Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman Pdf

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “This is the most important book ever written about time management.” —Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again and host of WorkLife What if you stopped trying to do everything, so that you could finally get around to what counts? Nobody needs to be told there isn’t enough time. Whether we’re starting our own business, or trying to write a novel during our lunch break, or staring down a pile of deadlines as we’re planning a vacation, we’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and ceaseless struggle against distraction. We’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient and life hacks to optimize our days. Still, we rarely make the connection between our daily struggles with time and the ultimate time management problem: the question of how best to use our ridiculously brief time on the planet, which amounts on average to about four thousand weeks. Drawing on the insights of both ancient and contemporary philosophers, psychologists, and spiritual teachers, Oliver Burkeman delivers an entertaining, humorous, practical, and ultimately profound guide to time and time management. Rejecting the futile modern obsession with “getting everything done,” Four Thousand Weeks introduces readers to tools for constructing a meaningful life by embracing finitude, showing that many of the unhelpful ways we’ve come to think about time aren’t inescapable, unchanging truths, but choices we’ve made as individuals and as a society—and that we can do things differently. Embrace your limits. Change your life. Make your four thousand weeks count.

Sea Prayer by Khaled Hosseini Pdf

A Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller A deeply moving, gorgeously illustrated short story for people of all ages from the international bestselling author of The Kite Runner, brought to life by Dan Williams's beautiful illustrations 'The book may be brief, but it is beautiful, poetic – a distillation of his strengths' Sunday Times On a moonlit beach a father cradles his sleeping son as they wait for dawn to break and a boat to arrive. He speaks to his boy of the long summers of his childhood, recalling his grandfather's house in Syria, the stirring of olive trees in the breeze, the bleating of his grandmother's goat, the clanking of her cooking pots. And he remembers, too, the bustling city of Homs with its crowded lanes, its mosque and grand souk, in the days before the sky spat bombs and they had to flee. When the sun rises they and those around them will gather their possessions and embark on a perilous sea journey in search of a new home.

Top Secret by Dale Kiser Pdf

This is an intense love story wrapped up in CIA and KGB activities and intrigue. The two main characters, Mollie Sands and Jim Owens, have a long and stormy relationship over the eleven years. Mollie, an Alaskan woman who has to survive more hurt than most people ever expect to. Jim, a former Military Intelligence Officer and finally a CIA operative of much merit. After having hurt each other significantly several times the relationship falls apart for several years. During these years the two of them continue to work together. Jim has several relationships with other women during this time. Mollie has to contend with all that while still loving him. This is a detailed writing about the work they were involved in during the eleven years and all the hurts Mollie endured. It goes deeply into the thinking of some of the characters, revealing their weaknesses and fears as well as some of their strengths. One might ask why a woman would tolerate all that Mollied did and still keep her sanity? And why would she tolerate all the other things he did with other women and not completely dismiss him from her life? And why would she insist he tell her all the details of everything he did, knowing she would suffer tremendously? The amazing thing is that she seems to have kept her sanity while struggling mightly within herself. Happenings brought on by themselves, the KGB, and their own organization, the CIA. There is love; there are assassinations, much intrigue, loneliness, loss of several close friends as the CIA and the KGB battle each other. It is set in Alaska, but takes place in many parts of the world. It is very detailed and is a compelling story, one worthy of much psychological investigation and thought.

The Life and Thought of Friedrich Engels by Terrell Carver Pdf

Worldwide political changes since 1990 have driven a re-evaluation of Marxism, a renaissance in Marx-studies, and a renewed interest in his lifelong intellectual partner and personal friend Friedrich Engels. In Terrell Carver’s 30th anniversary edition of his pioneering biographical study of the ‘junior partner’ – which still remains the only one to balance Engels’s pre-Marx, with-Marx, and post-Marx writings, giving a rounded view of his life and thought – Carver adopts a comparative and critical approach, neither taking the ‘perfect partnership’ as a given, nor presuming that all the intellectual fireworks were Marx’s. Engels’s famously ‘bourgeois’ class position and ‘champagne socialist’ lifestyle emerge as resolutions rather than contradictions – they provided opportunities for activist writing and politicking that would not otherwise occur. This study is driven by questions that readers might like to ask about Engels, rather than by the sheer weight of archival materials and stereotypical framing. A newly written introduction provides reflections on how politics since the 1990s has brought Marx, Engels, and Marxisms back to life, and how publication of the Marx-Engels ‘collected works’ in a definitive edition, and in English translation, have promoted interpretive innovation. Engels himself did his best to establish his own biographical narrative. This book enables readers to assess that dominating view for themselves.
