Toxic Chemical Releases by Jeremy B. Simmons,United States. Government Accountability Office Pdf

This is an E-supplement to GAO-08-128, which was released on November 30, 2007. The Environmental Protection and Community Right-to-Know Act requires certain facilities to submit Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) reports to their respective states, which have a created range of TRI programs. In order to learn about states' TRI activities, the authors conducted a survey of state TRI co-ordinators in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. This document presents selected results of their survey.

Toxic Chemical Releases by John B. Stephenson Pdf

Fed. law requires certain facilities that manufacture, process, or use any of 581 toxic chemicals to report annually to EPA and their state on the amount of those chemicals released into the air, water, or soil. It also requires EPA to make this info. publicly available. Facilities must either: submit a detailed TRI Form R for each designated chemical used in excess of certain thresholds; or file a simpler Form A certifying that they need not do so. To reduce co. burden, EPA issued a Dec. 2006 rule to expand Form A eligibility for certain facilities and chemicals. This report analyzed: (1) how EPA and others use TRI data; (2) whether EPA followed internal guidelines in developing its rule; and (3) the rule¿s impact on info. avail. to the public. Minimizing Employee Exposure to Toxic Chemical Releases by Ralph W. Plummer Pdf

The objective of this study was to collect data and information from a sample of chemical manufacturing facilities and facilities which use chemicals in other processes to determine what kinds of procedures are currently in practice and to develop a set of recommended procedures which can be used to minimize the possibility of toxic chemical releases. In order to accomplish this task, the authors developed a methodology for collecting data and information concerning procedures currently being practiced to eliminate or reduce toxic chemical spills and releases. In essence, this approach divides the project into three phases: what kinds of procedures are currently being used by the chemical industry and other facilities which use toxic chemicals; what type of toxic chemical release accidents and injuries occur in these facilities; finally, how can this information be integrated into a set of recommended procedures which will decrease the likelihood of a toxic chemical release and, if one does occur, will minimize the exposure and severity of exposure to employees. This report describes both the metholodogy used and the results of its application to the chemical industry. This report provides data collected from fifteen chemical plants and facilities which use toxic chemicals.

Toxic Chemicals by Thomas E. Higgins,Jayanti A. Sachdev,Stephen A. Engleman Pdf

Catastrophic events such as the Bhopal, India tragedy and rising incidences of cancer in areas neighboring industrial facilities have heightened concern over the use of toxic chemicals in manufacturing and industry. Based on the authors' research conducted in Sao Paulo, Brazil, this book explores the history of toxic chemical release reporting programs, presents data on the toxicity of chemicals currently in use, discusses variables that contribute to the relative toxicity of a substance, compares existing programs for reducing environmental threats, and provides specific recommendations for reducing or eliminating the use of toxic chemicals.

Tracking Toxic Substances at Industrial Facilities by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Commission on Life Sciences,Committee to Evaluate Mass Balance Information for Facilities Handling Toxic Substances Pdf

In response to a congressional mandate, this book examines whether knowing the amounts of toxic substances entering and leaving manufacturing facilities is useful in evaluating chemical releases to the environment, waste reduction progress, and chemical management practices. Tracking of these substances with rigorous engineering data is compared with a less resource-intensive alternative to determine the feasibility and potential usefulness to the public and the government.
