Thoughts and Opinions of a Statesman (Classic Reprint) by Wilhelm Humboldt Pdf

Excerpt from Thoughts and Opinions of a Statesman Known in Europe to require that we should give any very detailed account of the writer, from whose letters to a friend the following extracts are taken. Wilhelm Von Humboldt, besides the fame which he has justly acquired as an oriental scholar, was employed largely by his monarch in diplomatic affairs: amongst the rest, he appeared as the envoy of Prussia at the Con gress of Vienna. A lady whom he had formerly known, whose fortune had suffered much from the events of the war of liberation, was induced on this occasion to apply to him for assistance in recovering her rights from the sovereigns there represented. His efforts were unsuccessful, but he endeavoured to alleviate her disappointment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Cicero's Ideal Statesman in Theory and Practice by Jonathan Zarecki Pdf

The resurgence of interest in Cicero's political philosophy in the last twenty years demands a re-evaluation of Cicero's ideal statesman and its relationship not only to Cicero's political theory but also to his practical politics. Jonathan Zarecki proposes three original arguments: firstly, that by the publication of his De Republica in 51 BC Cicero accepted that some sort of return to monarchy was inevitable. Secondly, that Cicero created his model of the ideal statesman as part of an attempt to reconcile the mixed constitution of Rome's past with his belief in the inevitable return of sole-person rule. Thirdly, that the ideal statesman was the primary construct against which Cicero viewed the political and military activities of Pompey, Caesar and Antony, and himself.

Thoughts and Opinions of a Statesman by Wilhelm Humboldt Pdf

Excerpt from Thoughts and Opinions of a Statesman first by pecuniary assistance, conveyed in the kindest manner, and then by supporting her courage under a life of toil and privations; for she honourably resolved to maintain herself by the labour of her own hands. He kept up a correspondence with her till his death, a. d. 1835. His grateful friend thought that the wisdom and kind feeling which had so often consoled her under her afflictions, might have a like comfort for others, and prepared the letters she had received from him for publication after her own death. They have just appeared. The Editors of the "Small Books" think they are doing their readers good service in introducing them to the thoughts and opinions, on many subjects, of this distinguished man. It is no recluse who here preaches from his closet the lessons of religion and virtue: it is the man of the world, - the statesman, - the diplomatist, - whom we find teaching and acting upon the precepts of Christianity. Never was religion shown in a more amiable light than in the outpourings of his benevolent, yet firm mind. Small Bodies of Water by Nina Mingya Powles Pdf

'Remarkable' Robert Macfarlane 'Gorgeous' Amy Liptrot 'Urgent and nourishing' Jessica J. Lee Nina Mingya Powles first learned to swim in Borneo – where her mother was born and her grandfather studied freshwater fish. There, the local swimming pool became her first body of water. Through her life there have been others that have meant different things, but have still been, in their own way, home: from the wild coastline of New Zealand to a pond in northwest London. In lyrical, powerful prose, Small Bodies of Water weaves together memories, dreams and nature writing. Exploring everything from migration, food, family, earthquakes and the ancient lunisolar calendar, Nina reflects on a girlhood spent growing up between two cultures, and what it means to belong.

Lincoln and Democratic Statesmanship by Michael P. Zuckert Pdf

Our ideas of statesmanship are fraught with seeming contradictions: The democratic statesman is true to the people’s wishes and views—but also capable of standing against popular opinion when necessary. The statesman rises above conflicts and seeks compromise between parties—but also stands firmly for what is right. Abraham Lincoln, perhaps more than any other political figure in US history, affords us an opportunity to evaluate the philosophical, political, and practical implications of these paradoxical propositions. Asking whether and how Lincoln acted in a statesmanly manner at critical moments, the authors of this volume aim to clarify what precisely statesmanship might be; their work illuminates important themes and events in Lincoln’s career even as it broadens and sharpens our understanding of the general nature of statesmanship. One of Lincoln’s abiding themes was foreshadowed in his Lyceum Address, delivered when he was not yet thirty: the call for the prevalence of a sort of public opinion that he characterized as a political religion. As it relates to democratic statesmanship, what does Lincoln’s political religion have to do with religion per se? How, in his role as statesman as a master of democratic speech, did Lincoln handle the two major issues he faced as a political leader: slavery and the war? In attempting to meet the demand that he use acceptable means to achieve his ends, did Lincoln—can any statesman—keep his hands clean? Are there inevitable transgressions that a statesman must commit? These are among the topics the authors take on as they consider Lincoln’s democratic and rhetorical statesmanship, on occasion drawing comparisons with his contemporaries Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas or even such a distant forerunner as Pericles. Finally, framing statesmanship in terms of three factors—knowledge of the political good of a community, circumstance, and the best possible action in light of these two—this volume renders a nuanced, deeply informed judgment on what distinguishes Lincoln as a statesman, and what distinguishes a statesman from a (mere) politician.

Foundations of the American Century by Inderjeet Parmar Pdf

Inderjeet Parmar reveals the complex interrelations, shared mindsets, and collaborative efforts of influential public and private organizations in the building of American hegemony. Focusing on the involvement of the Ford, Rockefeller, and Carnegie foundations in U.S. foreign affairs, Parmar traces the transformation of America from an "isolationist" nation into the world's only superpower, all in the name of benevolent stewardship. Parmar begins in the 1920s with the establishment of these foundations and their system of top-down, elitist, scientific giving, which focused more on managing social, political, and economic change than on solving modern society's structural problems. Consulting rare documents and other archival materials, he recounts how the American intellectuals, academics, and policy makers affiliated with these organizations institutionalized such elitism, which then bled into the machinery of U.S. foreign policy and became regarded as the essence of modernity. America hoped to replace Britain in the role of global hegemon and created the necessary political, ideological, military, and institutional capacity to do so, yet far from being objective, the Ford, Rockefeller, and Carnegie foundations often advanced U.S. interests at the expense of other nations. Incorporating case studies of American philanthropy in Nigeria, Chile, and Indonesia, Parmar boldly exposes the knowledge networks underwriting American dominance in the twentieth century.
