The Cuba Archive by Tria Giovan Pdf

Tria Giovan first traveled to Cuba in 1990. Over the next six years she took twelve month-long trips, traversing the island numerous times, and making over 25,000 images. Immersing herself in Cuba's history, literature and politics, she photographed interiors of homes and businesses, city streets, rural landscapes, signs and billboards, and, most of all, the people, creating a compelling body of work that captures the subtleties and layered complexities of day-to-day Cuba born from complete engagement and informed perspective. Cuba The Elusive Island published by Harry N. Abrams in 1996--a collector's item--first brought together 100 of these images, along with a selection of writings by some of Cuba's most important writers. Twenty years later, Giovan re-edited the images, while working to preserve the original 6 x 9 color negatives. Through this intensive re-examination, a new more complex view of the historical significance of this work has emerged. Images previously disregarded or missed now stand out as a record of elements that no longer exist and one of a Cuba poised on the brink of change. The 120 selected images featured in The Cuba Archive , many of which have never been shown, reveal Cuba at a pivotal point in its storied and fascinating history, and bear witness to an inimitable, resilient and complex country and people.

Sand Sea Sky by Tria Giovan Pdf

The ocean and the beach have always provided humankind with ready metaphors for the infinite. For New York photographer Tria Giovan, the beaches of Long Island inspired a fascinating attempt to comprehend their vastness and that of the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Known for her portraits of Cuban daily life (collected in Cuba: The Elusive Island) and her regular publication in magazines such as Aperture, Elle, Harpers and Vogue, Giovan has traveled all over the globe throughout her 25-year career, but here she has decided to stay close to home. Accumulating roughly 10,000 photographs of the undisturbed Sagaponack beaches on the eastern end of Long Island, Giovan charted the change of seasons and myriad shifts of light and atmosphere as the tides rose and receded each day. With a selection of 63 captivating prints and an accompanying essay by ecologist Carl Safina, Sand Sea Sky offers the photographer's meditations on fragility, the vastness of nature and the inevitability of change. As Giovan also observes: "these photographs of this vulnerable landscape invite a thoughtful concern about the environmental preservation of special places that engage our capacity for wonder."

Cuba Black and White by Anna Mia Davidson Pdf

In 1961, the US ban on Cuban trade and travel, followed by a break in diplomatic relations, created a de facto embargo on information about Cuba. In 1999, at age 25, Anna Mia Davidson went to Cuba for the first time on a personal journey to capture the isolated island nation. Cuba was just beginning to recover from the "Special Period," the economic crisis that occurred after 1989 when Russia pulled its financial support after nearly four decades. On further travels during the following eight years, Davidson portrayed daily life in the cities, villages and countryside. Her black-and-white photographs are a testimony to the resilience of the Cuban people, who stood their ground during this transitional period with ingenuity and spirit. It was also here that Davidson came into contact with traditional forms of sustainable farming, a passion that has endured over the years.

Havana Youth by Ariana Hernandez-Reguant Pdf

In Havana Youth, Greg Kahn explores Cubans born after 1989, who have only known a time after the USSR dissolved and left the Caribbean nation with few resources and a growth-crippling, US-led economic embargo. Those kids, born during what is called "The Special Period", are now in their twenties and developing a sense of individuality in a society that was historically focused on collectivism. This is their cultural counter-revolution, and they are redefining what it means to be Cuban.

Building the New Man by Francesco Cassata Pdf

Based on previously unexplored archival documentation, this book offers the first general overview of the history of Italian eugenics, not limited to the decades of Fascist regime, but instead ranging from the beginning of the 1900s to the first half of the 1970s. The Author discusses several fundamental themes of the comparative history of eugenics: the importance of the Latin eugenic model; the relationship between eugenics and fascism; the influence of Catholicism on the eugenic discourse and the complex links between genetics and eugenics. It examines the Liberal pre-fascist period and the post-WW2 transition from fascist and racial eugenics to medical and human genetics. As far as fascist eugenics is concerned, the book provides a refreshing analysis, considering Italian eugenics as the most important case-study in order to define Latin eugenics as an alternative model to its Anglo-American, German and Scandinavian counterparts. Analyses in detail the nature-nurture debate during the State racist campaign in fascist Italy (1938–1943) as a boundary tool in the contraposition between the different institutional, political and ideological currents of fascist racism.

