Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Chirurgical Pharmacy: Comprehending a Complete Dispensatory for the Use of Surgeons As there is no part of medicinal practice, that is of more importance to mankind, than surgery, the attainable means being more certainly effectual to the end, than in any other branch; so there is none in which the aids to the acquiring a due knowledge of the principles of the art as far as regards the choice and preparation of the medicaments, are more slender and defective. A great multiplicity of books, that treat of the preparation and composition of remedies for the cure of topical disorders, are it must be allowed already extant: of which many also, comment vaguely on the particular virtues of the remedies: but none of them contain so complete a collection of the forms, adopted by the present improved practice, as not to leave room for very useful additions: and they have failed much more, to explain analytically in any just manner, the rationale of such preparation or composition; or of the application of the medicaments to the purposes for which they are intended.
