Cultural and Heritage Tourism in Asia and the Pacific by Bruce Prideaux,Dallen Timothy,Kaye Chon Pdf

The Asia Pacific region’s enormous diversity of living cultures and preserved heritage sites has significant appeal to many tourists. However tourism has grown so rapidly that many issues associated with the incorporation of cultural and heritage experiences in tourist itineraries (such as authenticity verses commodification, exploitation of national cultures, impacts on local communities, and the management of heritage resources) have not been adequately addressed and must be debated. This revealing book reviews recent developments in cultural and heritage tourism in the Asia Pacific region and provides a discussion on how communities have faced and overcome significant challenges to develop and market their culture and heritage resources. A range of models and case studies are used to deepen the reader’s understanding of heritage and cultural issues, to illustrate many of the more controversial issues, and to examine new evaluative, and planning tools. This book is a special issue of the Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research.

Tourism in the Post-Pandemic World by Ms.Manuela Goretti,Mr.Lamin Y Leigh,Aleksandra Babii,Mr.Serhan Cevik,Stella Kaendera,Mr.Dirk V Muir,Sanaa Nadeem,Mr.Gonzalo Salinas Pdf

This departmental paper analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism in the Asia Pacific region, Latin America, and Caribbean countries. Many tourism dependent economies in these regions, including small states in the Pacific and the Caribbean, entered the pandemic with limited fiscal space, inadequate external buffers, and foreign exchange revenues extremely concentrated in tourism. The empirical analysis leverages on an augmented gravity model to draw lessons from past epidemics and finds that the impact of infectious diseases on tourism flows is much greater in developing countries than in advanced economies.

Climate Change and Tourism in the Asia Pacific by Bruce Prideaux,Bob McKercher,Karen McNamara Pdf

Climate change will exert an enormous impact on all societies in the medium to long term. Tourism, as both a commercial activity and social phenomenon is not immune. To date, industry has been slow to recognise the scale of the threat posed by a changing climate on its operations and consumers have been extremely reluctant to modify their travel behaviours. The Asia Pacific region is well on the way to being the 21st Century powerhouse of tourism, however the manner in which it develops will, in part, be determined by how the global community responds to climate change. This book examines climate change issues related to tourism in the Asia Pacific region. Chapters discuss demand and supply side issues, explore government policy responses and introduce several new adaptation models. The book also calls for a more effective linking of social science research with the scientific discourse to create long term resolution of and adaptation to this issue. This book was published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research.

Diversion of Tourism Flows in the Asia & Pacific Region: Lessons for COVID-19 Recovery by Vybhavi Balasundharam,Mr. Robin Koepke Pdf

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a collapse in international tourism, severely impacting the tourism-dependent economies in the Asia & Pacific region. Once countries start reopening, tourism diversion effects could accelerate the recovery in countries that establish themselves as more attractive travel destinations than competitors. We investigate the impact of previous shocks in tourism competitor countries on visitor inflows, with a particular focus on tourism-dependent Pacific Island Countries (PICs). We find that PICs were generally resilient to external shocks and benefitted from diversion effects for certain types of shocks. For example, the share of departures from Australia to PICs increased by 12 percent during the SARS outbreak. We then derive policy implications for the post-COVID-19 revival of inbound tourism to PICs and lessons for the future.

Tourism Crisis and Disaster Management in the Asia-Pacific by Brent W Ritchie,Kom Campiranon Pdf

The Asia-Pacific area is one of the fastest growing tourism regions and a major driver of global tourism in general. Tourism industries in Asia Pacific have been challenged in recent years by a number of major crises and disasters including terrorism, outbreaks (e.g. SARS and Bird Flu), natural disasters (e.g. tsunamis, bushfires, flooding), and political crisis (e.g. protests and political instability). This book contributes to the understanding of crisis and disaster management generally, but with a specific focus on the Asia Pacific. With contributions by international scholars and practitioners, the book discusses both the theoretical and practical approaches toward successful crisis and disaster management.

This important book examines the management of healthcare tourism in the Asia Pacific Region. Its main focus is South Asia, an under-researched part of the region, but it does not neglect the rest of the region or its networks with other regions. The book uncovers the significant roles played by the sociological, physiological, psychological, and economic aspects of healthcare tourism. This compilation of conceptual and empirical research findings from diverse socio-economic and environmental settings in the developing Asia Pacific Region will enable the reader to triangulate the application of sustainable practices in global and local healthcare, while showing the importance of the travel factor in its development. Regardless of the impact of disasters such as the COVD-19 pandemic, healthcare tourism is here to stay in a region that has magnificent attractions, good health infrastructure, and the traditional medicine teachings that have been gifted from unique ancient cultures.
