Design for Living by Anonim Pdf

""Does Your House Fit You?" In 1949, the Community Arts Council of Vancouver posed this question in their catalogue for the seminal Design for Living exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, arguably marking the birth of Canada's West Coast Modernist tradition in art and architecture. Seventy years later, many of these modernist homes have been demolished for redevelopment, and yet many more have been renovated and preserved, reminders of the spirit of invention, experimentation, and enlightenment that characterized their original design. This catalogue, which accompanies an exhibition of the same name, presents eight case studies that represent a spectrum of modernist homes. Some are by well-known architects and designers, while others are by lesser-known builders, but all of which have been restored, updated, and adapted to the needs of contemporary family life, while remaining true to the modernist spirit in which they were originally created."--

The stark beauty of an iconic architectural movement is captured in this rare collection of stunning images. As an emerging photographer in the 1950s and '60s, Selwyn Pullan played an important role in popularizing the new style of West Coast modernist architecture. His photographs capturing Vancouver's rapidly changing urban landscape appeared regularly in magazines and architectural journals, and helped tout the bold, dramatic architectural ideas thriving on the West Coast. Pullan became known for his ability to contextualize the work of architects through unique composition and tonal range. He photographed projects for B.C.'s leading architects of the era, including Ron Thom, Fred Hollingsworth, C.E Pratt, Arthur Erickson and Barry Downs. Today, as Vancouver's architectural landscape changes again, his photographs are all that remain of many of these projects, now demolished or altered beyond recognition. An extensive retrospective with beautifully reproduced images, this book's illuminating texts also put the artist in historical and cultural context.

Copp House by Adele Weder Pdf

In 1950, a young Vancouver architectural apprentice was handed a small house project that his boss was too busy to take on. The apprentice, Ron Thom, took the simple plan and rectangular foundation that had been roughed in, and transformed it into a groundbreaking work of architecture that gained national fame. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra, but using local wood and paying careful attention to its verdant oceanside setting, Ron Thom created a landmark for the new architectural movement known as West Coast Modernism. The client, Dr. Harold Copp, was himself a trailblazer, the first head of the physiology department in the University of British Columbia's new Faculty of Medicine and a research pioneer. Generously illustrated with both vintage and contemporary architectural photography, line drawings, and photographs of the architect and residents, The Copp House is the story of a cultural landmark on the shores of Vancouver. AUTHOR: Adele Weder is an architectural writer, editor, curator and correspondent for publications across Canada and abroad. She is the author and co-author of several books and monographs on Canadian architecture, including B.C. Binning and Selwyn Pullan: Photographing Mid-Century West Coast Modernism. As well as co-curating several exhibitions with the Maison de l'Architecture du Quebec, she curated and coordinated the exhibition Ron Thom and the Allied Arts, which travelled to museums and galleries across Canada during 2013-2015. Houses Made of Wood and Light by Michele Dunkerley Pdf

American architect Hank Schubart was regarded as a genius for finding the perfect site for a house and for integrating its design into the natural setting, so that his houses appear to be as native to the forest around them as the trees and rocks. Salt Spring Island, one of the Gulf Islands in British Columbia, Canada, offered him a place to create the kind of architecture that responded to its surroundings, and Schubart-designed homes populate the island. Built of wood and glass, suffused with light, and oriented to views, they display characteristic features: random-width cedar siding, exposed beams, rusticated stonework. Over time, Schubart’s homes on Salt Spring Island came to be considered uniquely Gulf Islands homes. This inviting book offers the first introduction to the life and architecture of West Coast modernist Henry A. Schubart, Jr. (1916–1998). While still in his teens, Schubart persuaded Frank Lloyd Wright to accept him as a Taliesin Fellow, and his year’s apprenticeship in the master’s workshop taught him principles of designing in harmony with nature that he explored throughout the rest of his life. Michele Dunkerley traces Schubart’s career from his early practice in San Francisco at the noted firm Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons, to his successful firm with Howard Friedman, to his most lasting professional achievements on Salt Spring Island, where he became the de facto community architect, designing more than 230 residential, commercial, educational, and religious projects. Drawing lessons from his mentors over his decades on the island, he forged an everyday architecture with his mastery of detail and inventiveness. In doing so, he helped define how the island could grow without losing its soul. Color photographs and site plans display Schubart’s remarkable homes and other commissions.

