Thrusters and Sleepers by A PEP Report Pdf

First published in 1965. This book is of compelling interest to all concerned with the good management of industry. This report examines the attitudes of managers towards the problems that confront them. The attitude of managers can be divided in to two broad categories, described in the report as 'thrusting' and 'sleeping'. The research conducted in this report shows that the managements of 'thrusting' firms are characterized, first, by a determination to expand, secondly by a precise knowledge of the environment in which they operate and, thirdly, by the systematic use of techniques which enable them to make rational decisions. In order to find possible ways in which more firms might achieve a similar 'self-awareness' PEP staff had discussions with nearly 100 businessmen, senior civil servants, scientists and educationalists. As a result of these investigations PEP has formulated some suggestions as to how the gap between thrusters and sleepers might be narrowed to the benefit of the whole economy.

Management Strategies by Samuel Eilon Pdf

The wide range of possible performance criteria for business enterprises raises serious questions of definition and measurement. Indeed, measurement is at the heart of the analysis of success and failure of business operations, and much depends on the quality of the information that is available. The evaluation of business performance comes into sharp focus with the pUblication of companies' annual and semi-annual accounts, which are then followed by commentaries from stockbrokers and business analysts in reports to investors and in articles in the financial press. Captains of industry may not have to suffer the indignity of frequent public opinion polls that gauge the popularity of politicians. Nevertheless, they are plagued by a similar phenomenon, in that views expressed by analysts, customers, shareholders and investors, serve as powerful reminders to senior executives that the business world is subject to many upheavals and that even the most seemingly secure can suddenly fall from grace.

The Rise and Decline of Small Firms (Routledge Revivals) by Jonathan Boswell Pdf

First published in 1973, this title examines the development patterns of small businesses. It considers why people found firms; the factors that contribute to entrepreneurial success; problems of management succession and inheritance; the strengths and weaknesses of family firms; the reasons why small firms are taken over; and the social, economic and managerial context of their growth, decline, and revival. Based on a survey of sixty-four firms, each employing fewer than five hundred people, in engineering, hosiery, and knitwear, and on the records of 370 similar organisations, a striking gap in performance and management attitudes emerges as between dynamic, mostly founder-run firms and stagnant, mostly inherited ones. Where many books are either minutely specialised or highly abstract and over-generalised, Jonathan Boswell’s work is practical and diagnostic, probing the inner recesses of the small firm sector. With particular relevance to the difficulties faced by entrepreneurs in today’s economic environment, this title advances selective measures to deal with old firms and inheritance, and a wide range of policies to encourage new entrepreneurship.

The Single Market Programme as a Stimulus to Change by David G. Mayes,Peter Hart Pdf

This 1994 book offers a comparison of British and German industries' reaction to the opportunities and threats offered by the single European market (SEM). It outlines the effect that the SEM was expected to have on the two countries and contrasts this with their actual progress based on published data and a detailed study of four industries. While the single European market has had an impact, many measures have had a far weaker effect than expected. The existence of other barriers not tackled by the SEM programme - weakened measures, poor implementation, global business trends and the recent recession - helps dominate the impact of the SEM. Nevertheless the SEM stands out as one of the striking influences on British and German industries for many years. Germany, with its geographical advantage and stronger manufacturing seems better placed to benefit, but the less regulated and often more flexible UK economy may have competitive advantages as the pressures increase.

The Growth of the British Economy 1918–1968 by G. A. Phillips,R. T. Maddock Pdf

Originally published in 1973, the aim of this work was to discuss the various factors governing the rate of growth of the British economy since the First World War. It endeavours to explain – or at least to provide the groundwork for an explanation of – the movements of aggregate production and productivity in this period. In so doing it examines two particular, and partly antithetical questions: why Britain exceeded the predictions of economic theorists who, until at least the Second World War, had forecast a retardation of growth in all mature industrial economies; and why, especially since 1950, the economy has expanded less quickly than many professional economists, and almost all politicians, thought possible. The authors look, in turn, at the changing trends in effective economic demand, both domestic and foreign; the supply of labour and capital; and the role of management and the state in fostering growth. Their object is to produce a balanced mixture of the available historical and statistical evidence and the relevant economic theory. They introduce their readers, at the same time, to the more specialized works of both disciplines. The book is the product of a fruitful collaboration between an economist and a historian, both with considerable experience in teaching students, combining their two subjects. It marries, accordingly, the qualities of apt and informative use of evidence, wide-ranging theoretical discussion, and clarity of exposition.

The Employment of Merchant Seamen by Jonathan S. Kitchen Pdf

This book, first published in 1980, covers the employment of merchant seamen, principally from the perspective of a labour lawyer, but including a great deal of material not normally found in books on labour law. It also shows how the law is but one kind of rule; that the collective organisations of works and employers create and enforce rules of industrial practice that have just as important an effect on the lives of those they cover.
