Trade Unionism in the United States (Classic Reprint) by Robert Franklin Hoxie Pdf

Excerpt from Trade Unionism in the United States The work Of preparing the manuscript for the printer has consisted mainly in bringing the material together into chapters, using for this purpose the author's course outline and titles. There were many pages in the form of speaker' notes. Where these were full enough ti be used they were drawn together by a word, or, rarely, a sentence for the sake of clearness and form. The major portion of the book, however, is a word for word transcription. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Studies in American Trade Unionism (Classic Reprint) by Jacob H. Hollander Pdf

Excerpt from Studies in American Trade Unionism But much more than the lessening interest of other prob lems, it has, Of course, been the increasing intrinsic im portance of the labor question that really explains the present. Popular absorption in the subject. The marvellous indus trial expansion of the United States in the past decade has been accompanied by a notable change in the quality Of the productive factors. Labor, as an industrial agent, no. Less than capital, has become almost a new thing under an Old name. The familiar problems of the labor world have taken on a more intense phase, and a whole array of new questions challenge attention. Of these labor problems, trade unionism is far and away the most important. Broadly understood, American trade unionism is the Merican labor problem; and, in a narrow acceptation, trade-union policy and practice impinge at some point or other upon such specific social problems as immigration, child-labor, employers' liability, and methods Of industrial remuneration. The History of Trade Unionism (Classic Reprint) by Sidney Webb Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Trade Unionism Though we undertook the study of the Trade Union movement, not to prove any proposition of our own, but to discover what problems it had to present to us, our minds were not SO blank on the subject that we had no preconception of the character of these problems. We thought they would almost certainly be economic, pointing a common economic moral; and that expectation still seems to us so natural, that if it had been fulfilled we should have accepted its fulfilment without comment. But it was not so. Our researches were no sooner fairly in hand than we began to discover that the effects of Trade Unionism upon the conditions of labour, and upon indus trial organization and progress, are so governed by the infinite technical variety of our productive processes, that they vary from industry to industry and even from trade to trade; and the economic moral varies with them. Where we expected to find an economic thread for atreatise, we found a spider's web; and from that moment we recognized that what we had first to write was not a treatise, but a history. And we saw that even a history would be impossible to follow unless we separated the general history of the whole movement from the particular histories of thousands of trade societies, some of which have maintained a continuous existence from the last century, whilst others have cropped up, run their brief course, and disappeared. Thus, when we had finished our labour of investigating the records of practically every important trade society from one end of the kingdom to the other, and accumulated piles of extracts, classified under endless trades and subdivisions of trades, we found that we must exclude from the first volume all but a small selection from those documents which appeared to us most significant with regard to the development of the general movement. Many famous strikes and lock-outs, many interesting trade disputes, many sensational prosecutions, and some furious outbursts of riot and crime, together with many drier matters relating to particular trades, have had either to be altogether omitted from our narrative, or else accorded a strictly subordinate reference in their rela tion to the history of Trade Unionism as a whole. All analysis of the economic effects of Trade Union action we reserve for a subsequent volume on the Problems of Trade Unionism, for which we shall draw more fully from the annals of the separate unions. And in that volume the most exacting seeker for economic morals will be more than satisfied; for there will be almost as many economic morals drawn as societies described. Trade Unionism (Classic Reprint) by Henry H. Slesser Pdf

Excerpt from Trade Unionism Considerable difference of Opinion exists as to the origin Of trade unions. At one time it was confidently stated that trade unions were directly derived from the old guilds of the Middle Ages. This statement was principally based upon the views of Dr. Brentano and particularly upon his work on the history and development of guilds and the origin of trade unions. Beneficiary Features of American Trade Unions (Classic Reprint) by James B. Kennedy Pdf

Excerpt from Beneficiary Features of American Trade Unions The American trade unions have developed beneficiary functions far more slowly than the trade unions of England and Germany. Only since about 1880 has there been any considerable increase in such activities. Prior to that time the national unions with few exceptions paid no benefits}l The local unions, here and there, developed beneficiary sys tems, but these were not continuous nor, in many cases, important. The history Of trade - union beneficiary activities in the United States may be roughly divided into three periods. In the first, extending from the beginning Of the century to about 1830, the local associations laid great stress on their beneficiary functions. The societies of printers organized from 1794 to 1815 in the most important American cities were typical of the period. In all of them, as far as the extant records show, the beneficiary functions were regarded as equally important with the trade-regulating activities. American trade unionism owed its origin as much to the desire to associate for mutual insurance as to the desire to establish trade rules. The Closed Shop in American Trade Unions (Classic Reprint) by Frank T. Stockton Pdf

Excerpt from The Closed Shop in American Trade Unions The primary aim of the present study is to set forth the facts concerning the closed shop. It is proposed, first, to trace the manner in which the closed-shop rule developed among the early trade societies in America, and to disclose the motives which led to its incorporation into trade-union policy. Secondly, the history of the closed-shop movement will be set forth. The relative importance attached to the enforcement of the closed shop at various stages in our industrial development and the efforts which employers have made to check its operation will be shown. Next, the forms of the closed shop as they exist in various unions will be described. This analysis will make clear what the closed shop is and how far exclusion from employment is involved in its working. The manner in which the closed shop is established and the methods by which it is enforced will then engage our attention. When the closed shop has thus been described in detail, it will be possible in succeeding chapters to study its value as a trade-union device and its economic import. The Americanization of Labor by Robert W. Dunn Pdf

Excerpt from The Americanization of Labor: The Employers Offensive Against the Trade Unions, With an Introd, by S. Nearing Business class power in the United States is not the result of accident. Since the organization of the Standard Oil Co. In 1870, of the United States Steel Corporation in 1901, and the passage Of the Federal Reserve Act in 1913 the business interests have added steadily to their wealth and to their control over the political and social machinery of the country. Probably there is no country in the world to-day where the business interests occupy a position of such unchallenged power as that which they now hold in the United States. Economic and historic forces have united to push the United States business interests into the foreground Business lead ers have planned and manipulated. Deliberately they have forged the links in the Chain of their economic power. To-day they have, almost within their grasp, a monopoly of the best exploiting opportunities in the world. A brief description of some of the more important factors in this quick rise to power forms an excellent background from which to consider a de tailed study Of the Offensive recently inaugurated by the Ameri can employers against the organized workers. The Amalgamated Wood Workers' International Union of America by Frederick Shipp Deibler Pdf

Excerpt from The Amalgamated Wood Workers' International Union of America: A Historical Study of Trade Unionism in Its Relation to the Development of an Industry This thesis proceeds upon the idea that an intensive study of the origin and development Of an individual union will reveal to the best advantage the principles of unionism, and the work ings of organized labor. Unionism is regarded as a social phe nomenon which requires for a clear understanding Of its social importance, the same sort of treatment that has been given to other social institutions. The economist, in his study Of'society, should lay bare the institutions of society and show their social significance in much the same way in which the surgeon lays bare the organs of the human body in order to understand their functions. By applying this method of investigation to this sub jcet, there appear two points Of view from which to consider the union. In the first place, the union may be regarded as a social institution, having very definite relations to other institutions Of society, as for example, the relation of the union to the state, or, in a more restricted sense, the relation of one union to an other. Secondly, the structure of the organization may be stud ied, that is, its legislative, financial, and judicial systems, - also its industrial policy and the relation of this policy to the 'indus try itself. These are questions with which an analytical study of a union will concern itself, and which, it is believed, will throw light upon the larger problems of organized labor.
