the established church. Today the family is still held in high regard for its past and ongoing contributions to equestrian sports including horse racing, fox-hunting, polo and in this era, three day eventing. In Ireland, Solomon Watson established a well-known but doomed bank in Clonmel, County Tipperary. John Henry Watson of Ballydarton, County Carlow, master of the Carlow and Island hunt, started the Watsons’ association with hunting in which they became preeminent from the end of the 18th c. After serving in India, a later John Henry Watson helped develop the game of polo, and his Freebooters team won the first international polo match against the Americans. Corona Deane Lecky Watson is remembered with great affection for her exquisite cultivated gardens at Altamont, County Carlow, which she bequeathed to the Republic of Ireland. In recent times John Wilfred Watson represented Ireland in the Olympics, won silver in the world eventing championship and team gold in the Europeans. His son Samuel James Watson won a team silver in the same event in 2018. In England, John Boles Watson established theatres in the South-West, the Midlands and Wales, including the Theatre-Royal in Cheltenham, and in the 20th c John Arthur Fergus Watson became a reforming magistrate, prison visitor, campaigner on juvenile justice, author and president of the Royal Society of Chartered Surveyors. Alister George Douglas Watson was secretary of The Cambridge Apostles and friend of Keynes and Wittgenstein. During WWII he helped design millimetre radar and later became head of anti-submarine warfare research. Peter Wright, the author of ‘Spycatcher’ accused him of being ‘the fifth man’ although later evidence showed otherwise. In Australia, George John Watson, ‘the prince of starters’, developed the hunt in Victoria, ran a coaching business, bred horses, raced and helped found the Victorian Racing Club. His children were well-known sportsmen, adventurers and pioneers in Queensland and the Northern Territory. His cousin William Currie Watson, a popular sportsman, was a pioneer in Gippsland, Victoria, where he cleared 300-ft trees and dense scrub to create a dairy farm and help establish a thriving dairy industry. John Watson, another relative, shipped to New Zealand in 1843 where he was appointed magistrate for the wild frontier district of Akaroa on the South Island. Again, from the 19th c onwards, many family members served with distinction in the military, in India, South Africa, Europe and the middle east. The stories related in this book derive from meticulous research conducted by the authors who have utilied information provided by Watson descendants and from collections of diaries, photographs letters and other documents. The book is printed in colour with 578 pages of well referenced text, 262 illustrations, 30 tables and a comprehensive index. It includes genealogical charts for the various families, a colour code for each branch and an ID number for each individual.

Resurrecting Family Histories and Biographies for Members of the Society of Friends in Ireland by Peter J.F. Coutts,Alan Watson Pdf

Irish Quaker biographers have focused on ministers, the influential and wealthy; many biographies are also unstructured and selective, leaving gaps in the narrative. The current work uses the life and family of John Boles (1661-1731), a Quaker stalwart for 50 years, as a case study for the biographer, introducing the major sources and showing how they can be deployed to 'resurrect' the contributions of the anonymous Quaker majority. As the biography is developed, information is explored and analyzed to construct reliable genealogical charts; information is culled from Friends' records to document the contributions and failures of family members in the context of their Quaker meetings; land records are consulted to measure and assess their gradual accumulation of wealth and the historical context is discussed as a backdrop to their evolving socio-economic status - all topics essential for comprehensive Quaker biographies and family histories.

The Irish Aesthete: Ruins of Ireland by Robert O'Byrne Pdf

Go on a journey with Robert O’Byrne as he brings fascinating Irish ruins to life. Fantastical, often whimsical, and frequently quirky, these atmospheric ruins are beautifully photographed and paired with fascinating text by Robert O’Byrne. Born out of Robert’s hugely popular blog, The Irish Aesthete, there are Medieval castles, Georgian mansions, Victorian lodges, and a myriad of other buildings, many never previously published. Robert focuses on a mixture of exteriors and interiors in varying stages of decay, on architectural details, and entire scenarios. Accompanying texts tell of the Regency siblings who squandered their entire fortune on gambling and carousing, of an Anglo-Norman heiress who pitched her husband out the window on their wedding night, and of the landlord who liked to walk around naked and whose wife made him carry a cowbell to warn housemaids of his approach. Arranged by the country’s four provinces, the diverse ruins featured offer a unique insight into Ireland and an exploration of her many styles of historic architecture.

Lucinda Sly by Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé Pdf

Lucinda Sly is a historical novel from one of the great contemporary Irish language prose writers, Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé. Now celebrated poet Gabriel Fitzmaurice brings this gripping account alive in English. Based on real events that took place in Carlow in 1834-35, Lucinda Sly tells the story of Lucinda Singleton, a widowed mother who married Walter Sly, a well-to-do farmer. He was a drunkard and a brute who so abused his wife that she and her lover, their farm hand John Dempsey, conspired to murder him. They were hanged side by side in public outside Carlow Gaol on March 30, 1835. Lucinda Sly draws a vivid picture of nineteenth-century Ireland, revealing what was often a harsh and unjust society. A haunting and vibrant tale that will remain with you. Lucinda Sly was an award winner at Oireachtas na Gaeilge 2008.

The State, Law, and Religion by Alan Watson Pdf

Written by one of our most respected legal historians, this book analyzes the interaction of law and religion in ancient Rome. As such, it offers a major new perspective on the nature and development of Roman law in the early republic and empire before Christianity was recognized and encouraged by Constantine. At the heart of the book is the apparent paradox that Roman private law is remarkably secular even though, until the late second century B.C., the Romans were regarded (and regarded themselves) as the most religious people in the world. Adding to the paradox was the fact that the interpretation of private law, which dealt with relations between private citizens, lay in the hands of the College of Pontiffs, an advisory body of priests. Alan Watson traces the roots of the paradox--and the way in which Roman law ultimately developed--to the conflict between patricians and plebeians that occurred in the mid-fifth century B.C. When the plebeians demanded equality of all citizens before the law, the patricians prepared in response the Twelve Tables, a law code that included only matters considered appropriate for plebeians. Public law, which dealt with public officials and the governance of the state, was totally excluded form the code, thus preserving gross inequalities between the classes of Roman citizens. Religious law, deemed to be the preserve of patrician priests, was also excluded. As Watson notes, giving a monopoly of legal interpretation to the College of Pontiffs was a shrewd move to maintain patrician advantages; however, a fundamental consequence was that modes of legal reasoning appropriate for judgments in sacred law were carried over to private law, where they were often less appropriate. Such reasoning, Watson contends, persists even in modern legal systems. After sketching the tenets of Roman religion and the content of the Twelve Tables, Watson proceeds to such matters as formalism in religion and law, religion and property, and state religion versus alien religion. In his concluding chapter, he compares the law that emerged after the adoption of the Twelve Tables with the law that reportedly existed under the early Roman kings.

Jesus and the Law by Alan Watson Pdf

In Jesus and the Law, Alan Watson measures the success of Jesus's ministry by explaining his attitude toward, and knowledge of, certain laws and legal customs. Watson argues that Jesus engendered harsh responses from his fellow Jews by his apparently contemptuous or insensitive behavior that stemmed from a lack of knowledge or concern about legal and rabbinic strictures. Informed by Watson's knowledge of Jewish and Roman law and ancient history, and his skillful relation of Mishnaic and Talmudic materials to the time of Jesus, this book is more than a vivid retelling of the events of the Gospels. Jesus and the Law joins three other works by Watson-The Trial of Jesus, Jesus and the Jews, and Jesus: A Profile-to examine the early dynamism of western religion through refocused attention on biblical texts and other historical sources.
