The Wind and Beyond: A Documentary Journey Into the History of Aerodynamics in America, V. 2 by James R. Hansen,National Aeronautics and Space Administration Pdf

The airplane ranks as one of history's most ingenious and phenomenal inventions. It has surely been one of the most world changing. How ideas about aerodynamics first came together and how the science and technology evolved to forge the airplane into the revolutionary machine that it became is the epic story told in this six-volume series, The Wind and Beyond: A Documentary Journey through the History of Aerodynamics in America. Following up on Volume I's account of the invention of the airplane and the creation of the original aeronautical research establishment in the United States, Volume II explores the airplane design revolution of the 1920s and 1930s and the quest for improved airfoils. Subsequent volumes cover the aerodynamics of airships, flying boats, rotary-wing aircraft, breaking the sound barrier, and more.

The Wind and Beyond: Theodore von Kármán, Pioneer in Aviation and Pathfinder in Space by Theodore von Kármán,Lee Edson Pdf

“[A]n autobiography that, happily, is an engrossing, full-bodied reflection of the man, a neatly balanced combination of technical insights and always pertinent, often irreverent anecdotes... an upbeat tale of a man who had a great love of life and a well-merited sense of achievement, told with genuine gusto and fascinating detail.” — Richard Witkin, The New York Times “It is the triumph of this book that it manages to combine a chatty, anecdotal, and highly readable tale of a distinguished scientist’s everyday life with a substantial number of penetrating insights into the creative process.” — I. B. Holley, Jr., Science “The present biography is eminently readable, sometimes puckish, and von Karman himself is rather inspiring in his faith in science.” — Kirkus “Every paragraph grips the reader’s attention... a book almost impossible to put down until it is read.” — Aerospace Historian “This account of von Kármán’s life and his contributions to the science of aerodynamics is most fascinating reading.” — The Science Teacher “Every page of this superb classic is infused with von Karman’s humanity. As his narrative makes clear, he was not simply a clever technician but a man of character whose vision advanced the aerospace sciences and fostered international cooperation.” — Aviation History

Beyond the Wind Chimes by Phyllis Adair Ward Pdf

I can sit for hours over a cup of tea and talk to Phyllis about almost any topic. She is such a great storyteller, and there is always a lesson to be learned. Phylliss new book is so much like her personality, full of mirth, a history lesson, nurturing words, and a brief glimpse into a remarkable mind. The story of Fifty-Four made me smile and remember what I was thinking at that age and what I could expect to come to mind as I move into my next phase of life (Dr. Joye M. Carter, author of My Strength Comes from Within: An Autobiography; I Speak for the Dead; and Let Me Give You a Peace of My Mind). Beyond the Wind Chimes is a poignant collection of short stories written by the talented Phyllis Adair Ward, author of Wind Chimes and Promises. I found myself wiping a tear or two or simply scratching my head. The stories are whimsical, thought-provoking, and a very easy read. It is a must read accompanied by a cup of coffee or tea (Beatrice Toney Bailey, author of Farewell, My Friend). If you love Phyllis, you will love this book. If you dont know Phyllis, read it, and your heart will be touched. She has written poems, stories, essays, and commentaries infused with warmth and connection. Meet Miss Lorraine and Dr. Adams if you want a heart-warmer. Meet mothers and grandmothers, cousins, aunts, and uncles. You will find humor, kindness, and tragedy, along with gratitude for the miracles of living. Here is a fine model for aging gracefully with only a few complaints. Phyllis succeeds in her goal for this book, I want to write acceptable or unacceptable words. I want to empty out my heart and soul on paper. Thats my gift to the world. The only one I really have. She gives abundantly. (Linda Caldwell Lee, author of Mystics, Me and Moby: A Spiritual Road Trip and What Happiness Required).

Beyond the Planet of the Wind by Paolo Aresi Pdf

Fantascienza - novel (186 pagine) - An incredible journey through the interstellar space mysteries. Winner of Urania Award 2004 From Mars to the stars: this is the mission of the starship Leonardo da Vinci. Planet after planet, wonders and mysteries came along to reveal a superior design: from a bare world, where powerful winds modeled the rocks into spooky spears and pinnacles, to a planet where hidden artefacts point to other worlds; and to Ambra, the planet with a huge, gigantic marble stairway half a mile wide, ten miles long, six miles high. An invitation to climb it, but with a rule: you can do it only on foot. “I enjoyed Beyond the planet of the wind a lot – it’s a very interesting and intelligent book, with great speculation about deep time and the future of the cosmos” – Alastair Reynolds From one on the best Italian science fiction authors, the Urania Award winning novel that anticipated Interstellar. Paolo Aresi was born in Bergamo, Italy, in 1958. He graduated in Arts and works as a journalist with L’Eco di Bergamo newspaper. He published his first science fiction novel Oberon, l’avamposto fra i ghiacci (“Oberon the Outpost in the Ice”) in 1987. In 1992 he won the Courmayeur Award with the short story Stige. In 1995 he published Toshi si sveglia nel cuore della notte (“Toshi Wakes Up in the Middle of the Night”), a crime novel. In 2004 he won the Urania Award with Oltre il pianeta del vento (Beyond The Planet of the Wind) In the novel Ho pedalato fino alle stelle (2008) he told about his passion for bycicles. A new science fiction novel, the post-apocalyptic L’amore al tempo dei treni perduti (“Love in the Times of Lost Trains”) was published in 2010, and in 2011 Mondadori published Korolev, a tribute to the Chief Designer of the Russian space program.

The Wind and Beyond is an award-winning reference work, drawing together the historical documents that spell out the advancements in aviation technology and aerodynamics throughout the twentieth century.

The Wind and Beyond: a Documentary Journey Into the History of Aerodynamics in America Volume 1: the Ascent of the Airplane by James Hansen Pdf

This first volume, plus the succeeding five now in preparation, covers the impact of aerodynamic development on the evolution of the airplane in America. As the six-volume series will ultimately demonstrate, just as the airplane is a defining technology of the twentieth century, aerodynamics has been the defining element of the airplane. Volumes two through six will proceed in roughly chronological order, covering such developments as the biplane, the advent of commercial airliners, flying boats, rotary aircraft, supersonic flight, and hypersonic flight. This series is designed as an aeronautics companion to the Exploring the Unknown: Selected Documents in the History of the U.S. Civil Space Program (NASA SP-4407) series of books. As with Exploring the Unknown, the documents collected during this research project were assembled from a diverse number of public and private sources. A major repository of primary source materials relative to the history of the civil space program is the NASA Historical Reference Collection in the NASA Headquarters History Office. Historical materials housed at NASA field centers, academic institutions, and Presidential libraries were other sources of documents considered for inclusion, as were papers in the archives of private individuals and corporations.
