TM 9-252 Bofors 40-MM Automatic Gun M1 (AA) and 40-MM Antiaircraft Gun Carriages: M2 and M2a1 Technical Manual by War Department Pdf

The Bofors 40-mm gun is an anti-aircraft, multi-purpose autocannon designed in the 1930s by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors. It was one of the most popular anti-aircraft systems during World War II, used by most of the western Allies as well as the Axis powers. The cannon remains in service as of 2013, making it one of the longest serving artillery pieces of all time as well as the most wide spread. During World War II, In order to supply both the United States Army and Navy with a much greater number of guns, Chrysler began mass production. Over the lifetime of the production, their engineers introduced numerous additional changes to make the manufacturing process more efficient, eventually reducing the overall time needed to build a gun by half. In U.S. Army service, the single mount Bofors was known as the 40-mm Automatic Gun M1. The U.S. version of the gun fired three variants of the British Mark II high explosive shell as well as the M81A1 armor-piercing round, which was capable of penetrating some fifty millimeters of homogeneous armor plate at a range of 500 yards. Created in 1944, this technical manual reveals a great deal about the 40-mm Automatic Gun M1's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details many aspects of its sighting equipment, ammunition, accessories much more. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

The Bofors Gun by Terry Gander Pdf

The definitive history of this enduring and versatile anti-aircraft weapon, including many photos and drawings. The 40mm Bofors gun, first produced in the 1930s, has become one of the most famous artillery pieces of all time. It shows no sign of fading from the defense scene as, in the second decade of the twenty-first century, it performs in many roles that were not contemplated by its original designers. It has also proven to be so versatile that it is now allied to electronic and other technological marvels that were mere pipe dreams only a few years ago. When the Bofors entered the international defense market, its primary quarry, the military aircraft, was still a slow and fragile machine that could be terminally damaged by a single hit from a 40mm projectile. Terry Gander describes this early period in the gun’s development and he shows how, despite recent increases in target speed and other performance parameters, it can still inflict a one-hit kill on almost any aircraft, helicopter or guided missile. Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of the story is that the fundamentals of today’s Bofors guns remain virtually unchanged from the very first examples to come off the Karlskoga production line in Sweden. In all its forms, the Bofors continues to be a sound, reliable, and lethal piece of military hardware that has given good service to gunners all over the world. Terry Gander’s comprehensive account of the history of this remarkable weapon over the course of almost eighty years is fascinating reading and an invaluable work of reference for military historians and artillery specialists alike.

TM 9-331 155-MM Howitzer M1 and 155-MM Howitzer Carriage M1: Technical Manual by War Department Pdf

The 155-mm Howitzer M1 was first produced in 1942 as a medium artillery piece. It saw service with the US Army during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, before being replaced by the M198 Howitzer. The gun was used by the armed forces of many nations, and in some countries, it still remains in service. The 155-mm Howitzer was developed as an afterthought. A new carriage was under development for much of the 1930s for the existing World War I era M1918 until 1939 when it was realized that it did not seem logical to put a new carriage underneath an obsolete howitzer. Consequently, development began anew with a carriage designed to be used for the 155-mm Howitzer. This was completed by May 15th, 1941 when the Howitzer M1 on the Carriage M1 was standardized. The howitzer itself differed from the older model by a lengthened barrel of twenty calibers and a new breech mechanism. Uniquely, it was the sole 'slow-cone' interrupted screw mechanism to enter service after 1920. This meant that two separate movements were necessary to open the breech, versus the single movement of the 'steep cone' mechanism that simultaneously rotated and withdrew the breech. Created in 1943, this technical manual reveals a great deal about the 155-mm Howitzer M1's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details many aspects of its assembly, ammunition, and accessories. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Tm9-325 105mm Howitzer M2a1 Technical Manual by Department of the Army Pdf

The 105-mm M2A1 Howitzer was the standard light field artillery piece for the United States in World War II, seeing action in both the European and Pacific theaters. Starting production in 1941, it quickly entered the war against the Imperial Japanese Army in the Pacific, where it gained a reputation for its accuracy and powerful punch. The M2A1 fired 105-mm high explosive (HE) semi-fixed ammunition and had a range of 11,270 meters, making it suitable for supporting infantry. All of these qualities of the weapon, along with its widespread production, led to its adoption by many countries after the war. Its ammunition type also became the standard for many foreign countries' later models. In 1962, the artillery designation system was changed and the 105-mm M2A1 Howitzer became the M101A1. It continued to see service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Today, the M101A1 has been retired by the U.S. military, though it continues to see service with many other countries. Created in 1948, this technical manual reveals a great deal about the M2A1 Howitzer's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details many aspects of its firing, recoil and other mechanisms. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

TM 9-751 155-MM Gun Motor Carriage M12 and Cargo Carrier M30 Technical Manual by War Department Pdf

The 155-mm Gun Motor Carriage M12 was a U.S. self-propelled gun developed during the Second World War. Only 100 were built; sixty in 1942 and another forty in 1943. The M12 was built on the chassis of the M3 Lee tank. It had an armored driver's compartment, but the gun crew were located in an open topped area at the back of the vehicle. An earth spade at the rear was employed to absorb recoil. During 1943 the vehicles were used for training or put into storage. Before the invasion of France, seventy four M12s were upgraded in preparation for combat operations. They were employed successfully throughout the campaign in North-West Europe. Although designed primarily for indirect fire, during assaults on heavy fortifications the M12s were sometimes employed in a direct-fire role. Limited storage space meant that only ten projectiles and propellant charges could be carried on the vehicle. Given this, a similar vehicle without the gun was produced as the Cargo Carrier M30. This was designed to transport the gun crew and additional ammunition. In operational conditions the M12 and M30 would serve in pairs. The M30, which could carry forty rounds of 155-mm ammunition, was armed with a .50-caliber Browning M2 machine gun. Created in 1944, this technical manual reveals a great deal about the M12's and M30's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details many aspects of the M12's engine, cooling, power, suspension and other systems. TM E9-369a German 88-MM Antiaircraft Gun Material Technical Manual by War Department Pdf

The 88-mm gun was a German anti-aircraft and anti-tank artillery gun from World War II. It was used substantially by Germany throughout the war, and was one of the most recognized German weapons of the war. Development of the 88-mm led to a wide variety of weapons. The 88-mm name applies to a series of guns, the first one officially called the Flak 18, then the improved Flak 36, and later the Flak 37. Flak is a contraction of the German word Flugzeugabwehrkanone, meaning "aircraft-defense cannon," the original purpose of the eighty-eight. In English, "flak" became a generic term for ground anti-aircraft fire. In informal German use, the guns were universally known as the Acht-acht, meaning eighty-eight. During the North African campaign, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, also known as The Desert Fox, made the most effective use of the weapon, as he lured tanks of the British 8th Army into traps by baiting them with apparently retreating tanks. When the enemy tanks pursued, hidden 88-mm guns picked them off at ranges far beyond those of the tank's guns. A mere two flak battalions destroyed 264 tanks throughout 1941. Created in 1943, this technical manual reveals a great deal about the 88-mm's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those responsible for operation and maintenance, it details many aspects of the 88-mm's assembly, recoil and accessories. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.