Smith House II by Michael Prokopow Pdf

Over the course of his distinguished career, architect Arthur Erickson (1924-2009) designed numerous houses, each an exercise in transforming the needs of his clients into tangible form in the context of site and place. Artists Gordon Smith (1919-) and Marion Smith (1918-2009) of Vancouver were the only Erickson clients to commission him to design two homes. The first (1955) was a straightforward exercise in post-World War II modernism that represented the transplantation of prevailing North American design thinking to the mountainous rain forests of coastal Vancouver. The second house (1966) - Smith House II as it came to be known - likewise situated in a forest but with the added benefit of ocean and island vistas, was simultaneously a deft reworking of the stylistic and spatial culture of the first house and a remarkable, path-breaking study in cultural transposition, interpretation and adaptation. Emphasizing its disavowal of conventional demarcations of space and the movement within and through it, it translated the material and aesthetic sensibilities of 17th century Japanese domestic architecture to the circumstances of mid-20th century North America (and the northerly Pacific coast).

Reside: West Coast Architectural Responses by Dr Michael J Prokopow,Michael Prokopow Pdf

Stunning contemporary houses illuminate the enduring and evolving influence of the West Coast Modern architectural style in B.C. Decades after gaining international recognition through the work of practitioners such as Arthur Erickson, Ron Thom, and Barry Downs, the West Coast Modern style remains widely celebrated and highly influential for residential architects in British Columbia and beyond, even as its expressions evolve and adapt to contemporary contexts. What are the contours of its legacy today--and has a new Cascadia regional style emerged? To explore these questions, Clinton Cuddington, co-principal of Measured Architecture, invited dozens of B.C.-based architects to share residential projects that best exemplified their design process. Their responses range from palatial mountain chalets to cabins sitting lightly in the forest to oceanfront retreats to sensitive urban renovations. Each house is presented through full-colour photos by professional photographers including Andrew Latreille and Ema Peter, and accompanied by short essays by curator and critic Michael Prokopow that draw on visits to each house and interviews with the architects to elucidate the many aesthetic and programmatic accomplishments on display. The houses are grouped by typology within Mountain, Forest, Shore, and City sections, and followed by profiles of each firm with photos of additional work. As Prokopow details in an incisive essay, each house is necessarily also a response to the conditions of its creation, notably its site--locations include the Sea-to-Sky Region, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, Southern Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the West Kootenays--as well as its social and cultural context, and so is revealing of modern ideas about home and family, leisure and vocation, ecological concerns and communion with nature on Canada's West Coast. With thoughtful, deeply informed prose and over 300 considered photos, Reside is an absorbing and inspiring tour of some of the most exceptional houses in the country, and a portrait of how the unique character of the region is expressed in built form.

The Perfect $100,000 House by Karrie Jacobs Pdf

A home of one’s own has always been a cornerstone of the American dream, fulfilling like nothing else the desire for comfort, financial security, independence, and with a little luck, even a touch of distinctive character, or even beauty. But what we have come to regard as almost a national birthright has recently begun to elude more and more prospective homebuyers. Where housing is concerned, affordable and well-crafted rarely exist together. Or do they? For years, founding editor-in-chief of Dwell magazine and noted architecture and design critic Karrie Jacobs had been confronting this question both professionally and personally. Finally, she decided to see for herself whether it was possible to build the home of her own dreams for a reasonable sum. The Perfect $100,000 House is the story of that quest, a search that takes her from a two-week crash course in housebuilding in Vermont to a road trip of some 14,000 miles. In the course of her journey Jacobs encounters a group of intrepid and visionary architects and builders working to revolutionize the way Americans thinks about homes, about construction techniques, and about the very idea of community. By her trip’s end Jacobs, has not only had a practical and sobering education in the economics, aesthetics, and politics of homebuilding, but has been spurred to challenge her own deeply held beliefs about what constitutes an ideal home. The Perfect $100,000 House is a compelling and inspiring demonstration that we can live in homes that are sensible, modest, and beautiful.
