World Foods with Strange Names by Dr. Ian Grierson Pdf

If you have that travel bug thing in your system and that is combined with my being a compulsive foodie for most of my life then you have someone with an obsessive interest in International cuisines. I knew many of our dishes in these Islands have weird names but the more I travelled, each country I visited or neighbouring countries had a scattering of curiously or contradictory named dishes. It became almost a hobby of mine to hunt them out to study their recipes, their histories or at least explore how they got their strange names. We may have in England foods like “sweetbreads” but in Italy there is “Jump in the Mouth”, Iran has its “Water Meat”, China “Ants Climbing a Tree” or in the US you might enjoy “Poor Boy with Debris”. I have made a number of them at home, eaten many more in restaurants or as street food but some I have never had only read about. There are no recipes as such in my book only some words about strangely named foods from around the Globe I hope you find interesting.

They Eat That? by Jonathan Deutsch,Natalya Murakhver Pdf

This thoroughly engaging encyclopedia considers the rich diversity of unfamiliar foods eaten around the world. The title They Eat That?: A Cultural Encyclopedia of Weird and Exotic Food from around the World says it all. This fun encyclopedia, organized A–Z, describes and offers cultural context for foodstuffs people eat today that might be described as "weird"—at least to the American palate. Entries also include American regional standards, such as scrapple and chitterlings, that other regions might find distasteful, as well as a few mainstream American foods, like honey, that are equally odd when one considers their derivation. A long narrative entry on insects, for example, discusses the fact that insects are enjoyed as a regular part of the diet in some Asian, South and Central American, and African countries. It then looks at the kinds of insects eaten, where and how they are eaten, cultural uses, nutrition, and preparation. Each of the encyclopedia's 100 entries includes a representative recipe or, for a food already prepared like maggoty cheese, describes how it is eaten. Each entry ends with suggested readings.

The Strange World of Man by Gregory Stephen Pdf

The Strange World of Man is that rarest of things, a book that, more than entertain or even inform, challenges us to think about the world, examine our history and ourselves. Though first and foremost a spiritual guide, this is no New Age primer, no self-help guide in the conventional sense. Partly an analysis of belief systems, world events, religion and politics, part esoteric philosophy, it covers a lot of ground. Author Greg Stephen is an uncompromising writer with a very different take on the dominant experiences of 20th/21st century man. Peering beneath the veil of spin and subterfuge, bent on exploding myths at every turn, Stephen ultimately calls into question the very premises that underlie social order, our view of humanity and ultimately of life and death. A compelling, sometimes extraordinary read, engrossing and confounding in equal measure, ultimately disturbing in its implications, The Strange World of Man shows us to be a complacent lot. Highly recommended.
