This volume contains the proceedings of the Eighth Taniguchi Interna tional Symposium on the Theory of Condensed Matter, which was held at Shima Kanko Hotel in Shima, Japan, 10-13 April 1985. The topic of the Symposium was Valence Fluctuation and Heavy Fermion Systems, one of the most fundamental problems in present-day condensed matter physics. The dilute Kondo problem, which is one of the most typical and unique many-body problems in condensed matter physics, developed recently into the dense Kondo and the coherent Kondo lattice problems in the 4f elec tron systems. It is accepted now that a large degeneracy in f-electron systems makes this latter situation possible by enhancing the single-site Kondo state relative to the inter-site magnetic interactions. Now, anoma lous behavior in f-electron systems show rich variety and are called valence fluctuation phenomena as a whole. They have, however, a common fea ture. In the lowest temperature region, they show either heavy Fermion like character or a narrow gap formation at the Fermi energy. Discovery of superconductivity in the heavy Fermion systems is attracting more in terest. Anyway, the valence fluctuating states are thought to be of fun damental importance to bridge the gap between the localized magnetic states and the delocalized nownagnetic states.

As Kondo's perturbational calculations break down at low temperatures a non-perturbational approach is needed to predict the low temperature behaviour of the models, the so-called Kondo problem. The author surveys in some detail the many-body techniques, scaling, renormalization group, Fermi liquid and Bethe ansatz, which lead to a solution of this problem for most of the theoretical models. The book also deals with special techniques for N-fold degenerate models for rare earth impurities (including mean field and 1/N expansions). The theoretical framework having been established, a comparison is made between theoretical predictions and the experimental results on particular systems in the penultimate chapter. In this thesis, the author investigates hidden-order phase transition at T0 = 17.5 K in the heavy-fermion URu2Si2. The four-fold rotational symmetry breaking in the hidden order phase, which imposes a strong constraint on the theoretical model, is observed through the magnetic torque measurement. The translationally invariant phase with broken rotational symmetry is interpreted as meaning that the hidden-order phase is an electronic “nematic” phase. The observation of such nematicity in URu2Si2 indicates a ubiquitous nature among the strongly correlated electron systems. The author also studies the superconducting state of URu2Si2 below Tc = 1.4 K, which coexists with the hidden-order phase. A peculiar vortex penetration in the superconducting state is found, which may be related to the rotational symmetry breaking in the hidden-order phase. The author also identifies a vortex lattice melting transition. This transport study provides essential clues to the underlying issue of quasiparticle dynamics as to whether a quasiparticle Bloch state is realized in the periodic vortex lattice.
