Two Weeks Every Summer by Tobin Miller Shearer Pdf

Two Weeks Every Summer, which is based on extensive oral history interviews with former guests, hosts, and administrators in Fresh Air programs, opens a new chapter in the history of race in the United States by showing how the actions of hundreds of thousands of rural and suburban residents who hosted children from the city perpetuated racial inequity rather than overturned it. Since 1877 and to this day, Fresh Air programs from Maine to Montana have brought inner-city children to rural and suburban homes for two-week summer vacations. Tobin Miller Shearer brings to the forefront of his history of the Fresh Air program the voices of the children themselves through letters that they wrote, pictures that they took, and their testimonials. Shearer offers a careful social and cultural history of the Fresh Air programs, giving readers a good sense of the summer experiences for both hosts and the visiting children. By covering the racially transformative years between 1939 and 1979, Shearer shows how the rhetoric of innocence employed by Fresh Air boosters largely served the interests of religiously minded white hosts and did little to offer more than a vacation for African American and Latino urban youth. In what could have been a new arena for the civil rights movement, white adults often overpowered the courageous actions of children of color. By giving white suburbanites and rural residents a safe race relations project that did not require adjustments to their investment portfolios, real estate holdings, or political affiliations, the programs perpetuated an economic order that marginalized African Americans and Latinos by suggesting that solutions to poverty lay in one-on-one acts of charity.

Everybody Lies by Emily Cavanagh Pdf

It sometimes feels impossible to keep anything hidden in a place like Great Rock. But now they have found that poor girl down on the beach, I realize just how many secrets we’ve been keeping all along. Evvy has lived on the island of Great Rock all her life. Every year, after the holidaymakers have departed, storms begin to roll in off the Atlantic and the island returns to the small group of locals who, like her, have decided to make it their home. But when a body is found on the snow-covered beach it sends shockwaves through this tight-knit community and rattles Evvy to her core. The dead woman had worked on the island the previous summer and it seems strange she would have been visiting so out of season. What drew her back and who was she meeting? When Evvy learns that her partner, Ian, was the last person to see her alive, the shadow of the murder falls far too close to home. No stranger to being talked about on the island, where no one’s private life is their own, Evvy must protect her daughter, Daisy, from yet more island gossip. Her family’s happiness has felt fragile at the best of times and now with Ian under suspicion, she senses they are close to freefall once again. As the icy weather closes in, Evvy will discover that no matter how hard you try to hide it, the truth will always find a way out. A tense and atmospheric emotional drama that will keep you guessing. THE TEMPEST IN OUR SPLENDID SEASON by Katy Duncan Pdf

New Orleans is bustling with his music. Carl Lorenzio has brought his father's Dixieland hits to different heights. It's in the streets, in the magazines, in the airwaves, it's everywhere. Yet, there is a void inside him doubtful will ever again be satiated with love, a human quality he has lived without ever since he offered it to Ellie Ypsilanti in the sunlit shores of Santorini. He could have gone back to her, could have walked away from the traps. But the drumbeat had begun. It came steadily closer and louder, pushing him away from Ellie until there was no place left to go except Lois De Becher. Whatever gratifies him, Carl finds it onboard the colorful steamboats with his jazz band. As far as the Mississippi River will take him away from Lois and the old antebellum dwelling they call 'home.' But miracles do happen, and Carl has a reason to lift the resonance of his trumpet into merry altitudes once more. Yet, the sirens that lure through magic song are crawling closer and closer to bear their offerings with even more chaos than four decades ago. A tale of love, beauty, and mischief, a modern-day Odyssey from the 60s' to the 2000s', packed with images of scenery, voyages, flavors, and music. The music kind that twangs and trembles within the Aeolian passageways as sound, and the mystery of its magnetic pull and connection with the mystery of love that once it gets you in its clasp...you are aloft. And so the story begins . . .