Hollywood Royale by David Fahey Pdf

One of a handful of artists to emerge from Andy Warhol's celebrity-focused Interview magazine, Matthew Rolston is a well-established icon of Hollywood photography. Alongside such luminaries as Herb Ritts and Greg Gorman, Rolston was a member of an influential group of photographers (among them, Bruce Weber, Annie Leibovitz, and Steven Meisel) who came from the 1980s magazine scene. Rolston helped define the era's take on celebrity imagemaking, gender bending, and much more. Edited by long-time Los Angeles-based gallerist and curator David Fahey, this book - Rolston's fourth monograph - presents a stunning array of portraits that beautifully and succinctly capture the decade and its myriad talents. From Michael Jackson and Madonna, to Prince, George Michael, and Cyndi Lauper, the selection of images reflects a seamless blend of style, skill, and scintillation. This volume features over 100 mesmerizing photographs selected from Rolston's extensive body of work, centering on his unforgettable portraits of the era's most famous personalities. With essays by authors Pat Hackett, Andy Warhol's longtime biographer and diarist; Colin Westerbeck, noted photographic curator and expert on American photographer Irving Penn; and Charles Churchward, longtime creative director of Vogue magazine and author of The Golden Hour, a definitive biography of Herb Ritts, Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles, paints a fascinating picture of an indelible imagemaker and the movie stars, models, and artists he immortalised during this period. Rolston's photographs recall the glamour of Old Hollywood with postmodern irony, helping to point the way towards the cult of fame we live with today. AUTHOR: Matthew Roston is an artist who works in photography and video. In 1977, Rolston was 'discovered' by Andy Warhol, who commissioned portraits for proto - celebrity magazine, Interview, followed by assignments for Rolling Stone from founding editor Jann Wenner, and soon after, by Vanity Fair, under editors Tina Brown and later, Graydon Carter. Rolston'' 1980s images are notable for their glamorous lighting and detail-rich sets. His work has helped define the contemporary aesthetics of American portrait photography. Rolston's photographs have been exhibited worldwide and are in the permanent collections of LACMA and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others. SELLING POINTS: * This volume contains a veritable compendium of Rolston's innovative photographic techniques. The images range from classic vintage-style 8x10 camera portraits to more stylized experiments in cross-processing, multiple exposure, and high-contrast color. * From pop stars to movie stars, TV personalities to socialites, Warhol's protege presents a virtual 'who's who' of 1980s celebrity. 150 colour and b/w photographs

Fashion Work by Jeppe Ugelvig Pdf

An exhilarating scrapbook of the 1990s fashion-art scene in New York and Paris, with Bernadette Corporation, Susan Cianciolo, BLESS and DIS In this unprecedented volume, the New York- and London-based critic and curator Jeppe Ugelvig recounts a little-explored history of art/fashion hybridity through the genre-defying practices of Bernadette Corporation, Susan Cianciolo, BLESS and DIS, exploring their experimental approaches to fashion production between the art and fashion worlds in a time of radical societal change. Through a rich selection of rare and previously unseen photographs and ephemera, the book depicts fashion work in all its exhilarating complexity, tracing it from the atelier of the garment-maker to the post-production editing suite of the fashion photographer. Ugelvig's comprehensive account connects a mythological 1990s generation of collaborative, DIY fashion producers in New York, Paris and Berlin to the digital and increasingly corporate systems of fashion of the 2010s, where aesthetic activities such as styling and creative directing have become ubiquitous. From the dystopian brand-hacking of Bernadette Corporation to the museum pop-up stores and early sneaker collaborations of BLESS, the book shows how artists not only manage to repeatedly subvert fashion's frenzied systems, but also to prototype new forms of aesthetic entrepreneurship. Jeppe Ugelvig(born 1993) is a critic and curator based in New York and London. His writing appears regularly in Frieze, i-D, ArtReview, AnOther, Flash Art International, PIN-UP, Spikeand LEAP, among many others. He has staged exhibitions and projects in London, Berlin, Copenhagen, New York, Turin and Ramallah.
