Thematic Preaching by Jane Rzepka,Kenneth Sawyer Pdf

This basic text focuses on "preaching as ministry", that is, preaching from themes and topics that minister to the congregation, in contrast to the more traditional sermons that spring from a biblical text. The book begins with a section on practical aspects of sermon preparation and delivery, then offers specific ways sermons become ministry. Four illustrative sermons are included.

Thematic Preaching by David C. Green Pdf

Thematic Preaching is a system of homiletics that emphasizes developing a sermon around its theme. It uses a specific method and scientific approach to do so while stressing such principles as parallelism, simplicity, consistency, logic and coherence. Its goal is to either create (with respect to a topical sermon) or ascertain (with respect to textual and expository sermons) the proper theme that is then steadfastly adhered to in each and every point of the sermon body. Its goal is to instruct the reader how to formulate an outline that is coherent, well organized, and that possesses purpose. Thematic Preaching is not an exhaustive treatise on all aspects of sermon preparation but concentrates instead on the primary goal of creating sermonic outlines. It does, however, cover such important topics as the spiritual dynamic as well as the introduction and conclusion of a message. This author trusts that after the reader has studied Thematic Preaching that he will be equipped to deliver purposeful, biblical messages that bring honor and glory and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Lastly, this author takes no credit in formulating this system of homiletics but is simply rehearsing what he has been taught at the Practical Bible Training School (now Davis College). He is deeply indebted to that school and those men who passed their wisdom and experience down to him.

Preaching the Whole Bible as Christian Scripture by Graeme Goldsworthy Pdf

While strong, gospel-centered preaching abounds, many Christian pastors and lay preachers find it difficult to preach meaningfully from the Old Testament. This practical handbook offers help. Graeme Goldsworthy teaches the basics of preaching the whole Bible in a consistently Christ-centered way. Goldsworthy first examines the Bible, biblical theology, and preaching and shows how they relate in the preparation of Christ-centered sermons. He then applies the biblical-theological method to the various types of literature found in the Bible, drawing out their contributions to expository preaching focused on the person and work of Christ. Clear, complete, and immediately applicable, this volume will become a fundamental text for teachers, pastors, and students preparing for ministry.

A History of Preaching Volume 1 by Rev. O.C. Edwards JR. Pdf

A History of Preaching brings together narrative history and primary sources to provide the most comprehensive guide available to the story of the church's ministry of proclamation. Bringing together an impressive array of familiar and lesser-known figures, Edwards paints a detailed, compelling picture of what it has meant to preach the gospel. Pastors, scholars, and students of homiletics will find here many opportunities to enrich their understanding and practice of preaching. Volume 1 contains Edwards's magisterial retelling of the story of Christian preaching's development from its Hellenistic and Jewish roots in the New Testament, through the late-twentieth century's discontent with outdated forms and emphasis on new modes of preaching such as narrative. Along the way the author introduces us to the complexities and contributions of preachers, both with whom we are already acquainted, and to whom we will be introduced here for the first time. Origen, Chrysostom, Augustine, Bernard, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Edwards, Rauschenbusch, Barth; all of their distinctive contributions receive careful attention. Yet lesser-known figures and developments also appear, from the ninth-century reform of preaching championed by Hrabanus Maurus, to the reference books developed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries by the mendicant orders to assist their members' preaching, to Howell Harris and Daniel Rowlands, preachers of the eighteenth-century Welsh revival, to Helen Kenyon, speaking as a layperson at the 1950 Yale Beecher lectures about the view of preaching from the pew. Volume 2, available separately as 9781501833786, contains primary source material on preaching drawn from the entire scope of the church's twenty centuries. The author has written an introduction to each selection, placing it in its historical context and pointing to its particular contribution. Each chapter in Volume 2 is geared to its companion chapter in Volume 1's narrative history. Ecumenical in scope, fair-minded in presentation, appreciative of the contributions that all the branches of the church have made to the story of what it means to develop, deliver, and listen to a sermon, A History of Preaching will be the definitive resource for anyone who wishes to preach or to understand preaching's role in living out the gospel. "...'This work is expected to be the standard text on preaching for the next 30 years,' says Ann K. Riggs, who staffs the NCC's Faith and Order Commission. Author Edwards, former professor of preaching at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, is co-moderator of the commission, which studies church-uniting and church-dividing issues. 'A History of Preaching is ecumenical in scope and will be relevant in all our churches; we all participate in this field,' says Riggs...." from EcuLink, Number 65, Winter 2004-2005 published by the National Council of Churches

Bases of the Preaching by Marcos A. Toyens Pdf

The contemporary evangelical church faces serious difficulties. All their leaders are aware of this and they try different diagnoses and answers for it. It occurs to me that the current situation is similar to the tragic fate of Samson, to whom the Spirit of God had left him, and he did not realize it. As solutions are sought in human and pragmatic techniques, the patient aggravates their condition. The only correct answer is that this vanishing life be breathed in, as at the beginning of creation, by the Word of God. The spiritual life of the church and of ourselves depends on listening to and responding to the Word of God. And for this to happen, Scripture must take the central and authoritative position in the life of the church.

Preaching God's Grand Drama by Ahmi Lee Pdf

How can preachers preach biblically faithful sermons that move listeners to positive action? An author on the cutting edge of contemporary homiletics and theology offers a fresh approach to preaching that helps listeners see themselves as actors in God's grand drama. Ahmi Lee presents a unifying "third way" in homiletical approaches (i.e., theodramatic) that reimagines the preacher's role in relation to the Bible, the congregation, and the world. The book not only helps students understand various preaching models but also is relevant to working preachers who want to critique and improve their approach. Foreword by Mark Labberton.

A Legacy of Preaching: Two-Volume Set---Apostles to the Present Day by Zondervan, Pdf

A Legacy of Preaching, Two-Volume Set--Apostles to the Present Day explores the history and development of preaching through a biographical and theological examination of its most important preachers. Instead of teaching the history of preaching from the perspective of movements and eras, each contributor tells the story of a particular preacher in history, allowing these preachers from the past to come alive and instruct us through their lives, theologies, and methods of preaching. Each chapter introduces readers to a key figure in the history of preaching, followed by an analysis of the theological views that shaped their preaching, their methodology of sermon preparation and delivery, and an appraisal of the significant contributions they have made to the history of preaching. This diverse collection of familiar and lesser-known individuals provides a detailed and fascinating look at what it has meant to communicate the gospel over the past two thousand years. By looking at how the gospel has been communicated over time and across different cultures, pastors, scholars, and homiletics students can enrich their own understanding and practice of preaching for application today. Volume One covers the period from the apostles to the Puritans and profiles thirty preachers including: Origen of Alexandria by Stephen O. Presley John Chrysostom by Paul A. Preacher, Sermon and Audience in the Middle Ages by Anonim Pdf

Preacher, Sermon and Audience in the Middle Ages presents research by specialists of preaching history and literature. This volume fills some of the lacunae which exists in medieval sermon studies. The topics include: an analysis of how oral and written cultures meet in sermon literature, the function of vernacular sermons, an examination of the usefulness of non-sermon sources such as art in the study of preaching history, sermon genres, the significance of heretical preaching, audience composition and its influence on sermon content, and the use of rhetoric in sermon construction. The study looks at preaching history and literature from a wide geographical and chronological area which includes examples from Anglo-Saxon England to late medieval Italy. While doing so, it outlines the state of sermon studies research and points to new areas of investigation.
