A Leap Into the Future by Peter Anyang' Nyong'o Pdf

A Leap into the Future is a collection of speeches, essays and articles compiled during Prof. Anyang' Nyong'o's tenure in the Kenya government and soon afterwards (2002-2006). In this provocative collection, Prof. Nyong'o examines the challenges of development, analyses how pan-African and global partnerships could facilitate development, and invokes the visionary direction pointed out by prominent personalities in Kenya's political leadership to whom he pays tribute. Through the collection, the author projects his vision for socio-political and economic transformation of the Kenyan society in a bid to formulate an economic strategy capable of leap-frogging the country from the current quagmire of underdevelopment to development. Professor Anyang' Nyong'o is a renowned reformist and political scientist in Africa and is best known for his role in Kenya's "second liberation." He holds a doctorate degree in Political Science from the University of Chicago and has taught in universities in Kenya, Mexico and Ethiopia. Upon the re-introduction of multiparty politics in Kenya in 1991, he was involved in the founding of Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD), which provided the premier opposition machinery in the run-up to the 1992 general elections. He was also involved in the formation of the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), which defeated KANU, the party that had ruled Kenya for 24 years. In the subsequent NARC government, he became the Minister of Planning and National Development. Besides teaching, he is widely published in Africa and abroad. Prof. Nyong'o has also been at the frontline in championing the reform agenda in Africa, especially through the establishment of NEPAD. At the time of publication of this book, he was Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

The Palgrave Handbook of African Men and Masculinities by Ezra Chitando Pdf

This handbook provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of key theoretical and analytical approaches, topics and debates in contemporary scholarship on African masculinities. Refusing to privilege Western theoretical constructs (but remaining in dialogue with them), contributors explore the contestations around and diversities within men, masculinities and sexualities in Africa; investigate individual and collective practices of masculinity; and interrogate the social construction of masculinities. Bringing together insights from scholars across gender studies, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, history, literature and religion, this book demonstrates how recognizing and upholding the integrity of African phenomena, locating and reflecting on men and masculinities in varied African contexts and drawing new theoretical frameworks all combine to take the discourse on men and masculinities in Africa forward. Chapters examine a range of issues within the context of masculinities, including embodiment, sport, violence, militarism, spirituality, gender roles, fatherhood, homosexuality, health and work. This handbook will be valuable reading for scholars, researchers, and policymakers in Gender Studies (particularly Masculinity Studies) and Africana Studies.

Fan into Flame by Gatu, John G. Pdf

From an early age, John Gatũ yearns for and cherishes his independence. At the end of his primary school education, instead of joining a teacher training college, young Gatũ opts to travel to Nairobi, believing a better world awaited him there. Much later, after scratching hard, he discovers this ‘better’ world when he joins the army. Serving in Ethiopia and Somaliland, and finally travelling to London for the Victory Parade, thrills young Gatũ despite the dangers involved. It is at the peak of his career in the military and after receiving the most coveted awards that John Gatũ makes another decision: to retire from the army and work closer home. Gatũ, the civilian, engages in different jobs before working as a clerk at Kambui Mission Church. “It had nothing to do with my Christian faith … it was purely for the salary and my desire to work and live near my family,” he confesses. It was during his service at Kambũi that he encountered the ‘flame’ that continues to burn in him as he allows himself to be used to transform others. Fan into Flame is a multi-layered narrative with the nuances of a thriller as the author unveils dramatic events that took place when he was a soldier in Ethiopia and the serenity that he encounters after his ‘rebirth’. The story spans through the history of colonial and independent Kenya. Rev. John Gatũ’s passion for his work as a servant of God, brings out the best in everyone he interacts with, no matter what their station in life. His role as an agent of peace and positive change in the church, his country and beyond, cannot be overemphasised. The Very Rev. Dr John G. Gatũ is the first African Secretary General of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) and was Moderator of the 9th & 10th General Assembly of the Church. He is well known in the theological circles for his call in the early 1970’s for a Moratorium on Missionaries and foreign personnel to churches in the developing world, and a great African ecumenist. He lives in his farm in Karen on the outskirts of the city of Nairobi and continues to write and advise the Church.

Kenya the Beloved by J. M. Ombati Simon Pdf

Kenya the Beloved is a book written with love. The book is about one man's love for his country, Kenya. It is about his vision and desire to see justice, peace and freedom in his country. In this book, the author, (Job Ombati) tries to remind his fellow countrymen where they have come from. He tries to tell a story of their conquest of injustice and their development and progress that they made since independence. As he takes you from the The Day Before', he shows you how peaceful the country was before the arrival of the colonialist. The book describes well how Kenyan people fought the colonialist and won their freedom. It tells who was who and how they participated in the struggle. Kenya The Beloved tells how white men came to Kenya as missionaries (Visitors) and turned to be colonialists. It tells how hospitable Kenyans were to have welcomed the Visitors, without knowing their hidden agenda. After realizing that the Visitors had ill-motives, the Africans united against him and started a revolt. This revolt did not take one face, as many might think. It took different people with different approaches to dismantle colonialism completely from Kenya. This is an important point that the book raises because many other books have been written pointing to only one movement called Mau-mau as being the only revolt that was used to oust colonialists. Kenya the Beloved says that that is not entirely true. The book also tells what was at stake and why the Africans of Kenya had to fight. In wildlife, the book tells that animals in Kenya were plenty and beautiful before and after the colonialists. He then tells how even these animals fought for freedom like every other Kenyan. The book illustrates how well and peaceful the country was before December 27, 2007 when it says things fell apart'. Job does not leave you there stranded as to what to do next, he gives you hope. Job tells how things can be turned around for the better of all the people. He says that even though things have gone terribly wrong, people can still rise and mend fences for the future generation. Above all, this book is an historical account, of some events and freedom struggle for the people of Kenya. This is a book of hope. It is a book that tells vividly the way some people think and the practical way of solving our many problems in the world. Reading this book raises one's hope and inspires action for the common good of all humanity. Job Ombati believes that if all men can think positive, if all men can start acting with love of one another, the world will be a better place for all to live in. It is with such kind of thinking that he wrote this small book, Kenya The Beloved. It will challenge and inspire you to the end.
