Time: Absolute Victory by Editors of Time Magazine Pdf

In the last, triumphant months of World War II, young Americans won their nations greatest victoryor victories. For the war they won was a world war, a conflict fought on two very different fronts in two very different ways. In Europe, the battle-tested troops who had landed in Normandy on D-Day fought their way onto Adolf Hitlers doorstep, then crossed the Rhine and brought down the Nazis thousand-year Reich. Meanwhile, across the Pacific, sailors, Marines and airmen teamed up to invade a series of crucial islands Tarawa, Iwo Jima, Okinawarolling back a tough Japanese enemy and paving the way for the surprising end of the war with the dropping of an atom bomb on Hiroshima. Every step of every day, these members of The Greatest Generation were shadowed by reporters and photographers from two great American magazines, Time and Life. Now, the editors of Time have returned to these archives to compile a memorable, visually stunning portrait of those stirring times, Americas Greatest Generation and Their World War II Triumph.

The Philosopher as Witness by Michael L. Morgan,Benjamin Pollock Pdf

Emil Fackenheim (1916–2003), one of the most important Jewish philosophers of the twentieth century, called on the world at large not only to bear witness to the Holocaust as an unprecedented assault on Judaism and on humanity, but also to recognize that the question of what it means to philosophize—indeed, what it means to be human—must be raised anew in its wake. The Philosopher as Witness begins with two recent essays written by Fackenheim himself and includes responses to the questions that Fackenheim posed to philosophy, Judaism, and humanity after the Holocaust. The contributors to this book dare to extend that questioning through a critical examination of Fackenheim's own thought and through an exploration of some of the ramifications of his work for fields of study and realms of religious life that transcend his own.

Hollow Heroes by Michael Arnold Pdf

The book reveals the truths behind the conventional images of three of Great Britain's primary military leaders during and immediately after the Second World War. In each case there was a totally different side to each man, which demonstrates that a great deal of their reputation was built on contrived results, deception and dishonesty. It examines the influence and impediment of ÒclassÓ on the performance of the British Army in World War II, and quotes the views of the Americans that far too often there was an unwillingness among the British to base officer promotion on effectiveness rather than on social background; conforming was more important than performing, as anyone who has served in the British ArmyÕs ranks would agree. At the same time, Montgomery feared and was jealous of Patton, whose rate of advance was nearly always twice that of MontyÕs. The services of Field Marshals Wavell and Auchinleck, two of BritainÕs finest commanders of the war, were largely lost to Britain because of ChurchillÕs consistent interfering in field matters and his need to contrive almost anything to remain in power after he had been responsible for the fall of Singapore. This book includes the bizarre case of Major-General Dorman-Smith, one of BritainÕs most brilliant original thinkers, who without reason was sacked by Churchill. Dorman-Smith was the tactician who had produced BritainÕs victory over Rommel at the first battle of Alamein, but his crime seems have been overachievement; an unforgivable sin in some eyes. MountbattenÕs fumbling in India is also realistically portrayed in these pages, putting paid to the Òman for the centuryÕsÓ overly embellished reputation.

The Organization and Order or Battle of Militaries in World War Ii by Charles D. Pettibone Pdf

There are numerous Order of Battle books on the market. So what makes this one so special? Why should one decide on this particular book? Most Order of Battle books usually deal only at the division and corps level of a countrys army. Most higher commands are not covered. This book deals with all the branches of a countrys military, giving a breakdown of all the major echelons of command, from theater down to brigade, under each component (army group, armies, corps, division, and brigade), and the equivalent command for the other military branches are included. Second, it attempts to give an overall command structure of the countrys military, showing the central headquarters command structure as well as the major components (army groups, armies, corps, etc.). Third, most Order of Battle books list the commander and their dates of tenure. This one includes those but also lists their next duty assignments or where they went after leaving the post. One can literally trace a general officers career through the upper echelons of command, making this series completely different from all the others on the market.

The Holocaust and the Nonrepresentable by David Patterson Pdf

Many books focus on issues of Holocaust representation, but few address why the Holocaust in particular poses such a representational problem. David Patterson draws from Emmanuel Levinas's contention that the Good cannot be represented. He argues that the assault on the Good is equally nonrepresentable and this nonrepresentable aspect of the Holocaust is its distinguishing feature. Utilizing Jewish religious thought, Patterson examines how the literary word expresses the ineffable and how the photographic image manifests the invisible. Where the Holocaust is concerned, representation is a matter not of imagination but of ethical implication, not of what it was like but of what must be done. Ultimately Patterson provides a deeper understanding of why the Holocaust itself is indefinable—not only as an evil but also as a fundamental assault on the very categories of good and evil affirmed over centuries of Jewish teaching and testimony.

America in the Modern World by Stephen Burman Pdf

The past few years have witnessed changes which will be of lasting significance in international affairs. The revolutions in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, for example, are fundamental not only for those societies but also in their implications for the rest of the world. They signal the passing of the international order that has governed the post war era. Since the United States was the principal architect of that order, its passing will have fundamental implications for America's role in the modern world. It has been suggested that this transformation will reduce the US to the status of an ordinary country, indeed that the signs of decline are already everywhere apparent. In this book, the author argues to the contrary that the emerging new world order offers great opportunities to the US to maintain its status as the leading power in the world.

