...and turn it again by Simeon J. Maslin Pdf

In his new book, ...and turn it again, author Simeon Maslin introduces his readers to a first-century sage who taught: "Turn it and turn it again, for everything is in it." That ancient sage was referring to Hebrew Scripture, and Maslin continues the time-honored rabbinic process of turning those sacred verses, turning them yet again, and finding in them inspiring, poignant, and often humorous lessons for our day. In praise of ...and turn it again Rabbi Maslin is one of the most gifted practitioners of the rabbinic art of connecting ancient texts and modern concerns. His vignettes shimmer with insight, humor and compassion for the human condition. – Rabbi Harold Kushner, author, When Bad Things Happen to Good People By spinning and respinning tales from our ancient texts and connecting them to the real issues of our lives, Maslin links us to our people, our past, and our God. This book is a treasure by one of the great teachers of our generation. – Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie, President, Union for Reform Judaism In this remarkably insightful collection, Rabbi Maslin brilliantly converts his favorite biblical verses into highly fluent and pleasurable prose to stimulate and challenge his readers. This is the ageless rabbinic art of teaching practiced to perfection, a significant addition to the Jewish exegetical tradition. – Prof. David Ruderman, Director, Center for Advanced Jewish Studies, U. of Penn.

Language, Torah, and Hermeneutics in Abraham Abulafia by Moshe Idel Pdf

Abraham Abulafia, the founder of the ecstatic Kabbalah, exposed a mysticism that includes a deep interest in language as a universe in itself, to be studied as the philosophers study nature, in order to attain higher knowledge than natural science and speculative philosophy. The status of Hebrew as the natural, intellectual, and primordial language is discussed against the background of the medieval speculations regarding this topic. Abulafia proposed an elaborate hermeneutical system, unique in the whole Kabbalistic literature, for both its systematic exposition and the eccentric exegetical devices it describes. Various versions of this sevenfold system occur in several manuscripts that are collected and analyzed here in detail for the first time. Torah was regarded by Abulafia as the most important text, reflecting the constitution of the intellectual world and being identical with the Active intellect and even to God Himself. On the other hand, Torah was interpreted in Abulafia's Kabbalah as an allegory to the psychological processes of the mystic, an approach different from the regular Kabbalistic interpretation of this text as a symbolic corpus reflecting the divine intrasefirotic life.

Turn It and Turn It Again by Jon A. Levisohn,Susan P. Fendrick Pdf

The study of classical Jewish texts is flourishing in day schools and adult education, synagogues and summer camps, universities and yeshivot. But serious inquiry into the practices and purposes of such study is far rarer. In this book, a diverse collection of empirical and conceptual studies illuminates particular aspects of the teaching of Bible and rabbinic literature to, and the learning of, children and adults. In addition to providing specific insights into the pedagogy of Jewish texts, these studies serve as models of what the disciplined study of pedagogy can look like. The book will be of interest to teachers of Jewish texts in all contexts, and will be particularly valuable for the professional development of Jewish educators.

The Grasp of Consciousness (Psychology Revivals) by Jean Piaget Pdf

Originally published in English in 1976, the book draws on and extends our knowledge of the process of learning. The subject of the study is the general stage in a child’s development that comes between his successful performance of an activity without knowing how he did it – that is, what he had to do in order to succeed – and the times when he becomes aware of what went into that action. The book reports the results of experiments conducted at the Centre of Genetic Epistemology. Children, ranging in age between four and adolescence, were asked to perform such tasks as walking on all fours, playing tiddlywinks, building a ramp for a toy car. They were then asked to explain how they had performed the task, and in some cases, to instruct the interviewer. Their answers show a number of surprising inaccuracies in the child’s ability to grasp the nature of what he has done. Taking a broad view of his results, Piaget shows that they reveal several stages in the gradual development of the child’s conceptualization of his actions. In analysing each stage, Piaget argues that the child’s concept of his own action cannot be considered a simple matter of ‘enlightenment’, but must actively be reconstructed from his experience. This view has always been at the core of Piaget’s work, and a new area of the child’s mental world is here given definitive treatment.

The Origin of the Idea of Chance in Children by Jean Piaget,Barbel Inhelder Pdf

Although originally published in France in 1951 this English translation was not published until 1975. The book supplements the authors’ previous publications on the development of thought in the child and is the result of two preoccupations: how thought that is in the process of formation acts to assimilate those aspects of experience that cannot be assimilated deductively – for example, the randomly mixed; and the necessity of discovering how the mental processes work in the totality of spontaneous and experimental searchings that make up what is called the problem of ‘induction’. Induction is a sifting of our experiences to determine what depends on regularity, what on law, and what on chance. The authors examine the formation of the physical aspects of the notion of chance; they study groups of random subjects and of ‘special’ subjects; and they analyse the development of combining operations which contributes to determining the relationship between chance, probability, and the operating mechanisms of the mind.
