Urban Transport Environment and Equity by Eduardo Alcantara Vasconcellos Pdf

Traditional transport planning has generated transport systems that propagate an unfair distribution of accessibility and have environmental and safety issues. This book highlights the importance of social and political aspects of transport policy and provides a methodology to support this approach. It emphasizes the importance of co-ordinating urban, transport and traffic planning, and addresses the major challenge of modifying the building and use of roads. The author makes suggestions for innovative and radical new measures towards an equitable and sustainable urban environment.

Urban Transport XXIII by C.A. Brebbia,S. Ricci Pdf

Forming the 23rd addition to a successful series, this book contains papers presented by an extensive selection of international delegates at the 23rd International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment. Due to its continued success and multiplicity of topics, the series is considered to be a leading source of new research in the area of transport engineering. Transportation in urban areas, with its related environmental and social impacts, is of significant concern for government policymakers and for the urban citizens who need efficient transport systems. Extensive reviews of these systems are required to devise and then safeguard their operational use, maintenance, safety and security. The continuing requirement for better and more efficient urban transport systems and the need for a healthier environment has added to the increasing international desire for new technologies and developments in this essential field. The variety of topics covered reflects the complex interaction of urban transport systems with their environment and the need to establish integrated strategies. These topics include: Public transport systems; Urban transport planning and management; Environmental impact; Economic and social impact; Safety and security; Transportation modelling and simulation; Intelligent and advanced transport systems; City logistics; Inter-modal transport systems; Mass transport strategies; Freight transport; Railway systems; Port and city; Mobility and public space; Innovative electric transportation; Eco-mobility transport systems; Integrated network systems; Traditional and alternative fuels and energy; Public policies and governance.

Transport, Mobility, and the Production of Urban Space by Julie Cidell,David Prytherch Pdf

The contemporary urban experience is defined by flow and structured by circulating people, objects, and energy. Geographers have long provided key insights into transportation systems. But today, concerns for social justice and sustainability motivate new, critical approaches to mobilities. Reimagining the city prompts an important question: How best to rethink urban geographies of transport and mobility? This original book explores connections – in theory and practice – between transport geographies and "new mobilities" in the production of urban space. It provides a broad introduction to intersecting perspectives of urban geography, transport geography, and mobilities studies on urban "places of flows." Diverse, international, and leading-edge contributions reinterpret everyday intersections as nodes, urban corridors as links, cities and regions as networks, and the discourses and imaginaries that frame the politics and experiences of mobility. The chapters illuminate nearly all aspects of urban transport, from street regulation and roadway planning, intended and "subversive" practices of car and truck drivers, planning and promotion of mass transit investments, and the restructuring of freight and logistics networks. Together these offer a unique and important contribution for social scientists, planners, and others interested in the politics of the city on the move.

Urban Transport XX by C. A. Brebbia Pdf

Urban Transport XX contains the proceedings of the 20th International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment. Transportation in urban areas, with its related environmental and social impacts, is a topic of significant concern for policymakers in both municipal and central government and for the urban citizens who need effective and efficient transport systems. Urban transport systems require considerable studies to devise and then safeguard their operational use, maintenance and operational safety. Transportation systems produce significant environmental impacts and can enhance or degrade the quality of life in urban centres. Clearly the challenge of providing effective and efficient transport systems in urban settings remains an acute challenge with financial, political and environmental constrains limiting the ability of transport system planners and operators to deliver the high quality outcomes expected by the public. Topics covered include: Transport Strategies; Public Transport Systems; Environmentally Friendly Transport Modes; Pedestrians and Traffic; Environmental Impact; Intelligent Transport Systems; Transport Safety and Security; Infrastructure; Experiences from Emerging Countries; Land use and Transport Integration.

Urban Transport and the Environment for the 21st Century by Lance J. Sucharov Pdf

"Urban transportation in many towns and cities around the world is becoming a major concern, not only because of rising car ownership and the resulting congestion, but also because of increasing pollution and the consequences for community health. Although there have been considerable technical advances in recent years in vehicle design, transportation systems and in the analysis of the environment, the efficient integration of transport systems within the fabric of towns and cities is complex with attendant social and environmental issues." "This book contains the proceedings of the First International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment held in Southampton in June 1995. Over fifty papers were presented from authors around the world covering transport systems such as railways in cities and electric vehicles; planning aspects covering traffic restraint and 'infrastructure'; environmental aspects including vehicle emissions and urban noise; and future vision issues such as future urban travel demand, and new approaches to mobility."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Transport, Land-Use and the Environment by Yoshitsugu Hayashi,John Roy Pdf

Coordination of land use and transport is one of the most important issues in urban planning from the viewpoint of transport infrastructure supply and amenity in urban space. There has been, therefore, much research conducted in the fields of empirical analysis and theoretical and mathematical modelling of the mechanisms of land use-transport interaction. The members of the Transport and Land Use SIG (Special Interest Group) of the WCTRS (World Conference on Transport Research Society) have conducted extensive research in these fields. Leading on from the activities of ISGLUTI (International Study Group on Land Use-Transport Interaction) chaired by Dr. Vernon Webster, its output was published as a book "Land Use-Transport Interaction / Policies and Models". Concurrently with this ongoing research, energy consumption in the transport sector has been increasing rapidly and become a crucial issue from the viewpoint of global environmental conservation. An emerging research need is to examine and structurally identify the mechanisms of the influence of land use-transport interaction on energy consumption and environmental damage, both locally and globally. The SIG held a seminar in December 1993 in Blackheath, Australia which was the first meeting where world class land use-transport experts gathered to discuss the above topic, covering fact finding, scenario analysis and modelling. This book contains selected papers from the seminar. The Australian Government, CSIRO (Australia) and the Asahi Glass Foundation (Japan) supported the seminar. The book was edited with an enormous and patient help by Dr. Omar Osman at Nagoya University.

Transport Systems, Policy and Planning by Rodney Tolley,Brian John Turton Pdf

Provides a unique review of the major spatial aspects of transport systems, a detailed analysis of transport problems in urban and rural areas, an evaluation of social and environmental impacts, and a planning and policy overview. Divided into four parts, each considering a different aspect of transport geography. The first part outlines the basic geography of transport and examines transport and spatial structures, focusing upon the varying contributions made by transport to industrial, agricultural and urban development. Part two moves to consider specific transport systems at both national and international scales, drawing on studies from industrialised and developing nations and discussing the effects upon transport of the political changes in the former USSR and Eastern Europe. The third part examines some of the many problems of transport and urban and rural areas using specific examples to illustrate the contrasting difficulties and evaluate current urban transportation planning methods.

Transport in Human Scale Cities by Mladenović, Miloš N.,Toivonen, Tuuli,Willberg, Elias,Geurs, Karst T. Pdf

This timely book calls for a paradigm shift in urban transport, which remains one of the critically uncertain aspects of the sustainability transformation of our societies. It argues that the potential of human scale thinking needs to be recognised, both in understanding people on the move in the city and within various organisations responsible for cities.
