Travels in the East, Including a Journey in the Holy Land, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by Alphonse De Lamartine Pdf

Excerpt from Travels in the East, Including a Journey in the Holy Land, Vol. 1 The notes which I have here consented to give to the public have none of these merits. I yield them with regret; they are merely in the shape of recollections for myself, and were destined for that purpose alone. There is nothing of science, history, geography, or manners in them - the public was far from my thoughts when I wrote them - and how did I write them? Sometimes at noon, during the mid-day repose, under the shade of a palm-tree, or under the ruins of a monument in the desert more often in the evening beneath a tent, beaten by the wind and rain, by the light of a torch of resin; one day in the cell of a Maro nite convent on Lebanon another day amid the rolling of an Arab boat, or upon the deck of a brig, in the midst of the shouts of sailors, neighing of horses, interruptions and distractions of all sorts by land and sea; sometimes eight days without writing at all; at other times losing the scattered pages of an album, torn by jackals, or steeped in the brine of the sea. Travels in the East, Vol. 2 by Alphonse De Lamartine Pdf

Excerpt from Travels in the East, Vol. 2: Including a Journey in the Holy Land It is from here, according to my idea, that we have the most splendid view Of Lebanon. We are at its feet, but yet sufficiently distant to be beyond reach of its shadow, and for the eye to canvas it in all its height, to plunge into the darkness of its gorges, to descry the foam of its torrents, and to freely glance among the lowest peaks which flank it, each bearing a Maronite convent, rising from out thickets of pines, cedars, or black cypresses. Sannin, the highest and most pyramidal peak of Lebanon, commands all the lower peaks, and forms, with its eternal snow, the majestic termination on which the violet, rose, and gold, are mingled in hue, of the mountainous horison which floats in the firmament, not like a solid body, but as a vapour, a transparent steam, through which we think the other side of the sky is to be distinguished - a ravishing phenomenon of the mountains of Asia, which I have seen in no other region, and which afi'ords me enjoyment every evening, without my being able to explain the cause. On the southern side, Lebanon gradually sinks to the projecting cape of Saide, formerly Sidon, in descendin peaks crowned here and there, where they rise above the others and the mass of the Lebanon chain, with snow, and following, like the battlements of a ruined town, now ascending, now falling, the line of the sea-coast, and dying away in the mist to the west, towards the mountains of Galilee, and the banks of the sea of Genesareth, otherwise the Lake of Tiberias. On the northern side we perceived a bay of the sea, spreading like a peaceful lake upon the plain, half concealed by the green terraces of the beautiful hill of St Deme trins, the most graceful hill in Syria. In this bay, whose junction with the sea is not perceptible, a few vessels are always lying at anchor, and gently heaving on the ripple, which lashes with its foam amongst the mastic-trees, laurel-roses, and nopals, on the shore. Over the river of Beirout, which runs through the plain, all redolent in life and verdure, a bridge, constructed by the Romans, and restored by fakar-el-din, throws its picturesque arches. A Journey to Egypt and the Holy Land, in 1869-1870 (Classic Reprint) by Henry Martyn Harman Pdf

Excerpt from A Journey to Egypt and the Holy Land, in 1869-1870IN offering to the public a volume of travels extend ing over countries often visited and described, a few words of explanation may be necessary. For it may be asked, Why publish such a book Our answer is, To meet the wishes of numerous friends, and also to contribute something to the knowledge of the sacred and classical lands within a compass that may be easily read; perhaps moved too by something of the spirit of Juvenal, Shall I be forever 3. Hearer only P* I had for years cherished an intense desire to visit Europe, and especially Palestine, consecrated by the presence and labors of the Prophets, of Christ, and of his Apostles. Without visiting Europe and the Orient, I felt that my education was incomplete, - that there was a vacuum that must be filled up.Through the kindness of the Hon. J. A. J. Cres well, postmaster-general, I procured letters from the Hon. Secretary of State to the consul-general of Egypt, the Consul of Jerusalem, and our Minister at Constantinople Hon. Edward Joy Morris.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The East by Jesse Ames Spencer Pdf

Excerpt from The East: Sketches of Travel in Egypt and the Holy Land From the personal knowledge which I have of the writer, I should say that every dependence may be placed on the complete accuracy of the representation which he makes of the state of things in those countries. Truthfulness, an earnest seriousness and candor, as they form, I believe, the characteristics of the man, so they stamp every page of the writer, whose book will be found especially interesting to Bible students, from the attention of the pious writer having been uniformly directed to the illustration of the Holy Scriptures. Travels to Jerusalem, Vol. 2 of 2 by Viscount De Chateaubriand Pdf

Excerpt from Travels to Jerusalem, Vol. 2 of 2: And the Holy Land, Through Egypt I Was employed for some hours in noting down with pencil my remarks on the places which I had just visited; a practice which I followed during the whole of my residence at Jerusalem, running about all day, and writing at night. Very early in the morning of the 7th of October, the procurator entered my apartment, and informed me how matters stood between the pacha and the superior. We concerted our measures accordingly. Out-of-Doors in the Holy Land by Henry van Dyke Pdf

Excerpt from Out-of-Doors in the Holy Land: Impressions of Travel in Body and Spirit For a long time, in the hopefulness and confidence of youth, I dreamed of going to Palestine. But that dream was denied, for want of money and leisure. Then, for a long time, in the hardening strain of early manhood, I was afraid to go to Palestine, lest the journey should prove a disenchantment, and some of my religious beliefs be rudely shaken, per haps destroyed. But that fear was removed by a little voyage to the gates of death, where it was made clear to me that no belief is worth keeping unless it can bear the touch of reality. In that year of pain and sorrow, through a full surrender to the Divine Will, the hopefulness and confidence of youth came back to me. Since then it has been possible once more to wake in the morning with the feeling that the day might bring something new and wonderful and welcome, and to travel into the future with a whole and happy heart. The Holy Land (Classic Reprint) by Robert Hichens Pdf

Excerpt from The Holy Land He was a Breton, he told me. A Breton! And why was he there in the burning African summer, so far from his own gray country? Very simply he told me why. Always, he said, from his earliest youth he had longed to go to the Holy Land, to stand on the sacred spot where Christ had died upon the Cross. He told nothing to any one of his desire, which at last became so keen that secretly he left his home, his native village, and made his way to the nearest seaport. There he saw a ship bound for Algiers. He was so ignorant of geog raphy that he supposed Algiers was a city in Palestine. So he went on board the ship, and presently found him self under the palms of Africa. In Algiers he nearly starved, perhaps would have starved, had he not heard by chance of Staoueli, and of the good Trappists who fed the hungry outside the gate of heaven. One day he walked out of the city, and at last, nearly dead with fatigue and hunger, came to the monastery's door, above which the Blessed Virgin was smiling. The monks took him in, fed him, clothed him, gave him work. And thus it came about that I found him sitting in the shadow of the tower on that burning day of summer. Memoir to Accompany the Map of the Holy Land (Classic Reprint) by C. W. M. Van De Velde Pdf

Excerpt from Memoir to Accompany the Map of the Holy Land I_ had neglected to provide myself with Aneroid - barometers. Which I afterwards much regretted; for although there are long lists of altitudes taken by different travellers yet these measurements present such wide discrepancies that we should have felt glad for a comparison with observations of our own, in order to be more able to appreciate their respective value. Too many books are, when travelling anywhere, but especially in Palestine, a burthen. Ritter's Erdkunde, vol. XV XVI (vol. XVII had not appeared at that time) and Robinson's Biblical Researches I thought, however, indispensable and so they were packed in my porte manteaus with two or three other books on Palestine of secondary rank.
