This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1884 edition. Excerpt: ... TOURIST'S GUIDE TO THE EAST AND NORTH RIDINGS OF YORKSHIRE. (A)-GENERAL DESCRIPTION. A Previous volume of this series deals with the West Riding of Yorkshire, which, being the largest shire in England, contains in its area of 5961 square miles every variety of scenery and equally varied conditions of population and industry. The chief interests of the shire for the tourist and the manufacturer lie, it is true, rather in the West Riding than in the others, though the North Riding is fully equal to (if it does not surpass) the West in its scenery; and even the East, which is not so emphatically a tourist's district, possesses a vast amount that is worth seeing, if only for its unrivalled churches and antiquarian remains. The boundaries of the East Riding are easily denned, those on the E. and the S. being the North Sea and the Humber and Ouse rivers respectively; on the W. the latter river is also its line of demarcation from the West Riding up as far as York, the North Riding then taking the place of the West, the Derwent valley, roughly speaking, marking the division between the East and North. The latter Riding has the North Sea on its N.E. and N. coast, the boundaryline of the Tees separating it from Durham. On the 8.W. the Ouse river separates it from the West Riding for a portion of the distance, succeeded partly by the valley of the B Ure and the hills above Wharfedale; while on the W. a large mass of hill country separates it from Westmoreland. A considerable area of the East Riding is level and flat, particularly on the sea side, where a line defined by the Hull, Beverley, Driffield, and Bridlington railway marks off the great tracts of Holderness and Sunk Island, with their rich agricultural lands and gigantic drains and river...

Excerpt from Tourist's Guide to the West Riding of Yorkshire: Containing Full Information Concerning All Its Principal Places of Resort and Interest A cheap and portable guide-book seems a fit ting accompaniment to a cheap tour; and the Editor has endeavoured to produce one which shall fulfil this purpose, while it directs the atten tion of the traveller to all that is worth seeing. Superfluous description has been avoided, the object of the work being merely to denote the leading points, and thus not to encumber the tourist with unnecessary remarks, which entail a more or less bulky volume.
