TV Snapshots by Lynn Spigel Pdf

In TV Snapshots, Lynn Spigel explores snapshots of people posing in front of their television sets in the 1950s through the early 1970s. Like today’s selfies, TV snapshots were a popular photographic practice through which people visualized their lives in an increasingly mediated culture. Drawing on her collection of over 5,000 TV snapshots, Spigel shows that people did not just watch TV: women used the TV set as a backdrop for fashion and glamour poses; people dressed in drag in front of the screen; and in pinup poses, people even turned the TV setting into a space for erotic display. While the television industry promoted on-screen images of white nuclear families in suburban homes, the snapshots depict a broad range of people across racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds that do not always conform to the reigning middle-class nuclear family ideal. Showing how the television set became a central presence in the home that exceeded its mass entertainment function, Spigel highlights how TV snapshots complicate understandings of the significance of television in everyday life.

Physical Oceanography of the Frontal Zones in Sub-Arctic Seas by A.G. Kostianoy,J.C.J. Nihoul,V.B. Rodionov Pdf

This title presents the systematization and description of accumulated knowledge on oceanic fronts of the Norwegian, Greenland, Barents and Bering Seas. The main fronts of the Norwegian, Greenland and Barents Seas are part of the climatic North Polar Frontal Zone (NPFZ). The work is based on numerous observational data, collected by the authors during special sea experiments directed at the investigation of physical processes and phenomena inside certain parts of the NPFZ and in the northern part of the Bering Sea, on archive data of the USSR Hydrometeocenter and other research institutions, as well as on a wide scientific literature published in Russian and Western editions. The book contains general information on the oceanic fronts of the Subarctic Seas, brief history of their investigation, state of the knowledge, as well as detailed description of the thermohaline structure of all frontal zones in the Norwegian, Greenland, Barents and Bering Seas and of neighboring fronts of Arctic and coastal origin. Special attention is given to the study of the multifrontal character of the NPFZ and of peculiarities of its internal structure at different locations, to the description of diverse oceanic features observed in the NPFZ, as well as to some characteristics of the horizontal and vertical fine structure of hydrophysical fields in the NPFZ. The main features of the northern Bering Sea's summer ecohydrodynamics are investigated with the help of three-dimensional direct and inverse models.

In the Studio by Brian R. Jacobson Pdf

Studios are, at once, material environments and symbolic forms, sites of artistic creation and physical labor, and nodes in networks of resource circulation. They are architectural places that generate virtual spaces—worlds built to build worlds. Yet, despite being icons of corporate identity, studios have faded into the background of critical discourse and into the margins of film and media history. In response, In the Studio demonstrates that when we foreground these worlds, we gain new insights into moving-image culture and the dynamics that quietly mark the worlds on our screens. Spanning the twentieth century and moving globally, this unique collection tells new stories about studio icons—Pinewood, Cinecittà, Churubusco, and CBS—as well as about the experimental workplaces of filmmakers and artists from Aleksandr Medvedkin to Charles and Ray Eames and Hollis Frampton.

On Living with Television by Amy Holdsworth Pdf

In On Living with Television, Amy Holdsworth examines the characteristics of intimacy, familiarity, repetition, and duration that have come to exemplify the medium of television. Drawing on feminist television studies, queer theory, and disability studies as well as autobiographical life-writing practices, Holdsworth shows how television shapes everyday activities, from eating and sleeping to driving and homemaking. Recounting her own life with television, she offers a sense of the joys and pleasures Disney videos brought to her disabled sister, traces how bedtime television becomes part of a daily routine between child and caregiver, explores her own relationship to binge-eating and binge-viewing, and considers the idea of home through the BBC family drama Last Tango in Halifax. By foregrounding the ways in which television structures our relationships, daily routines, and sense of time, Holdsworth demonstrates how television emerges as a potent vehicle for writing about life.

Figuratively Speaking by Narayana M S Pdf

Duck the clickbaits and hit the bull's eye. Sidestep traps to unearth a goldmine. 'Buy one get one free' is an irresistible offer, and the buyers of this book surely hit two birds with a single stone. Well, they certainly do so, figuratively speaking. "Figuratively speaking…" is the author's musings on a host of topics related to the pandemic and lockdown. During the recent lockdown, the author has humorously recorded his thoughts in this compilation of essays which are deliberately loaded with many idioms, phrases and other elements of figurative language. While a casual reader can have loads of fun reading these mostly lighthearted narratives, keys to the world of figurative language comes as an absolutely free takeaway. The book covers a wide range of topics that deal with various social, political, medical, cultural and even the spiritual aspects related to the pandemic and the lockdown. The generally humorous narrative style employed through the book sometimes get surprisingly serious and thought provoking. By design, all the 34 essays in this compilation have been generously stuffed with all the elements of figurative language to the extent possible. Constructively using the free time that unexpectedly fell into our laps due to the lockdown, the author has made an earnest attempt to entertain both the casual reader and the English language lover through this book of somewhat unconventional genre that is crafted to tickle the funny bones of its patrons. For the readers with a deeper interest in figurative expressions, this book also attempts to introduce the world of figurative language, in a novel way, The first two essays of the book have been provided with the necessary footnotes for various idioms and phrases used in them. Hopefully, these footnotes inspire the inclined readers to proactively learn more about figurative language, as they go through the rest of the essays. Figurative speech is the tricky trade of saying a thing and meaning another. While the literal language simply states facts, the figurative language is used to convey a message in a more interesting and colourful manner. Figurative expressions go beyond plainspeak and allude to a reality different from what they apparently seem to be at the first blush. One needs to be weary of these sheep in the clothes of wolves, for figuring out the figurative language by seeing through the camouflage is not everybody's cup of tea. "Figuratively speaking…" can serve as a useful module for language lovers to develop proficiency in figurative language.

Realism in Greek Cinema by Vrasidas Karalis Pdf

The history of Greek cinema post-1945 is best understood through the stories of its most internationally celebrated and influential directors. Focusing on the works of six major filmmakers active from just after WWII to the present day, with added consideration of many others, this book examines the development of cinema as an art form in the social and political contexts of Greece. Insights on gender in film, minority cinemas, stylistic richness and the representation of historical trauma are afforded by close readings of the work and life of such luminaries as Michael Cacoyannis, Nikos Koundouros, Yannis Dalianidis, Theo Angelopoulos, Antouanetta Angelidi, Yorgos Lanthimos, Athena-Rachel Tsangari and Costas Zapas. Throughout, the book examines how directors visually transmute reality to represent unstable societies, disrupted collective memories and national identity.
