Thelma's Diary 1935 by Thelma F. Dyke,Joyce M. Wiedie Pdf

Thelmas journal begins shortly after she asked her sisters to join her on an adventure around the world. While Marge agreed to accompany her, Ula declined for reasons unknown. Thelma and Marge left Akron, Ohio, in May 1935. The places theyd only read about were soon to become real-life adventures. The breathtaking views of the Grand Canyon and Mount Wilson were some of the riches they encountered on their way to the Dollar Steamship Lines in Los Angeles, where their cruise originated. Their first port of call was Honolulu. So taken by its beauty and tranquility, Thelma and Marge vowed to return. In Italy, they had a private audience with Pope Pius XI in Castel Gandolfo, his summer home outside Rome. Although Joyce wrote parts of this book, Thelmas diary is in her own words. Youll read about the events she witnessed and then wrote about each day, an uncensored depiction of two sisters out to explore and experience life. Joyces wish to preserve family history compelled her to share this memoir. It shows Joyces affection for the Dyke sisters and is a fitting tribute to their extraordinary lives.

Such a Life by Joseph C. Huber Jr. Pdf

this is the story, in her own words, of an adventurous young woman. Coming from divorced grandparents and parents, she struck out from Akron, Ohio, after high school, modeling shoes in St. Louis and performing in a show on a boat on the Ohio River. She found love at twenty-one and, just after turning twenty-two, married in time to leave Ohio to venture with her husband, raised on an Ohio farm, into the jungles of Sumatra. She went around the world, raised a family in the Philippines, and succeeded against great odds in keeping her family alive in Japanese prison camps during World War II. A strong woman, she demonstrated management capability and great social skills with people at all levels. With only a high school education, she homeschooled her three children, each of whom earned two degrees from well-known universities. Near the end, she used her excellent storytelling skills to dictate her entertaining, humorous, and unselfconscious story to a young neighbor girl. Her son has added family and newspaper photos and provided a setting for her story. The book takes us back to the time of weeks-long ocean voyages on large ships across the Pacific Ocean, face-to-face socializing before social media, and when a college degree was not considered a necessity for success-a time that enchants and instructs.

A Life Wild and Perilous by Robert M. Utley Pdf

Early in the nineteenth century, the mountain men emerged as a small but distinctive group whose knowledge and experience of the trans-Mississippi West extended the national consciousness to continental dimensions. Though Lewis and Clark blazed a narrow corridor of geographical reality, the West remained largely terra incognita until trappers and traders--Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Tom Fitzpatrick, Jedediah Smith--opened paths through the snow-choked mountain wilderness. They opened the way west to Fremont and played a major role in the pivotal years of 1845-1848 when Texas was annexed, the Oregon question was decided, and the Mexican War ended with the Southwest and California in American hands, the Pacific Ocean becoming our western boundary.

Mary's Diary by Mary McIntosh Pdf

Mary McIntosh revisits her diary for the years 1935-1939. This is Volume One which covers 1935. The other four volumes will be available soon as separate books. In Volume One Mary recalls listening to Mary Pickford and Rudy Vallee on the radio, seeing Shirley Temple in "The Little Colonel" at the newly opened Radio City Music Hall, hearing of the crash and death of Will Rogers and Wiley Post, and the assassination of Huey Long. She also remembers Roosevelt's announcement of a "bank holiday" and the loss of the $1.35 in her Christmas Club account. Over the five volumes she describes the abdication of the English King, the fiery disaster of the Hindenburg, romantic rides in a rumble seat, visits to England on a steam ship, her first sexual encounters with a lover, and hundreds of other episodes brought back to her 90 year old mind in clear and vivid detail from the diary entries she made so long ago. Not every memory is bright and pleasant. The great depression lay over the land and there was much suffering and unrest. Too, her authoritarian father's shocking manner of explaining sex to her caused much anxiety and clouded her life long after her father's death when she was herself married with children of her own. But despite those clouds in the background,, Mary's teenage years come through as brightly and vividly as sunshine after a storm. She describes a long ago time of small pleasures and enormous excitement you will enjoy sharing. So take a peek into her 1935 Diary and drift back into a slower and simpler time. It will soothe your soul and enliven your mind. And it will also sharpen your appetite for more. So look for the next four volumes. They'll be available soon. Or, dip into the Kindle versions of the books available now on Amazon.

