Through the Year by Horatio N. Powers Pdf

Excerpt from Through the Year The explanation of the existence of any religion is found in the nature of man. Animals can have no religion, because they have no capacity for it. Man has such a capacity, but a capacity that varies according to his spiritual and intellectual advancement. He loves; he aspires; he looks out on a world of mystery; he wants happiness; death is before him. He is conscious of his limitations and infirmities, and the need of superhuman assistance. So a religion cf some kind is inevitable. The best religion will be one that supplies his highest want, that puts his whole nature to its right and intended use. Pure Christianity does this. But there are perversions of Christianity. Let there be misconceptions of the divine character, and hence of the government of the universe and the object of our existence, and religion will show the error. Now I assume that true religion ought to be promotive of human happiness. "Let the righteous be glad," says the Psalmist. And our Lord among His tenderest words said to His disciples, "These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full." Revolutionary Churches in Revolutionary Seasons: by Dagmawi M. Wube Pdf

Since the downfall of the Derge and the establishment of the decree for religious freedom, there have been types of problems related to the size and type of groups that have greatly affected the Ethiopian evangelical church. The first category of problem is due to the attraction that many contemporary church leaders have for reaching multitudes and building mega-church ministries at the expense of small group ministries. Because of the priority on the large group environment, small group ministries have been neglected resulting in a whole generation of students and people who have never experience the vibrant spiritual benefits of a small group. As a result, believers are inclined to attend only Sunday Worship Services and the rest of the week live disconnected from vital relational community and involvement. Too many churches in Ethiopia today have chosen to focus on the quantity of the people rather than the quality of the disciple, resulting in the spiritual diseases of nominalism and carnality. Discipleship and biblical Koinonia are being ignored; therefore, many people are not experiencing the richness of biblical Christianity in many practical ways. This has resulted in the loss of Ethiopian Evangelicals’ identity as well as an influence on all aspects of Ethiopian culture including her institutions and government.

Seamlessly weaving biblical truths into everyday life, Catherine McNiel will help you discover an unbelievable reality: God meets and transforms you in the mess and abundance of every mundane moment.

Reasons for the Seasons by William Paul Jones Pdf

Do you ever find yourself drowning in secularization and commercialization, being pulled under as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas intermingle and fly by in a frantic blur? Have you ever wondered if there is any way to reclaim the true meaning of such seasons as Advent and Lent, and be helped to live more intentionally and meaningfully the other Christian celebrations? Reasons for the Seasons makes that possible in a delightfully engaging manner. With humor and rich illustrations, this widely read spiritual author draws upon life experiences from childhood in Appalachia to his teaching at Princeton University and into his spiritual pilgrimage intent on uniting his Protestant mind with a Catholic heart. Focus is given to the church's central seasons of Advent/Christmas/Epiphany and Lent/Easter/Pentecost. Lesser-known Christian celebrations are engaged, such as Candlemas, Trinity Sunday, and the Feast of the Transfiguration. Additionally, illumination is provided for exploring such secular holidays as New Year's, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Halloween. This book will be informative and engaging not only for personal use but also in enabling families to deepen their celebrative time together. Groups will also find it helpful for study, as will churches in giving depth to their liturgical planning.

First and Second Chronicles by Andrew E. Hill Pdf

The Chronicles are more than a history of ancient Israel under the ascent and rule of the Davidic dynasty. They are a story whose grand theme is hope. Great battles are fought, heroes and tyrants vie for power, Israel splits into rival kingdoms, and the soul of God's holy nation oscillates between faithlessness and revival. Yet above this tossing sea of human events, God's covenant promises reign untroubled and supreme. First and Second Chronicles are a narrative steeped in the best and worst of the human heart--but they are also a revelation of Yahweh at work, forwarding his purposes in the midst of fallible people. God has a plan to which he is committed. Today, as then, God redirects our vision from our circumstances in this turbulent world to the surety of his kingdom, and to himself as our source of confidence and peace. Exploring the links between the Bible and our own times, Andrew E. Hill shares perspectives on 1 and 2 Chronicles that reveal ageless truths for our twenty-first-century lives. Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable--but the job is only half done The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our postmodern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today.
