3D Trajectory Extraction from 2D Videos for Human Activity Analysis by Zeyd Boukhers Pdf

The present dissertation addresses the problem of extracting 3D trajectories of objects from 2D videos. The reason of this is the theory that these trajectories symbolise high-level interpretations of human activities. A 3D trajectory of an object means its sequential positions in the real world over time. To this end, a generic framework for detecting objects and extracting their trajectories is proposed. In simpler terms, it means obtaining the 3D coordinate of the objects detected on the image plane and then tracking them in the real world to extract their 3D trajectories. Lastly, this dissertation presents applications of trajectory analysis to understand human activities in crowded environments. In this context, each phase in the framework represents independent approaches dedicated to solving challenging tasks in computer vision and multimedia.

Challenging Addiction in Canadian Literature and Classrooms by Cara Fabre Pdf

In the richly interdisciplinary study, Challenging Addiction in Canadian Literature and Classrooms, Cara Fabre argues that popular culture in its many forms contributes to common assumptions about the causes, and personal and social implications, of addiction. Recent fictional depictions of addiction significantly refute the idea that addiction is caused by poor individual choices or solely by disease through the connections the authors draw between substance use and poverty, colonialism, and gender-based violence. With particular interest in the pervasive myth of the “Drunken Indian", Fabre asserts that these novels reimagine addiction as social suffering rather than individual pathology or moral failure. Fabre builds on the growing body of humanities research that brings literature into active engagement with other fields of study including biomedical and cognitive behavioural models of addiction, medical and health policies of harm reduction, and the practices of Alcoholics Anonymous. The book further engages with critical pedagogical strategies to teach critical awareness of stereotypes of addiction and to encourage the potential of literary analysis as a form of social activism.

Batman and Psychology by Travis Langley Pdf

A journey behind the mask and into the mind of Gotham City’s Caped Crusader, timed for the summer 2012 release of The Dark Knight Rises Batman is one of the most compelling and enduring characters to come from the Golden Age of Comics, and interest in his story has only increased through countless incarnations since his first appearance in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. Why does this superhero without superpowers fascinate us? What does that fascination say about us? Batman and Psychology explores these and other intriguing questions about the masked vigilante, including: Does Batman have PTSD? Why does he fight crime? Why as a vigilante? Why the mask, the bat, and the underage partner? Why are his most intimate relationships with “bad girls” he ought to lock up? And why won't he kill that homicidal, green-haired clown? Gives you fresh insights into the complex inner world of Batman and Bruce Wayne and the life and characters of Gotham City Explains psychological theory and concepts through the lens of one of the world’s most popular comic book characters Written by a psychology professor and “Superherologist” (scholar of superheroes)

A Journey Through Documentary Film by Luke Dormehl Pdf

Documentary is one of the most fascinating areas of filmmaking. Documentaries have broken down societal taboos, changed legislation, strengthened and rocked entire governments, freed wrongly-convicted prisoners, and taught us more about the world in which we live. A Journey Through Documentary offers an overview of documentary history and looks in-depth at over 60 documentaries from around the world. It takes readers from the early 'actualities' of pioneering non-fiction filmmakers such as Robert J. Flaherty and John Grierson, to the documentaries of Michael Moore, Errol Morris, Werner Herzog, and the directors dominating the field (and box office) today. Each analysis includes an introductory synopsis, as well as detailed notes on the film's production history, filmmaker, unique innovations, construction, and key themes and issues. An essential resource for film students, documentary buffs, filmmakers and anyone interested in non-fiction film.

Multimedia Information Extraction by Mark T. Maybury Pdf

The advent of increasingly large consumer collections of audio (e.g., iTunes), imagery (e.g., Flickr), and video (e.g., YouTube) is driving a need not only for multimedia retrieval but also information extraction from and across media. Furthermore, industrial and government collections fuel requirements for stock media access, media preservation, broadcast news retrieval, identity management, and video surveillance. While significant advances have been made in language processing for information extraction from unstructured multilingual text and extraction of objects from imagery and video, these advances have been explored in largely independent research communities who have addressed extracting information from single media (e.g., text, imagery, audio). And yet users need to search for concepts across individual media, author multimedia artifacts, and perform multimedia analysis in many domains. This collection is intended to serve several purposes, including reporting the current state of the art, stimulating novel research, and encouraging cross-fertilization of distinct research disciplines. The collection and integration of a common base of intellectual material will provide an invaluable service from which to teach a future generation of cross disciplinary media scientists and engineers.

Remote Sensing Based Building Extraction by Mohammad Awrangjeb,Xiangyun Hu,Bisheng Yang,Jiaojiao Tian Pdf

Building extraction from remote sensing data plays an important role in urban planning, disaster management, navigation, updating geographic databases, and several other geospatial applications. Even though significant research has been carried out for more than two decades, the success of automatic building extraction and modeling is still largely impeded by scene complexity, incomplete cue extraction, and sensor dependency of data. Most recently, deep neural networks (DNN) have been widely applied for high classification accuracy in various areas including land-cover and land-use classification. Therefore, intelligent and innovative algorithms are needed for the success of automatic building extraction and modeling. This Special Issue focuses on newly developed methods for classification and feature extraction from remote sensing data for automatic building extraction and 3D

Advanced Computational Intelligence for Object Detection, Feature Extraction and Recognition in Smart Sensor Environments by Marcin Woźniak Pdf

Recent years have seen a vast development in various methodologies for object detection and feature extraction and recognition, both in theory and in practice. When processing images, videos, or other types of multimedia, one needs efficient solutions to perform fast and reliable processing. Computational intelligence is used for medical screening where the detection of disease symptoms is carried out, in prevention monitoring to detect suspicious behavior, in agriculture systems to help with growing plants and animal breeding, in transportation systems for the control of incoming and outgoing transportation, for unmanned vehicles to detect obstacles and avoid collisions, in optics and materials for the detection of surface damage, etc. In many cases, we use developed techniques which help us to recognize some special features. In the context of this innovative research on computational intelligence, the Special Issue “Advanced Computational Intelligence for Object Detection, Feature Extraction and Recognition in Smart Sensor Environments” present an excellent opportunity for the dissemination of recent results and achievements for further innovations and development. It is my pleasure to present this collection of excellent contributions to the research community. - Prof. Marcin Woźniak, Silesian University of Technology, Poland –
