Tomorrow I'll Be Slim (Psychology Revivals) by Sara Gilbert Pdf

Why do so many people try dieting, only to fail? What distinguishes those who succeed from those who do not? Are fat people really any different from thin people? What makes us eat, and how do we stop eating? And how can dieting trigger problems with eating normally? Originally published in 1989, Sara Gilbert discusses these questions in Tomorrow I’ll Be Slim, and draws on what is known about the psychology of eating, overeating, and weight control to dispel a number of popular myths about dieting. She shows how unsuccessful dieting can lead to new problems with eating and weight control. She points out that long-term success in slimming has more to do with individual factors such as a dieter’s expectations, self-confidence, or social and family circumstances than with ‘will-power’; and as much to do with how a diet is managed as with the content of a diet sheet. She suggests ways in which people who want to be slimmer can make a realistic assessment of their need to diet. She explains how individuals who seriously need to lose weight or change the way they eat might draw up effective strategies for themselves and prepare for the inevitable difficulties we all face whenever we try to change old habits. Finally, she addresses the problems of taking the emphasis off dieting and examining our attitudes to a slim figure as the key to happiness itself.

Slim's Table by Mitchell Duneier Pdf

At the Valois "See Your Food" cafeteria on Chicago's South Side, black and white men gather over cups of coffee and steam-table food. Mitchell Duneier, a sociologist, spent four years at the Valois writing this moving profile of the black men who congregate at "Slim's Table." Praised as "a marvelous study of those who should not be forgotten" by the Wall Street Journal,Slim's Table helps demolish the narrow sociological picture of black men and simple media-reinforced stereotypes. In between is a "respectable" citizenry, too often ignored and little understood. "Slim's Table is an astonishment. Duneier manages to fling open windows of perception into what it means to be working-class black, how a caring community can proceed from the most ordinary transactions, all the while smashing media-induced stereotypes of the races and race relations."—Citation for Chicago Sun Times Chicago Book of the Year Award "An instant classic of ethnography that will provoke debate and provide insight for years to come."—Michael Eric Dyson, Chicago Tribune "Mr. Duneier sees the subjects of his study as people and he sees the scale of their lives as fully human, rather than as diminished versions of grander lives lived elsewhere by people of another color. . . . A welcome antidote to trends in both journalism and sociology."—Roger Wilkins, New York Times Book Review

Slim by Design by Brian Wansink Pdf

In this paradigm-shattering book, leading behavioural economist and food psychologist Brian Wansink - dubbed the 'Sherlock Holmes of food' and the 'wizard of why' - offers a radical new philosophy for weight loss. The answer isn't to tell people what to do: it's to set up their living environments so that they will naturally lose weight. Using cutting-edge, never-before-seen research from his acclaimed Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, Wansink reveals how innovative and inexpensive design changes - from home kitchens to restaurants, from grocery stores to schools and workplaces - can make it mindlessly easy for people to eat healthier and make it more profitable for the companies who sell the food. In Slim by Design, Wansink argues that the easiest, quickest and most natural way to reverse weight gain is to work with human nature, not against it. He demonstrates how schools can nudge kids to take an apple instead of a cookie, how restaurants can increase profits by selling half-size portions, how supermarkets can double the amount of fruits and vegetables they sell, and how anyone can cut plate refills at home by more than a third. Interweaving drawings, charts, floor plans and scorecards with new scientific studies and compelling insights that will make you view your surroundings in an entirely fresh way, this entertaining, eye-opening book offers practical solutions for changing your everyday environment to make you, your family and even your community slim by design.

The Urban Ethnography Reader by Mitchell Duneier,Philip Kasinitz,Alexandra Murphy Pdf

Urban ethnography is the firsthand study of city life by investigators who immerse themselves in the worlds of the people about whom they write. Since its inception in the early twentieth century, this great tradition has helped define how we think about cities and city dwellers. The past few decades have seen an extraordinary revival in the field, as scholars and the public at large grapple with the increasingly complex and pressing issues that affect the ever-changing American city-from poverty to the immigrant experience, the changing nature of social bonds to mass incarceration, hyper-segregation to gentrification. As both a method of research and a form of literature, urban ethnography has seen a notable and important resurgence. This renewed interest demands a clear and comprehensive understanding of the history and development of the field to which this volume contributes by presenting a selection of past and present contributions to American urban ethnographic writing. Beginning with an original introduction highlighting the origins, practices, and significance of the field, editors Mitchell Duneier, Philip Kasinitz, and Alexandra Murphy guide the reader through the major and fascinating topics on which it has focused -- from the community, public spaces, family, education, work, and recreation, to social policy, and the relationship between ethnographers and their subjects. An indispensable guide, The Urban Ethnography Reader provides an overview of how the discipline has grown and developed while offering students and scholars a selection of some of the finest social scientific writing on the life of the modern city.

The Hollywood Posse by Diana Serra Cary Pdf

After 1912, when the great cattle empires began to crumble, hundreds of seasoned cowboys found themselves jobless. A handful of discarded horsemen, however, stumbled upon an entirely new frontier-Hollywood. In a rare insider’s view, Diana Serra Cary tells the story of these cowboys, who survived for another fifty years as riders, stuntmen, and doubles for the stars. Filled with humorous anecdotes, The Hollywood Posse reveals the full story of the cowboys’ long and bitter feud with autocratic director Cecil B. De Mille; their relationships with the great Western stars-from the flamboyant Tom Mix to the durable John Wayne; and above all, their touching loyalty, code of honor, and devotion to each other.

