Tristram of Lyonesse and Other Poems (Classic Reprint) by Algernon Charles Swinburne Pdf

Excerpt from Tristram of Lyonesse and Other Poems Spring speaks again, and all our woods are stirred, And all our wide glad wastes aflower around, That twice have heard keen April's clarion sound Since here we first together saw and heard Spring's light reverberate and reiterate word Shine forth and speak in season. Life stands crowned Here with the best one thing it ever found, As of my soul's best birthdays dawns the third. There is a friend that as the wise man saith Cleaves closer than a brother: nor to me Hath time not shown, through days like waves at strife, This truth more sure than all things else but death, This pearl most perfect found in all the sea That washes toward your feet these waifs of life. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1892 edition. Excerpt: ... these their own: Gods not loved in vain nor served amiss, nor all yet overthrown: Love of country, Freedom, Wisdom, Light, and none save these alone. King by king came up against them, sire and son, and turned to flee: Host on host roared westward, mightier each than each, if more might be: Field to field made answer, clamorous like as wave to wave at sea. Strife to strife responded, loud as rocks to clangorous rocks respond Where the deep rings wreck to seamen held in tempest's thrall and bond, Till when war's bright work was perfect peace as radiant rose beyond: Peace made bright with fruit of battle, stronger made for storm gone down, With the flower of song held heavenward for the violet of her crown Woven about the fragrant forehead of the fostress maiden's town. Gods arose alive on earth from under stroke of human hands: As the hands that wrought them, these are dead, and miied with time's dead sands: But the godhead of supernal song, though these now stand not, stands. Pallas is not, Phoebus breathes no more in breathing brass or gold: Clytxmnestra towers, Cassandra wails, for ever: Time is bold, But nor heart nor hand hath he to unwrite the scriptures writ of old. Dead the great chryselephantine God, as dew last evening shed: Dust of earth or foam of ocean is the symbol of his head: Earth and ocean shall be shadows when Prometheus shall be dead. Fame around her warriors living rang through Greece and lightened, Str. 2. Moving equal with their stature, stately with their strength: Thebes and Lacedaemon at their breathing presence brightened, Sense or sound of them filled all the live land's breadth and length. All the lesser tribes put on the pure Athenian fashion, One Hellenic heart was from the mountains to the sea: Sparta's...

Tristram the Jester (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Hardt Pdf

Excerpt from Tristram the Jester Through "Tantris der Narr" Ernst Hardt has won for himself a place in the front rank of contemporaneous German dramatists and poets. The play has been produced with great success on many of the National German stages, and has also been awarded the Kaiser Preis and, what is a still greater acknowledgment of its merit, the Volks-Schiller Preis. This latter is a prize bestowed once every three years on the best play produced during that period, by a committee which acts subject to the Emperor's approval. Although as a drama it is not well adapted to the American stage, yet the great beauty and the compelling power with which Herr Hardt has handled the familiar theme of the Tristram and Iseult legend, but along a new line, can hardly fail of recognition. For this reason I have attempted to render this brilliant drama into English. For my short-comings I can only plead the almost insurmountable difficulty connected with any verse translation, and my inexperience. I, therefore, beg that this, my first attempt, be received leniently by those into whose hands the book may fall. The Return of King Arthur by Beverly Taylor,Elisabeth Brewer Pdf

The revival of interest in Arthurian legend in the 19th century was a remarkable phenomenon, apparently at odds with the spirit of the age. Tennyson was widely criticised for his choice of a medieval topic; yet The Idylls of the Kingwere accepted as the national epic, and a flood of lesser works was inspired by them, on both sides of the Atlantic. Elisabeth Brewer and Beverly Taylor survey the course of Arthurian literature from 1800 to the present day, and give an account of all the major English and American contributions. Some of the works are well-known, but there are also a host of names which will be new to most readers, and some surprises, such as J. Comyns Carr's King Arthur, rightly ignored as a text, but a piece oftheatrical history, for Sir Henry Irving played King Arthur, Ellen Terry was Guinevere, Arthur Sullivan wrote the music, and Burne-Jones designed the sets. The Arthurian works of the Pre-Raphaelites are discussed at length, as are the poemsof Edward Arlington Robinson, John Masefield and Charles Williams. Other writers have used the legends as part of a wider cultural consciousness: The Waste Land, David Jones's In Parenthesis and The Anathemata, and the echoes ofTristan and Iseult in Finnigan's Wake are discussed in this context. Novels on Arthurian themes are given their due place, from the satirical scenes of Thomas Love Peacock's The Misfortunes of Elphin and Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court to T.H. White's serio-comic The Once and Future King and the many recent novelists who have turned away from the chivalric Arthur to depict him as a Dark Age ruler. The Return of King Arthurincludes a bibliography of British and American creative writing relating to the Arthurian legends from 1800 to the present day.

The Castle of Indolence and Other Poems (Classic Reprint) by James Thomson Pdf

Excerpt from The Castle of Indolence and Other Poems This volume is intended to be a companion one to The Seasons, published in the same series. The two volumes together form a complete collection of Thomson's poetical works. It has been compiled chiefly from the 1738 edition, the latest edition of the poems of Thomson published before his death, which occurred in 1748. In some cases, where any poems were printed for the first time after their author's death, the text of the first issue is the one followed. The miscellaneous poems have been grouped as much as possible, and there have been added Thomson's prologues and epilogues to various of his plays, as well as the songs occurring in Alfred. The glossary at the end of The Castle of Indolence is one which Thomson himself added, and has not been extended. With reference to the notes, the same plan has been followed as in the companion volume. They will be found together at the end of the book, those by Thomson himself being distinguished by the initial 'T'; the other notes are the work of the present editor. An index of first lines has been also added. A biographical note, and a critical dissertation on Thomson and his works, by Mr Edmund Gosse, will be found in the volume of the Seasons. Cromwell, and Other Poems (Classic Reprint) by John Drinkwater Pdf

Excerpt from Cromwell, and Other Poems In a river-reach and a gallows-hill, In a bridal bed, and a secret wrong, In a crown of thorns in a daffodil. I imagined measureless time in a day, And starry space in a wagon-road, And the treasure of all good harvests lay In the single seed that the sower sowed. My garden-wind had driven and havened again All ships that ever had gone to sea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