TIME 1945 by Editors of TIME Pdf

In the 12 months of 1945, the world was radically reshaped: both Hitler’s Germany and imperial Japan fell to Allied armies, in scenes of death and destruction that still defy belief. A new world order began to emerge, as the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. began their long Cold War duel, the United Nations was founded, and Europe’s colonial empires began to collapse. New technologies unleashed by the war—radar, computers, rockets and atomic power—began to revolutionize our lives. At home, millions flocked to new suburban homes, television began to replace radio, and returning vets sparked an era-defining “baby boom.” Now TIME captures all these earth-shaking events in 1945: The Year That Changed the World. Join us as vintage photos, illuminating graphics and fascinating “then and now” stories recapture the sense of turmoil, hope and change that followed history’s greatest conflict.

Open Wounds by David Patterson Pdf

In this book, David Patterson sets out to describe why Jews must live -- but especially think -- in a way that is distinctly Jewish. For Patterson, the primary responsibility of post-Holocaust Jewish thought is to avoid thinking in the same categories that led to the attempted extermination of the Jewish people. The Nazis, he says, were not anti- Semitic because they were racists; they were racists because they were anti-Semitic, and their anti-Semitism was furthered by a Western ontological tradition that made God irrelevant by placing the thinking ego at the center of being. If the Jewish people, in their particularity, are "chosen" to attest to the universal "chosenness" of every human being, then each human being is singled out to assume an absolute responsibility to and for all human beings. And that, Patterson says, is why the anti-Semite hates the Jew: because the very presence of the Jew robs him of his ego and serves as a constant reminder that we are all forever in debt, and that redemption is always yet to be. Thus the Nazis, before they killed Jewish bodies, were compelled to murder Jewish souls through the degradations of the Shoah. But why is the need for a revitalized Jewish thought so urgent today? It is not only because modern Jewish thought, hoping to accommodate itself to rational idealism, is thereby obliged to put itself in league with postmodernists who "preach tolerance for everything except biblically based religion, beginning with Judaism," and who effectively call on Jews, as fellow "citizens of the global village," to disappear. It is also because without the Jewish reality of Jerusalem, there is only the Jewish abstraction of Auschwitz, for in Auschwitz the Jews were murdered not as husbands and wives, parents and children, but as efficiently numbered units. If the Jews, Patterson claims, are not a people set apart by "a Voice that is other than human," then the Holocaust can never be understood as evil rather than simply immoral. With Open Wounds, Patterson aims to make possible a religious response to the Holocaust. Post-Holocaust Jewish thinking, confronting the work of healing the world -- of tikkun haolam -- must recover not just Jewish tradition but also the category of the holy in human beings' thinking about humanity.

The Medusa Code by Murat Ukray Pdf

Are You Ready to Read the Best Pandemic Science-Fiction Novel of the World? Could there be an important secret that has been hidden for thousands of years in the symbol of the snake climbing the tree, which is the symbol of medicine? Can the source of diseases be the Devil? Could it be a coincidence that the snake figure in the scriptures is also a symbol of Devil? Moreover, could this most evil creature of all ages have been hiding underground, somewhere in the world, using the name of a mythological being the snake-headed 'Medusa'? Moreover, could Hell have actually been there as well? Yes, in fact, everything on Earth began with the first beginning of humanity; with the story of Devil setting him up, that is, being expelled from Heaven. However, everything in our story began at the end of the 1980s, when a group of German scientists digging underground in the depths of the Bavarian forests in southern Germany heard some strange sounds and screams coming from underground. As a result of many years of excavation and drilling, they discovered a tunnel extending thousands of kilometers underground. This tunnel was actually a gate to Hell and Devil. Upon hearing and recording these horrible sounds, they were frightened, and after a while the project was left unfinished. In the early 2020s, a health organization with the world's most secret and evil power, under the leadership of a horrible evil man, Dr. Cornelli, nicknamed 'Frankenstein', in order to reach the source of this sound and communicate with it, he continued this project, which was left unfinished after 40 years, and started a big project called 'Medusa'. This horrible person, who also introduces himself as the 'White Angel of Death', has been secretly managing this project for years in order to develop new species and viruses that will destroy life and humanity on earth through genetic studies by conducting animal experiments among various species in a laboratory. On top of that, his only purpose now is to follow the orders of this Devil that lives underground. By the 2040s, there is no scientific explanation for the cause of rapidly spreading virus outbreaks all over the world. Billions of people are in quarantine, and many have died in these epidemics. Moreover, a series of murders and assassinations, especially involving medical doctors and professors, began at that time. Everyone connected with Herbert Johnson, a professor of History and Mythology who is trying to uncover the truth of the virus, begins to be killed by a horrible chain of assassinations. Prof. Herbert Johnson and everyone he wants to help fight this evil are now waiting for death as a victim in the goal of this evil force, along with billions of people fighting in the grip of the virus. In contrast, the American Archaeologist John Smith and his Russian friend, Professor of Archaeology, Prof. Gregory Kravnik is the only one who can stop them, albeit at the cost of their lives, and for this they have to fight with them. Moreover, if they cannot stop them and this unseen evil force, now their own lives are in danger along with billions of others. The only way to stop this impending Apocalypse is to find a lost statue of Medusa, the location of which no one knows, located at the entrance to the tunnel leading to this underground hell. Because a secret gate inside this statue of Medusa is the beginning of a long and difficult path towards Devil, the source of all these evils and diseases. The Medusa Code will drag you to one of the 7 gates of Hell in the underground. Are You Ready Gate to Hell?