Appeasement by Tim Bouverie Pdf

A NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • SUNDAY TIMES (UK) BESTSELLER • A gripping new history of the British appeasement of Hitler on the eve of World War II “An eye-opening narrative that makes for exciting but at times uncomfortable reading as one reflects on possible lessons for the present.”—Antonia Fraser, author of Mary Queen of Scots On a wet afternoon in September 1938, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain stepped off an airplane and announced that his visit to Hitler had averted the greatest crisis in recent memory. It was, he later assured the crowd in Downing Street, "peace for our time." Less than a year later, Germany invaded Poland and the Second World War began. Appeasement is a groundbreaking history of the disastrous years of indecision, failed diplomacy and parliamentary infighting that enabled Hitler's domination of Europe. Drawing on deep archival research and sources not previously seen by historians, Tim Bouverie has created an unforgettable portrait of the ministers, aristocrats, and amateur diplomats who, through their actions and inaction, shaped their country's policy and determined the fate of Europe. Beginning with the advent of Hitler in 1933, we embark on a fascinating journey from the early days of the Third Reich to the beaches of Dunkirk. Bouverie takes us not only into the backrooms of Parliament and 10 Downing Street but also into the drawing rooms and dining clubs of fading imperial Britain, where Hitler enjoyed surprising support among the ruling class and even some members of the royal family. Both sweeping and intimate, Appeasement is not only an eye-opening history but a timeless lesson on the challenges of standing up to aggression and authoritarianism--and the calamity that results from failing to do so.

After Lewis and Clark by Robert M. Utley Pdf

In 1807, a year after Lewis and Clark returned from the shores of the Pacific, groups of trappers and hunters began to drift West to tap the rich stocks of beaver and to trade with the Native nations. Colorful and eccentric, bold and adventurous, mountain men such as John Colter, George Drouillard, Hugh Glass, Andrew Henry, and Kit Carson found individual freedom and financial reward in pursuit of pelts. Their knowledge of the country and its inhabitants served the first mapmakers, the army, and the streams of emigrants moving West in ever-greater numbers. The mountain men laid the foundations for their own displacement, as they led the nation on a westward course that ultimately spread the American lands from sea to sea.

Thomas Varker Keam by Laura Graves Pdf

Thomas Varker Keam owned and operated a trading post in Keams Canyon, Arizona Territory, from 1874 to 1902. He was the first trader to develop American Indian arts and crafts as part of his business and the first to suggest that Native artists modify their techniques to increase sales. Keam had a major impact on the evolution of Hopi pottery. Involved in early archaeological work in the Southwest, Keam was the first trader to develop lucrative contacts with museum curators and anthropologists. He sold enormous collections to the Smithsonian Institution, the Field Museum, and the Peabody Museum, as well as several European institutions. An advocate for the Indians, Keam represented the Hopis and Navajos in confrontations with the U.S. government over “civilizing” programs between 1869 and 1902, when the Indians tried to maintain their political and cultural independence. Thomas Varker Keam revised Indian trading so that he and American Indian artists profited.

A Newer World by David Roberts Pdf

In A Newer World, David Roberts serves as a guide through John C. Frémont's and Kit Carson's adventures through unknown American territory to achieve manifest destiny. Between 1842 and 1854 John C. Frémont, renowned as the nineteenth century's greatest explorer, and Kit Carson, the legendary scout and Indian fighter, boldly ventured into untamed territory to fulfill America's "manifest destiny." Drawing on little-known primary sources, as well as his own travels through the lands Frémont and Carson explored, David Roberts recreates their expeditions, second in significance only to those of Lewis and Clark. A Newer World is a harrowing narrative of hardship and adventure and a poignant reminder of the cultural tragedy that westward expansion inflicted on the Native American.