The Rippling Storm by Otis Morphew Pdf

Is time travel possible?...There are scientists who believe that it will be in a few years. But who knows for sure what nature can do, or forces higher than we? I sure don’t,...and neither did Cory and Jessica Vance,...until it happened! One minute, they were asleep in their own bed, in 2007, and the next morning, they woke up in someone else’s house, in the year 1876! Sound bizarre?...To say the least! Why did it happen to them,...and for what reason? That was only two of a few dozen questions they pondered on for the next sixteen days,...and became an adventure they would never forget! They were doing things only imagined before. They were suffering fear of the unknown, fear of losing their humanity or, who they were,...all without knowing why it had happened? There were dozens of theories, maybes and what ifs, but the bottom line was that they were thought to be someone they were not and because of that, were forced to carry out an event that had already happened once,...but now, it would happen again, with them as the new cast in an ongoing serial. They were about to face dying at the hands of a ruthless killer if the madman’s plot succeeded,...and it would succeed unless Cory was able to change the outcome of what had already happened! But if he did, they also knew that it could change the future and that, blended with the dreaded fear of dying was what worried them the most. The thought of leaving their family, and they not knowing what had happened to them was devastating. But they had no choice, they had been sent to the past, obviously to right a wrong that happened there. But why,...to fix a wrong that happened in 2007?...One that was about to happen,...what? They may never know! This is a time odyssey, a glimpse of what could be possible,...and no one knows for certain that it is not,...and who knows, science may discover the secret, but if it does, it’ll be because a greater force allowed it, a force that already has the formula.

California Slim by Andrew J. Bernstein Pdf

There are literary reminiscences that reek of self-congratulation over the authors’ proximity to famous movers and shakers. Andy Bernstein’s California Slim aspires to far more than that—and achieves it. Andy was there, at the onset of the post-’50s revolution that, as a beat poet once put it, roared as it ripped the threadbare fabric of an age. Andy was no distant, casual observer during the tumultuous ’60s and ’70s; he was at the heart of the maelstrom, and writes about it with candor, humor, and originality. The story begins, for God’s sake, with Andy and his then unknown banjo teacher, a young Jerry Garcia, fingerpicking in a back room at Dana Morgan’s Music Studio in Palo Alto in 1962. A skinny six-foot-seven-inch Jewish kid (later known as “California Slim”), Andy divided his time between the usual adolescent interests and music, for which he would go on to provide a capital M by promoting and staging concerts throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. His Palo Alto nightclub, Homer’s Warehouse, across the street from the Stanford University campus, brought revolutionary musicians (among them, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee) to young sensibilities hungry for new driving rhythms and thought-provoking lyrics. The early chapters of this book set the stage for Andy’s eventual hooking-up with Willie Nelson and his Family—which felt, Andy said, “like reading a really good book that I couldn’t put down.” That feeling led directly, if gradually, to California Slim. And you, dear reader, won’t be able to put it down, either. —Tony Compagno

Complete Works of Peter Cheyney. Lemmy Caution Books, Slim Callaghan Books, Dark Novels, Short Fiction by Peter Cheyney Pdf

Peter Cheyney is perhaps best known for his short stories and novels about agent/detective Lemmy Caution. Caution was first portrayed as a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent, and in later stories as a private detective. Another popular creation was the private detective Slim Callaghan who also appeared in a series of novels and subsequent film adaptations. He was constructed as a British response to the more hardboiled detectives of American fiction such as Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. A meticulous researcher, Cheyney kept a massive set of files on criminal activity in London, but these were destroyed during the Blitz in 1941; he however, soon began to replace his collection of clippings. He dictated his work. Typically he would "act out" his stories for his secretary, Miss Sprauge, who would copy them down in shorthand and type them up later… Lemmy Caution Books This Man Is Dangerous Poison Ivy Dames Don't Care Can Ladies Kill? Divorcees Corner by Tim Sullivan Pdf

This is the story of the trials and tribulations of young men in their late twenties--early thirties during the fifties. They had gotten older and graduated from the soft-ball sponsoring local neighborhood saloons to the “new sheriff” in town, Cocktail lounges. These were nothing more than the same old saloons that had been wallpapered and remodeled with dropped ceilings and mirrored walls. Some had been further enhanced with potted plants in the windows and women bartenders. Their social lives were designed around these places. TV was still in it’s infancy and the sport bars were not in play as yet. They would stop in almost every night for a couple of beers, make a few bets on games or the ponies for the next day and collect any winnings--(If any) They were also at that point in life where, whether they realized it or not, they were looking for a life partner to fulfill their lives. But for the most part, as the old song goes, “They were looking for love in all the wrong places.” One of these places was a cocktail lounge called Divorcees Corner, whose motto was C’mon in if you don’t have one, you’ll get one. They catered to the older crowd. At that time, women over twenty six-twenty seven were considered “old maids” so they frequented these places along with a collection of divorces and widows.
